Tell us about yourself?
My family was always in business, and I’ve always had a personal passion for the bath and body care industry. This passion became my purpose after my brother became ill with cancer. As I spent time in different hospitals and cancer clinics, I discovered and heard firsthand stories from doctors, patients, and their family members about how health can be adversely affected by environmental toxins, consuming foods with chemical preservatives and additives, or produce sprayed with pesticides. This detrimental effect also extends to using harsh chemical products in our homes and on our bodies. After doing much research and discovering that most personal care products contain a multitude of synthetic ingredients that can be absorbed by the skin and realizing just how harmful they can be to our health, I began looking for a company that would provide a product that would help, not hurt, people.
After months of searching, we found a small local company that manufactured 100 per cent natural soap and body care products for spas. Their natural products promised to moisturize, protect, and help skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis. The premise of this company was very interesting to us…beautifully scented, natural bath and body care using healthy botanicals and pure essential oils to cleanse and protect the skin. We approached them and asked to test their products for ourselves. We were immediately pleased and impressed. After my children had used them for a month, I noticed their skin seemed less dry, and their eczema, which they suffered from, had greatly improved. Since then, I have never had to use cortisone medication for my children, as these natural products left our skin feeling nourished and healthy. We decided to purchase the company, and after much research and product development with our team… Scentuals Natural & Organic Skin Care was born.
If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?
What I’ve learned this year that I wish I would have done two years ago is to take more time for myself outdoors- either walking or gardening. It is during these times that my mind recharges, and I get some of my best ideas.
I’d also remind myself not to worry too much, surround myself with positivity, don’t take life or those you love for granted; life is short, enjoy the ride; make every day count. This will help you to be happy and in return will be a benefit for the company.
What problem does your business solve?
Scentuals provides natural, safe, and affordable alternatives to conventional skincare and wellness products.
What is the inspiration behind your business?
When my brother was diagnosed with cancer, I became aware by accompanying him to countless doctors’ and specialists’ appointments that there are many harmful ingredients found in our everyday products. Diving into research, I realized the importance of our skin, as it is our body’s largest organ and is affected by not only what we put into it – but what we apply to it as well. Looking at the skin care industry at the time, I realized there weren’t many natural options, and if there were, they usually came with a large price tag. I knew this had to change. So together with our small team, we set out to create natural products at affordable prices to be accessible to all, which led to Scentuals being founded in 2005.
What is your magic sauce?
Although being pioneers in the natural skincare and wellness industry came with many challenges, we are very grateful for our beginnings and what it has taught us along the way. We have many years of experience and devoted customers that have been with us since day one, and we continue to embody our “from our family to yours” mentality throughout all that we do.
What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?
Scentuals is excited to expand our market distribution in Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia within the next five years. We are always looking to create new innovative natural skincare products that help our customers in the long term. Sunscreen, bath bombs, and refill centers in grocery stores are all plans and goals we are working on for the near future.
Our mission is to continue to convert people to natural products versus conventional ones – one lotion, one lip balm, or one bar of soap at a time.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?
We were founded in 2005, at a time when natural skincare and wellness products were not nearly as popular or as easily accessible as they are today. This posed quite a few challenges as sourcing quality natural ingredients required lots of research and trial and error as we created our formulas. Through countless testing, adapting, and feedback, we are confident in our products and proud to share them with our customers.
Problem-solving is a huge part of running a business. Whether supply chain issues, delays in shipments, and production schedules being moved around – we always have reasons to keep us on our toes and new challenges to face when producing our quality, natural products.
