Tell us about yourself?

It was in 1998 that my career in recruitment started after I migrated from my home in Saint Lucia to Canada to seek better and more promising opportunities for my family and me. My career in the recruitment industry ranged in size from small boutique operations to large multinational companies, where I led the recruitment delivery operations and was responsible for strategic and transformational growth for the companies and teams that I managed.

Despite my extremely demanding career, I always find time to give back. I served many community-based organizations, including the St. Lucia Toronto Association, the Council of Caribbean Associations Canada, and the OECS Council of Canada. I am the current President of the Canada Black Business and Professional Association, as well as one of the founding members of the Social Economy Through Social Inclusion (SETSI) Coalition. Since 2016, I have served as the President of The Union of St. Lucian Overseas Associations, an umbrella organization for St. Lucian community organizations globally.

My impact on the business community has earned me many awards and recognition from both a corporate and community work perspective. In 2017, I was recognized at the Black Business Awards and inducted into the Black Canadian National Wall of Role Models. In 2020, I was ranked as one of Canada’s Top 100 Professionals.

My hard work and dedication to social responsibility and the upliftment of black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs have earned me a spot as a “Top Staffing Leader” to watch in 2023. My role as President of the Canada Black Business and Professional Association (BBPA) puts me in a unique position to directly influence and create opportunities for growth and development not only for business owners and entrepreneurs in his community but across Canada by extension.

As a nominee for Canada’s Black Entrepreneur of the Year 2022, I remain committed to being the voice of underrepresented black businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs across Canada looking for equal access to resources and opportunities.

If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

The piece of advice I would give myself would be to take the learnings from failed attempts/projects as it will help define the way forward. I learnt some great lessons along the way that played a huge part in my achieving my dreams of a fully diversified business. It would be to understand from the onset that I need to put in the work and be just as ready to take on unprecedented risks in order to achieve success. Furthermore, as I look back, I’d get over the fear of failure – which most times haunted me at night. Take quick actions as it relates to the level of accountability with regard to why we failed and implement necessary measures to ensure that we didn’t fail the same way twice.

What problem does your business solve?

There was a growing need for a platform that promoted and advocated for equal opportunities and access to jobs by minority professionals in Canada. Having been in this position myself, even with my highly applicable background and relevant skillset, the challenges and roadblocks I faced were incomprehensible. I saw this challenge as an opportunity to fill that gap with the launch of my business.

I understood that a lot of work was needed to give the recruitment industry the overhaul that was required and differentiated my product offering by focusing on the service aspect of the industry and tapping into minority professionals who for so long sought representation on a personal, one-on-one basis to help them lock in their dream job.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

When I first moved to Canada, I worked for a few small and large corporations managing their hiring/recruitment process and strategies. From a very young age, I dreamt of owning my own business, but that dream took a lot of effort and time before it materialized. My inspiration came from different areas; (1) To be my own boss and seek opportunities to fill the gaps in the recruitment industry and make my entrepreneurial dreams come true. (2) Helping minorities and small businesses succeed. (3) Advancing Black Owned Businesses and Entrepreneurs.

The problem I am solving is bridging the gap with regard to the hiring process for businesses and candidates. I am also focused on providing avenues for equal access to jobs and opportunities for minority candidates and black-owned businesses.

What is your magic sauce?

We are a global company with a footprint in several countries across the world. Our magic sauce is in white glove service and our personalized attention to our clients and their needs. We differ from the competition because we are a small minority business with a unique proposition, decades of experience, and a deep understanding of the recruitment industry.

We bring a new perspective and offer unique solutions to everyday hiring/recruitment challenges.

The magic sauce is embedded in our DNA, and our team is a critical part of our success today. We provide exemplary customer service and always go above and beyond for our customers.

What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?

My vision for the business is to definitely expand and increase our footprint across Canada and the world. We will also look at new opportunities to increase our product offerings and give our clients the best service possible in this field.

Our employees will continue to be a focal point for us, and we will ensure that measures are continually put in place for their growth and development. More emphasis will be placed on talent development from both an internal and external perspective.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

COVID-19 changed a lot of things for me and my business, and like the rest of the world, we were not spared the direct impact of the virus with regard to company operations.

We did not have to change course or operations per se, but we did experience challenges with regard to job placements for our candidates, as most companies were not looking to hire as a result of the major uncertainties the world was facing at the time.
