Distributive offers software that aggregates computing power from idle computers and devices to power arbitrary computational workloads for 10 times less than a commercial cloud.

Tell us about yourself?

A former Air Force Officer, military search and rescue C130H pilot, Ph.D. in computational physics, and Professor and Researcher at RMC Canada. I needed huge amounts of computing power to do my research. It would take my laptop several days to crunch through large physics simulations that explain electromagnetic propulsion systems. I wished for a way to spread those calculations over the many idle computers around me at my university. Cloud was way too expensive, and the do-it-yourself computing cluster setup was totally outside of my skill set. Fast forward five years, and that’s exactly what Distributive has built: a powerful distributed computing platform that is extremely easy to use by non-experts, cost-effective, and secure.

If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

To keep doing exactly what we are doing. We’re right on track!

What problem does your business solve?

We are removing barriers to digital transformation by making large-scale computing abundant, accessible, and affordable.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

Computing power is the backbone of any innovation nowadays. From new airframe simulation in aerospace to nuclear fusion reactor optimization in energy and from gravitational wave research in academia to predictive quality assurance in smart manufacturing, computing is essential everywhere. It is very expensive and very complicated to use at scale. We tear down these barriers for everyone.

What is your magic sauce?

Unlike other platforms (Ray, Kubernetes, BOINC, HTCondor, etc.), DCP is completely built on web standards, allowing it to provide higher hardware and coding language interoperability, enhanced performance, better security, and greater ease-of-use than any other computing platform.

What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?

Sell to industry, give to academia. Distributed computing solves tomorrow’s greatest challenges. We are removing barriers to digital transformation by making large-scale computing abundant, accessible, and affordable.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

There are so many interesting projects to enable and so many interesting verticals to enter. It is essential that we stay focussed and deliver value to one segment at a time.
