KBD is a Canadian insurance broker with two office locations: One in Montreal and the other in Ottawa. For over 40 years, we’ve provided car, home, and business insurance.

Our mission is to simplify the insurance process by providing a seamless customer experience, which is why we make insurance quotes available both online and via telephone.

Tell us about yourself?

I’m a third-generation business owner. I started working in the insurance industry 11 years ago, and when I started at KBD, we were only myself and one other employee. Today, we’re 30 employees. I was never a very good student, and insurance seemed a pretty easy field to get into and also a field that would be easy to make money in, considering a lot of the older generation is getting out of the industry.

If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

Focus on the lines of business that bring in revenue before looking at other sources of potential income.

What problem does your business solve?

What we offer is straightforward: we’re insurance brokers offering home, car, and business insurance. We aim to provide a white glove treatment, so if you’re a business looking for its hand to be held, we’re for you. Insurance can be a traditionally complicated business to understand. We aim to simplify that.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

Grow with local people and businesses, and keep things as simple as possible. If you’re looking to get quotes online, we offer that avenue. If you’re looking for one of our brokers to hold your hand through the entire process, we can offer that as well.

What is your magic sauce?

At the end of the day, insurance is a commodity, so it can be difficult to differentiate ourselves from our competitors. So, something we focus on as much as possible is expertise. Especially when it comes to commercial insurance. Businesses want to speak to a broker who understands their business, and who knows which protections are required.

What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?

I’d love to have an office in the USA and to be one of the top 100 biggest insurance brokers in all of Canada. We recently cracked the top 50 in Quebec (out of 600), so that was a nice milestone to hit. With regards to the USA, it’s such a big market with so much opportunity. I just can’t help but think about the potential.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

Hiring committed talent is something that I’m sure all business owners are having challenges with today. Insurance is such a competitive space with regard to recruiting. It’s also a relationship-based business; people/businesses purchase insurance with your brokerage because of the people and the expertise, not just because of the price.
