Tell us about yourself?

I’ve been fortunate to merge two very different backgrounds into one. I first started a renovation contracting company in the early 90’s. Witnessing the smiles on people’s faces after realizing their living space had been transformed was my joy for many years.

From the world of construction and trades, I jumped into a partnership with a web technologies development company. Because why not? While running the business side, I was able to witness what technology could do to transform business. The cool factor (some call it nerdy) was thrilling. Along the way, in both industries, I made a lot of friends.

Picking up on a friend’s idea and passion, we started Lumenox – the marriage of technology and trades.

If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

Hire/consult experts quicker. Look harder and farther to find those people who can add their expertise to the whole.

What problem does your business solve?

People don’t have time to put up and take down lights. It’s dangerous. And leaving lights up year-round looks unsightly.


What is the inspiration behind your business?

A competitor had a product design that we thought we could improve on. Their lights were big and too visible in the daytime. Secondly, we had feedback from users saying the app was clunky. With a background in development, we knew we could do better.

What is your magic sauce?

We focus on a few areas. It’s important to us that customers feel like they enjoyed the entire process: sales, estimating, installation, and follow-up. Friendliness is a key value.

The use of technology in every area is also very important. And not just for the parts that a client would see. Whether it’s measuring a home, or sampling the colour of their soffit and fascia, technology gives us an edge.


What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?

We’re currently building out systems and processes to partner with dealers in other provinces and markets south of the border. We believe that we can make this an attractive opportunity for contractors, large and small. As far as the technological advances, I could tell you, but then I’d have to shoot you. 🙂

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

Our initial product line had problems with cold Canadian winters. Warrantying those lights and working hard to satisfy customers was a big learning experience for us. Thankfully, through it, we’ve found a great partner in an electrical design engineering firm. Additionally, it’s given our customer service team great insight into walking with people and bringing about their ultimate satisfaction.
