We’ve spent weeks comparing some of the best dehumidifiers in Canada. Between our test lab and our team of detail-oriented testers, we’ve compiled a list of recommendations that you’re sure to love. There’s a dehumidifier on this list for everyone.

Best Dehumidifiers for Canadians

Why Did We Choose These Dehumidifiers in Canada?

Each dehumidifier that we recommended to you earned its spot on our list. Through our extensive tests, we identified areas where each dehumidifier really stood out. Here’s why each of these machines made our list.

The Frigidaire FFAD2233W1 Portable Dehumidifier is just one of Frigidaire’s great models. However, this is the best dehumidifier overall in Canada because of how effective it is. Though it’s a smaller unit, it easily removes up to 22 pints of water from your air per day. It’s easy to empty and works quickly, with tons of great additional features.

When it comes to controls, no one beats the Midea Cube Dehumidifier. It’s one of the only machines on our list that is controlled via the app. You can check the status of the dehumidifier, but you can also change the settings right from your smartphone.

On the other hand, the DeLonghi Portable Air Conditioner and Dehumidifier offers a different experience. It offers the best functions on our list because it does triple-duty. This dehumidifier is also an air conditioner and fan, and you can easily switch between these functions.

The LONONE Small Dehumidifier is the best budget option we found. It’s effective for its size and offers a compact option that fits right on your desktop.

The Waykar 2,000 Sq. Ft Dehumidifier works well in larger spaces, but it provides one of the best options for automatic drainage. It comes with a drain hose and it’s easy to set up and switch the machine to empty out of this draining port.

Small spaces can be humid too, but you won’t have to worry about it when you use the Gocheer 400mL Dehumidifier. This is the best option on our list for small spaces, especially in your smaller offices and bedrooms. It works well in rooms that are slightly too humid to be comfortable.

If you need something that works best in larger spaces, you should check out the Waykar 4,500 Sq. Ft Dehumidifier. This machine works in your largest rooms to reduce the humidity to a comfortable level. It’s simple to use and easy to empty when you need to!

Best Overall

Frigidaire FFAD2233W1 Portable Dehumidifier

Frigidaire FFAD2233W1 Portable Low Humidity 22 Pint Capacity Dehumidifier, White

Features:

It's Great For:

The Frigidaire FFAD2233W1 Portable Dehumidifier is a great mid-range dehumidifier that offers tons of great options. While there are options from Frigidaire that can handle more humidity or larger rooms, this is a perfect option for most users who deal with mild-to-moderate humidity in medium-sized rooms. Because of its universal application, it’s the best dehumidifier in Canada on our list overall.

At its most effective, this machine can remove up to 22 pints of water from your air per day, and it works quickly. You can move it from room to room with the easy-to-roll casters. Take advantage of three different fan speeds, each of which works to remove humidity at a different pace. The large two-gallon tank doesn’t fill up too quickly. A Full Tank Alert sounds when it’s time to empty the tank, ensuring that it doesn’t overflow.

However, you can also choose the Continuous Drian mode. Unlike some dehumidifiers that use a special drainage hose, you can use a standard garden hose to ensure that your bucket never fills up. Once you have this system set up, you won’t have to worry about the machine overflowing or stopping unexpectedly.

Other features include custom humidity control, which allows you to set your preferred humidity level. It’s a low-temperature unit, so it works well in temperatures down to about 5 degrees Celsius. In humid climates, this works out well. When the air filter gets dusty, you can wash it out yourself without having to replace it.

Overall, this dehumidifier has a larger capacity than expected, and it works extremely quietly in all three modes. It’s perfect for rooms up to 400 square feet.

The Highlights

This Frigidaire Portable Dehumidifier is super effective in small spaces with low humidity. It features a washable air filter that keeps your air clean, and only requires minimal maintenance to keep working. Though this particular model is the low-humidity option, there are larger models with the same set of features that work with high-humidity spaces. You can use this dehumidifier with the bucket or with a continuous drain system, so you can use it however you prefer. Plus, it works in lower temperatures than some other models. It won’t freeze up in temperatures down to 5 ° C.

  • Washable air filters keep your air clean
  • Available in three different humidity options for different needs
  • Can be used with a bucket or with a continuous drain
  • Works in temperatures down to 5 ° C

“Our testers loved this little dehumidifier! It worked well in small rooms that just needed a little bit of extra help.”

Best Smart Controls

Midea Cube Dehumidifier

Midea Cube 20 Pint Dehumidifier with Smart Wi-Fi, Works with Alexa (White), ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2021, 20 Pint For up to 1,500 Sq.

Features:

It's Great For:

Midea’s Cube Dehumidifier offers a unique look and easy accessibility. It’s an extendable dehumidifier that can be used when it’s extended or more compact, depending on how much space you need. The relatively small footprint allows for a huge capacity, as this dehumidifier can service up to 1,500 square feet. Per day, it can remove up to 20 pints of water from your air, leaving your spaces more comfortable overall.

You can adjust the humidity to your preferred setting between 35% and 85%, so your spaces will always be as comfortable as you want them. Most of the settings can be accessed from the top of the dehumidifier. However, these options are also available via the Midea app, which can control your settings, timers, and more. In the app, you can even check how full the bucket is and get an alert when it’s time to empty it.

But you don’t always have to empty it. A port in the back and the included rain hose make it easy to set this machine up for continuous draining. If you’re often busy or don’t want to bother with emptying the bucket, you can always set this up to take the pressure off.

If you don’t want to set up a continuous drainage system, it’s still a great humidifier with a larger-than-average water reservoir. You won’t have to empty it as often as some other machines.

As soon as you’re ready to put the dehumidifier away, you can use the nesting design to make it compact and simple to store, too. This machine has three different fan speeds, each of which provides great functionality and different noise levels. It’s an idea for medium-to-large rooms.

The Highlights

The Midea Cube Dehumidifier allows you to adjust your preferred humidity level from 35% to 85%, so you can choose just about any level in between depending on how much you want the machine to work. When you aren’t using it, it nests down into a compact shape so you can store it wherever. This dehumidifier comes with an app, which includes ways to control your machine and a visual representation of how full the bucket is, so you know when to empty it. If you don’t want to deal with a bucket, this dehumidifier includes a drain hose so you can make it drain continuously.

  • Adjusts humidity level from 35% to 85%
  • Compact, nesting storage design
  • The app includes controls and bucket fill level
  • Includes drain hose to switch to continuous

From the Test Lab

“This machine is super effective, and it looks so much different than the other dehumidifiers we’ve seen. Our testers thought the app was easy to use and extremely convenient.”

DeLonghi Portable Air Conditioner and Dehumidifier

DeLonghi Portable Air Conditioner 11,000 BTU,cool medium rooms up to 400 sq ft,compact design,powerful cooling,AC Unit for room,dehumidifier,fan,programmable,window venting kit,Eco Friendly Gas,EM360

Features:

It's Great For:

Though DeLonghi’s Portable Air Conditioner and Dehumidifier is an air conditioner first, the dehumidifier works well enough for us to add it to our list. This machine offers three options in one, which is what makes it the best dehumidifier for different functions on our list in Canada. In addition to being a portable air conditioner and dehumidifier, it also doubles as a fan.

Overall, this unit is great for smaller and medium spaces. It can remove up to 1.5 pints of water per hour from your air, meaning that it empties about 36 pints per day if you run it for a full 24 hours. If you do, you don’t have to worry about wasting energy – this unit Is effective no matter which function you’re using, meaning that you get the most out of less power.

It’s also a quiet machine, as some of the higher fan speeds and air conditioning settings might reach up to 53 dB. Still, this is the highest noise level you can expect, even in those higher settings. One of the unique features of this unit is the ability to recycle the water that it draws out of the air. The moisture is recycled back into the system and helps to cool down the coils, meaning that there is very little moisture left for a reservoir. In very humid environments, you might have to empty the reservoir. However, it won’t be required often.

This unit features an easy-to-use control panel with a digital display, so you can change every setting right on the machine. However, you can also use the included remote to change your settings from a distance. For rooms up to 500 square feet, this air conditioner, dehumidifier, and fan can help keep you cool and comfortable during those hot Canadian summers.

The Highlights

The DeLonghi Portable Air Conditioner and Dehumidifier is a 3-in-1 machine that also works as a fan. It features a larger capacity than other dehumidifying options, as it can remove up to 36 pints of moisture from your air per day. It does this by recycling water back into the air conditioning system, so you don’t have to worry about emptying a bucket. The included remote helps adjust every setting on every different function for this machine.

  • Larger capacity than other dehumidifying options
  • Continuous drain helps make use easy
  • Doubles as a portable air conditioner and fan
  • Remote helps adjust every function and setting

From the Test Lab

“This dehumidifier and air conditioner defied all of our expectations. It performed each function well, even when we expected it to lag in certain areas.”

Features:

It's Great For:

The LONONE Small Dehumidifier is a compact unit that is perfect for your desktop, bedside table or use in other small rooms. Though it has a small capacity, it can still service most small rooms without a problem. This dehumidifier works quickly to drain the humidity out of rooms between 50 and 190 square feet.

It features lights that can be changed to 7 different colours, each shining down into the water tank. The lights change with certain statuses. For instance, the blue light in the tank changes to red when the water tank is full, alerting you that it’s time to empty the water. However, you can also change the LEDs to help the dehumidifier match with your décor, or to set the mood in your room. There’s also an option to turn these lights off if you want to use it while sleeping.

It’s extremely quiet as well, so you can use it near where you sleep without any issues. When the bucket is full, the machine automatically shuts off. This prevents it from overflowing while it runs, so you never have to worry about leaving it alone. One of the biggest draws to this small, inexpensive unit is how portable it is. You can move it from your bedroom to your office without any hassle at all.

This miniature dehumidifier works best in temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius, as well as in humidity levels between 60% and 80%. It has a single humidity setting, which works to reduce as much humidity as possible without leaving the air uncomfortably dry.

Best Automatic Drain

Waykar 2000 Sq. Ft Dehumidifier

Waykar 2000 Sq. Ft Dehumidifier for Home and Basements, with Auto or Manual Drainage,0.66 Gallon Water Tank Capacity

Features:

It's Great For:

When it comes to larger spaces, the Waykar 2,000 Sq. Ft Dehumidifier is here to help. This unit can remove up to 24 pints of moisture per day from your air, which produces a lot of water! Thankfully, it also features one of the most seamless automatic drain systems available. While the unit can be set to manually empty into a reservoir, it works best when you use the included drain hose and set the machine to drain without interference.

This machine is one of the first on our list to feature an intelligent humidity control feature. This option allows the unit to adjust to your desired humidity. While most dehumidifiers with humidity adjustment do this, Waykar does it a little differently. Instead of hovering around your desired humidity, the unit constantly senses the humidity in the air around it. When it reaches your desired humidity, it turns off. When it senses that the humidity is rising, it restarts.

However, when the bucket is full, it won’t start at all. This is fine because this dehumidifier also features automatic on and off technology. This means that it shuts off when the bucket is full, but it turns back on when the bucket is emptied again. If you don’t want to bother with that, you can use the included drain hose. Attach it to the drain pipe and stick the other end in a sink or tub to continually drain the excess water without it ever reaching the bucket.

This versatile dehumidifier is great for larger spaces, including your open-plan living rooms, basements, and large attics.

The Highlights

Waykar’s 2,000 Sq. Ft dehumidifier uses intelligent humidity control to keep your space comfortable. It automatically adjusts how hard it works to maintain a pre-set level, which you can set beforehand. When the bucket gets full, the machine automatically turns off. When you return the emptied bucket to the machine, it turns back on automatically. This dehumidifier is great for larger spaces. If you’re not into emptying buckets, it easily converts to an automatic continuous drain system so you won’t have to worry about it.

  • Intelligent humidity control helps maintain a pre-set level
  • Auto On/Off reacts to how full the bucket is
  • Great for larger spaces
  • Easily converts to an automatic, continuous drain for your convenience

From the Test Lab

“This dehumidifier seamlessly transitioned from one type of drainage to the other. It’s great for those who want the option to use both types of drainage.”

It's Great For:

This machine is automatically engineered to reduce humidity to 50%, so anything above that ideal relative humidity will trigger the machine to get to work.

This machine is easy to use and features many of the same features as larger models. It features automatic shut-off, which ensures that the water tank doesn’t overflow when it’s full. It’s chargeable as well, so you don’t have to plug it in – it can run for a few hours on a full charge. This means you can take it with you from room to room without any hassle.

It has two fan modes – a quiet option that runs without disturbing you, or a more powerful option that runs most effectively. You can choose the setting that works best for you based on the context. The timer can be set for up to 60 hours (though we recommend plugging it in if you’re going to run it for this long). It also features status lights that shine into the tank, and can be changed with five different colour options.

This dehumidifier can make your smaller spaces more comfortable again! It’s small enough to fit on your desktop and works perfectly in bedrooms, bathrooms, offices, and other small-to-medium spaces.

The Highlights

This dehumidifier from Gocheer offers a 60-hour timer, which can save time and energy. It automatically shuts off after a certain amount of time has passed, so you don’t have to remember to turn it off. It’s chargeable and portable, so you can move it to the room you need. It features two modes, which include a more powerful option and a quiet one. You can choose the speed that suits you. This dehumidifier is set to reduce the humidity to 50%, a level that is comfortable for most users.

When you empty the bucket, it will resume. The intelligent humidity control helps keep your room exactly how you like it. This dehumidifier works best with a humidity range of between 30% and 80%, so there are a ton of options to help you choose your ideal relative humidity.

Overall, this no-nonsense machine does a great job of dehumidifying much larger spaces than any of the other options on our list. You can rely on intelligent controls to keep your spaces comfortable and fresh.

The Highlights

The Waykar 4500 Sq. Ft Dehumidifier is the only option on our list that features a child-lock setting, so your children can’t change the settings on accident. It also uses a safe automatic shut-off and a 24-hour timer, so your machine never runs longer than it needs to. You can easily adjust these settings and all the others with the touch panel. It’s great for larger rooms, including large bedrooms, living rooms, and even humid basements.

Why Trust Us?

Our team of dedicated testers is always ready to evaluate home products on several different levels. We put each machine through rigorous testing in our lab, while our testers tried the products at home. To get a good idea of how it might work for you, we compared notes and reduced our lengthy list of products down to these seven machines. We’re confident that these are the best dehumidifiers in Canada.

  • Capacity. One of the first things we looked for in a dehumidifier is capacity. You don’t want to change the bucket too often, but you also want it to work hard enough to keep you comfortable.
  • Room Size. The room size usually refers to how large the room can be before the dehumidifier stops working as well. Look for a dehumidifier that can handle a room slightly larger than the one you want it for.
  • Fan Speeds. Different fan speeds may sound different, but they can also be more effective. Having options is great, especially when you aren’t sure how a machine will work in your space.
  • Other Functions. Of course, each of the dehumidifiers we recommend is great at removing humidity from your air. But what else can they do? We looked at the other functions that each dehumidifier offered before making our final decision.

What is a Dehumidifier and How Does it Work?

A dehumidifier is a machine that allows you to reduce the relative humidity in your home. Relative humidity refers to the amount of water that one cubic meter can hold. At 100%, this is roughly 18 grams of water. A room with 100% humidity would be extremely uncomfortable for most of us. The air would be heavy and thick.

The ideal humidity for your air is between 30% and 50%. A dehumidifier can help reduce the humidity in your space, bringing it closer to this ideal level. As we’ll look at below, some dehumidifiers allow you to set your preferred humidity, too.

A dehumidifier uses a fan to pull hot air into the machine. The air passes over cool coils, which help remove the moisture from the air. Condensation collects on the cooling coils and eventually drips down into the reservoir. This reservoir can be emptied manually in most cases. Some machines allow you to attach a drainage hose for automatic draining.

The air is circulated back through the room, with some of its moisture removed. Over time, the machine will cycle all of the air in your space to include less humidity overall. There are certain options you should look for when shopping for a dehumidifier. Some features may make the process faster or more effective, so it’s important to know what you’re looking for.

Choosing a Dehumidifier in Canada: Basics

Here are some of the basics to consider when you are shopping for a dehumidifier.

Capacity

The capacity refers to how much water a dehumidifier can remove from your air per day. These limits can help you understand how efficient the machine is. However, the capacity is often determined by the ambient temperature and relative humidity of the air. For instance, a warmer room with a higher relative humidity produces a greater capacity.

A higher capacity is always better, but make sure to think about it in terms of room size and time.

Room Size

The room size a dehumidifier can service depends on its power and speed. Usually, this guideline can be used to determine if a dehumidifier is right for you. Consider the size of your room and choose a machine that can handle a slightly larger room. Never choose one that works for your room size exactly, as it might have some issues being that efficient. Instead, always choose a machine rated for a larger space. It will be able to handle the room with ease.

Note that room size is not a guideline, but a hard rule. You should never overwork your dehumidifier, especially if it isn’t up to handling your space.

Drainage Type

There are two types of drainage when it comes to dehumidifiers

  • A manual drain empties all moisture and condensation into a bucket or reservoir. Once full, you’ll need to empty the reservoir. This is the water collected from your air, and if not emptied, some units may overflow.
  • Continuous drain systems use a drainage hose and port to keep water moving out of the reservoir. Usually, you have to put the other end of the drainage hose in a sink or tub to give the water somewhere to go. With most continuous drain systems, you won’t have to empty a bucket or interfere with the process in any way.

Noise Level

How loud is your unit? Some dehumidifiers can get loud, just like fans, air conditioners, and other similar machines. Most try to work as quietly as possible and may advertise their noise level range. You want to go with the quietest unit that provides the power you need. If you’re going to be sleeping in the same room, watching TV, or want to hold down a conversation while it runs, the noise level is an important factor.

Temperature Needs

You should never turn a dehumidifier on without looking up what temperature it functions best at. While most have a large range of temperatures, some are a little more delicate. If you run a dehumidifier while the ambient temperature is above or below the recommended, you could ruin your unit.

This is especially true for colder temperatures. Dehumidifiers work by cooling down superheated air (and therefore removing the moisture from it). If the air is already cold, the coils inside may freeze as it works. Some coils are rated for lower temperatures, but make sure you check the ideal temperature range for your dehumidifier before you make a purchase.

Humidity Controls

Some dehumidifiers are set to reduce humidity to about 50%. However, some come with humidity controls. These controls allow you to raise or lower the current humidity based on your preference. For instance, you can set the humidity to 60% if you feel that 50% is too dry.

Most machines with this feature work to keep your humidity around the percentage that you set. Some are better than others. Intelligent humidity control is a special feature that turns the machine on and off to help keep it at exactly your preferred humidity. However, this is more of a special feature, so we will discuss it later.

Choosing a Dehumidifier in Canada: Special Features

There are a lot of special features represented in the dehumidifier market. How do you know which ones are worth searching for? Here’s a quick run-down of which options will make your life easier when it comes to your dehumidifier.

Timers

When you set a timer, you’re telling the dehumidifier to turn off at a certain time. If you have to leave the house, aren’t home during the day, or don’t want it to run at night, a timer can help. If your dehumidifier doesn’t feature automatic shut-off, a timer can be a great way to control how full the reservoir gets before you empty it, which can reduce messes and spills.

Indicator Lights and Sounds

If no sound plays, how will you know when your dehumidifier needs to be emptied? Thankfully, most companies operating today feature some sort of notification option to help you empty your reservoir on time. Make sure to keep your ears peeled to hear when to empty the reservoir if you aren’t using a continuous drain system.

Simple Controls

Nothing is worse than trying to figure out how a new appliance works. When looking for a dehumidifier, look for one with a large, clear control panel. You can also choose an option that comes with a remote, as this might give you more intuitive controls. Make sure to look at the control panel and ensure that you can operate the dehumidifier before purchasing it.

Fan Speeds

Higher fan speeds may work faster, but they can also be loud. To compare which option was best, we looked at each fan’s speed and determined the noise level it caused. Then, we compared this against the efficiency information we had for the unit.

The result? The more fan speeds, the better! Higher fan speeds are louder, but they work quickly.

Filters

Dehumidifiers filter your air while they’re removing the moisture – or most of them do. Try to find a dehumidifier with a washable filter. This way, you can clean the filter yourself. You won’t have to replace them very often, as washable filters are often made of stronger materials than others.

If you have to choose a model that uses a replaceable filter instead, make sure to look up the price of replacement filters. While a cheaper dehumidifier may serve you well in the short-term, replacement filters can get expensive.

Automatic Shut-Off

There may be many reasons you want your dehumidifier to shut off automatically. If the reservoir is full, an automatic shut-off can help you avoid clean-up. It also sometimes shuts off the machine if it overheats or freezes, or if it gets knocked over.

The quality of the auto-off sensor varies by model, but these examples are relevant for most of the best dehumidifiers in Canada.

Intelligent Humidity Control

Some dehumidifiers allow you to set an ideal humidity level. Once set, the machine works to bring the relative humidity of your space to that humidity level. However, most don’t work beyond this. A dehumidifier with intelligent humidity control will feature an always-on sensor. Once your ideal humidity is reached, it stops working. However, it will turn back on as soon as the sensors discover that the humidity is on the rise.

This can save power, but it certainly saves you some discomfort. If possible, choose a machine that features intelligent controls, including a way to adjust and control the humidity.

Frequently Asked Questions

When it’s first installed, it may take a dehumidifier a few days to get your more humid rooms under control. However, if the machine is used regularly, it can usually keep humidity at your desired level after that initial adjustment.

It’s not recommended to use a dehumidifier when it’s colder in your home or your space. Most dehumidifiers in Canada have an optimal temperature where they work best. For the most part, using your dehumidifier in colder temperatures can be damaging.

The optimal humidity for most rooms is somewhere between 30% and 50%. Most units work to keep the humidity at about 50% unless you can adjust the temperature yourself.
