Pelican International Inc. has been manufacturing kayaks since 1968. However, at first, the company did not make kayaks but was a thermoforming plastic parts subcontractor, employing about ten people. The company was bought by Gérard Élie in 1970 who invested in the technology to make plastic boats.
To date, Pelican has sold over 5 million kayaks. It met a significant milestone in 2020. It now has two manufacturing facilities in Canada: one in Laval and the other in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, both in Quebec. It also has manufacturing facilities outside of Canada that is has acquired when it has brought other companies under its umbrella over the years.
