Tell us about yourself?
I’m happily married with a young daughter! I started in the banking industry after graduating from university, transitioned to being a property manager, and then became a licensed mortgage broker. I worked part-time in 2017 and transitioned to full-time in 2018. Arise Mortgage was started in 2019, and I’m currently growing the team and recruiting new mortgage brokers. I’m also proud to say that I’ve achieved the top 20 per cent of mortgage brokers in Canada based on the mortgage volume funded.
If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?
I’d tell myself to partner up with a mentor so that I could allocate my time and money wiser in the business. I’d also hire an assistant sooner and leverage other resources more instead of trying to do everything myself. In terms of process, I’d create a simple system and stick to it for lead generation.
What problem does your business solve?
Lending solutions for anyone based on their financial situation, as well as for those who find it difficult to qualify at a traditional bank.
What is the inspiration behind your business?
Home buying is a necessity, but unfortunately it’s not taught in school. I come in to be an advisor to guide home buyers and investors on using a mortgage as a tool to purchase their first home, and eventually grow their net worth. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and past experiences with clients so that they can make a more informed decision. We’re able to offer more options to clients when big banks say no. We have way more lenders and access to that will offer an approval for all types of clients.
What is your magic sauce?
My experience as a homeowner and a real estate investor. I spend lots of time educating myself and talking to other professionals. I’m naturally curious and enjoy solving problems. Being genuine also allows me to easily connect with many different types of people.
What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?
I’d like to continue assisting clients with their mortgages and provide education and mentorship to new and aspiring mortgage brokers.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?
Real estate market volatility, Bank of Canada increased rate announcements, and mortgage qualifying rule changes. I would argue that the mortgage industry is one of the industries that changes the most often and we need to keep up, pivot, and adjust.
