Tell us about yourself?

Prior to starting Square One with a few others, I was the Vice President of Insurance and Travel at the British Columbia Automobile Association.

Like most people, I fell into insurance. After graduating from university, there was an interesting job opening at an insurance company. I quickly discovered insurance is a great industry, providing lots of advancement opportunities while providing important protection for customers.

If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

Be cautious about expanding into new markets or products. It’s always more challenging than expected, so set expectations and timelines accordingly.

What problem does your business solve?

Our mission is to make the home insurance process effortless, whether you’re getting a quote or making a claim. With us, you get an experienced team, genuine service, and excellent protection at the lowest possible price.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

Most industries – from electronics to telecommunications to banking – have evolved in the last 20 years. The home insurance industry, on the other hand, hasn’t changed since the 1970s. Without the burden of antiquated processes and systems, Square One developed an entirely new home insurance system designed to meet the needs of customers today.

What is your magic sauce?

We make it easy to get home insurance, online or by phone, in as little as five minutes. And our policies are personalized to your needs. That means you only pay for the protection you want and need. We’re the only home insurance provider in Canada that offers an unbundled home insurance policy.

What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?

We strive to make it even easier for customers to get home insurance quotes, buy and manage their policies, and report and manage their claims online and by phone. There’s always room for improvement.

Many customers have asked us to expand into new personal insurance products. So, that’s also something we plan to do in the coming years.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

On a daily basis, we challenge the phrase, “That’s the way it’s always been done.” Doing so is critically important when customers choose to self-serve online. While we offer agent support both online and by phone, we make the self-serve experience as easy as possible. Expect in rare circumstances, we don’t want to force customers to email or call us to proceed. Every day, we’re making the online experience better.
