Colin White

Through Verecan Capital Management, we provide money management to individuals and small businesses. Through the Verecan group of companies, we provide a suite of services, including income tax preparation, insurance solutions and mortgage brokerage. We have organized ourselves without any sales targets. There are no employees on commission and no quotas. This allows our staff to focus entirely on the client without distraction. When you add in the fact that we have no proprietary products – everything is brokered – we have put ourselves in the best possible spot to provide professional advice. Our mission is to help as many people as we can.

Tell us about yourself?

I started as an accountant and moved to financial advice over 30 years ago. I got into this line of work through a combination of aptitude and wanting to be self-employed.

If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

In the last two years, we have completely reorganized the business. There was a fair amount of uncertainty. I would tell me to stay the course, it will all work out.

What problem does your business solve?

We Provide transparent financial advice without many of the conflicts that normally exist in the advice-giving industry.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

Listening to the negative experiences many suffer while trying to get good financial advice, I find very inspiring. Building a structure that removes much of the conflict inherent in the system is a good start to improving this.

What is your magic sauce?

We hire the most highly accredited and experienced people we can find and give them an environment that allows them to act in the best interest of the client without having sales targets or proprietary products to sell.

What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?

Hire all of the smartest people I can find that fit with our group and be part of the positive change in the financial world.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

Our approach is atypical in the industry. We spend a lot of time explaining our approach and educating people.

How can people get involved?

We are looking to help Canadians who are frustrated with the level of service they are receiving with their investments, insurance, mortgage or income tax. We cannot solve everything, but we do bring a fresh perspective.
