Nestlé as a brand is familiar to most Canadians. The company was founded in 1867 when Henri Nestlé, a pharmacist, developed the world’s first food designed for infants in Vevey, Switzerland. The product was called Farinee Lacttée Nestlé and it was credited with saving the life of a neighbour’s premature baby who could not tolerate breast milk.
Since then, Nestlé has grown into the largest food and beverage company in the world with over 2,000 brands. The company is present in 186 countries. In Canada, Nestlé opened its first plant in 1918, in Chesterville, Ontario. Today, some of their confections, including KitKat, Coffee Crisp, and Smarties are made in their Toronto facility.
