Since 1987, Totem Acoustic has been making some of the highest-quality speakers in the world, making them one of Canada’s best-known speaker manufacturers. They aren’t cheap, but if you are looking for sound quality, it’s hard to go wrong with Totem.

It appears that in many cases they source their drivers, tweeters and woofers from overseas, but assemble the final product in Montreal.

Ecobee, a Toronto-based company with approximately 310 employees, offers a smart thermostat in a similar vein to competitors Nest and Honeywell. Their ownership is unclear – while founded by Canadians, they have had several investment rounds with backing by Amazon and other companies, so it’s possible they are not Canadian owned.

Here we have yet another Canadian manufacturer of high-quality, audiophile-respected speakers. They manufacture home theatre, wireless, outdoor/marine, in-wall/in-ceiling and pretty much every other type of speaker that you can think of. The majority of their product portfolio is made in Mississauga, but some is made overseas.

Sister company of Anthem.

Once the darling of smartphone users everywhere, BlackBerry has largely fallen off the map except for some diehard enthusiasts. Their phones are now manufactured in China by TCL, and run the Android operating system. They still have a reputation for strong security, and they’re the only company making a phone with a physical keyboard.

Despite their decline in the smartphone market, they have carved out a niche in enterprise software, and their QNX platform is heavily used in vehicles.

Axiom Audio was formed in 1980. In 1982, founder Ian Colquhoun joined the National Research Council project in Ottawa, that aimed to standardize the measurement of loudspeaker sound. In 1983, Colquhoun moved the company to Dwight, Ontario, adjacent to Algonquin Park. Over the years they’ve won many awards and have a fascinating range of speakers, including AxiomAir, a Sonos-like product with better audio quality.
