Backcountry Custom Canoes was a company started by Jon Babulic. Before he began to build canoes, he had a successful career in construction management. When the company he had been working for had to let him go, it led to Jon using his woodworking skills to build a canoe using a skin-on frame design.

Jon built each of the canoes himself and would spend two weeks on a canoe. The canoes started from $3,000 and were highly customisable. They were also easily repairs and hulls could be re-varnishes and even re-skinned to extend the lifespan of the canoe.
