Granville Island Brewing, which opened in Vancouver in 1984 was the first licensed micro-brewery in Canada. The first signature brew by Granville was the Island Lager, a Canadian small brand alternative to big beer brands of the time. The beer was an instant success and naturally led to the company creating more beers, such as the Lord Granville Pale Ale (now known as English Bay Ale).
In 2009, Granville Island Brewing was acquired by the Six Pints COllective, which is a part of Molson Coors Canada. This has helped the company expand further and make its beers more accessible to all Canadians.
