Smartrek was born in 2011 by exposing the deep-seated gaps in the wireless networking ecosystem. As soon as Smartrek raised this issue, the first seeds of a revolutionary LPWAN protocol were born from the hands of our experts! From concept to design, SpiderMesh was created and launched, and since then, we have been providing state-of-the-art M2M/IoT connectivity solutions to solve the most complex problems. With this master connectivity product, our customers are pushing the boundaries of their industries every day and exploring new possibilities.
Our mission is to offer a simple and efficient solution to connect the objects and machines that surround us regardless of their environment.
Tell us about yourself?
I am an entrepreneur at heart, but most of all, I am the father of four beautiful children, my greatest pride. I grew up in the region in a family of farmers who had innovation at heart. The values instilled in me in this environment (perseverance, effort, surpassing oneself, creativity, and patience) have paved the way for the entrepreneur I am today. My atypical path led me to start several agricultural and maple syrup businesses in Canada and the United States, as well as to start Smartrek Technologies with my partners. They are technology enthusiasts who I met during my studies in mechanical engineering.
Outside of my professional life, I am very interested in economics and politics and enjoy riding my motorcycle.
If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?
I would tell myself to delegate more responsibility to other members of the team. As co-founder & co-owner of a company, sometimes we get buried under too many responsibilities and feel we have to keep track of everything. Delegating these responsibilities allows the team to accomplish more and gives the other team members more pride in their work and a greater feeling of being part of the team.
What problem does your business solve?
Today, we provide state-of-the-art wireless networking solutions to continuously adapt to an ever-changing world, enabling simplified connectivity between objects. We bridge the technology gap and solve challenges of all sizes and locations.
While standard protocols retransmit data nondeterministically in the event of packet collisions, our innovation SpiderMesh avoids these collisions. The result is unmatched performance in energy consumption, network size, and reliability in maintaining M2M communication.
What is the inspiration behind your business?
As the world becomes increasingly intertwined with technology, the growing need for rapidly accessible data becomes inevitable. As the IoT ecosystem expands, it is thus making what surrounds us smarter and more responsive, merging the digital and physical worlds.
Traditional mesh networks are focused on self-configuration and self-healing and do not require a direct line of sight. Yet, the lack of scalability and power consumption needed for a large area are important issues that are often overlooked.
With SpiderMesh, data is synchronized at the bit level (rather than the packet level), avoiding the typical problems of packet collision (as in standard mesh technologies). Unlike other wireless mesh networks, SpiderMesh was designed to provide a predictable and deterministic flow of information. To date, it is the only LPWAMN (low-power wide-area mesh network).
What is your magic sauce?
We call our magic sauce Spidermesh.
SpiderMesh is a low power wide area network (LPWAN) protocol. From concept to reality, it is a wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) technology built from the ground up. This first truly cooperative mesh technology, with bit-synchronized communication, counters the well-known effect of packet collision as the network size increases. This is a real differentiation between SpiderMesh and other mesh protocols.
In addition, When it comes to large-scale monitoring of smart city assets, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), or environmental monitoring, SpiderMesh bridges the technology gap to connect thousands of battery-powered devices over an infrastructure-free network. By bringing flexibility and agility to wide area networks (WANs), SpiderMesh opens up new opportunities for the IoT.
SpiderMesh is the best-in-class innovation available on the market and leads the way as the first LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network).
What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?
For the next five years, we are committed to being a key player in the Internet of Things and enabling businesses to make more informed and accurate decisions. The next step is to prove the scalability of our three product lines (radio modules/wireless, municipal monitoring system, and indoor air quality monitoring system) and expand the sales team for each line. We aim to double the revenue each year for the next five years.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?
The biggest challenge we have faced so far is to build a world-class team with highly skilled talents. With the current lack of manpower, filling positions is very difficult and time-consuming.
