Tell us about yourself?

I’ve worked at small and large companies over the last 10-plus years. The big companies were incredibly useful learning and growing experiences that allowed me to be more effective at the smaller companies I’ve worked at. After trying both, I’ve learned that smaller companies are where I belong. It’s much easier to make an impact, to coach, to affect change, and, most importantly, to move quickly.

My association with CurrentWare comes from working alongside their CEO, Neel Lukka, in a shared office environment. I got to know him well, and when the opportunity arose, I jumped at the chance of working with him more closely.

If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

The most important lesson I’ve learned is that life is not a race, and you’re not competing with anyone else. You can always find people making more money than you, who live in a bigger house than you, or who take nicer vacations than you do.

I’ve prioritized what’s important to me and my family’s happiness, and I value those things tremendously. Freedom, flexibility, health, and being able to work on interesting problems really drive my choices.

CurrentWare

What problem does your business solve?

CurrentWare addresses the critical need for all businesses to manage and secure their digital environments. Our suite of user activity monitoring, cybersecurity, and DLP tools helps companies keep track of employee computer usage, control internet access, prevent data breaches, and maintain compliance with industry regulations.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

CurrentWare was first founded in 2003, a time when both home and business internet use was burgeoning. For example, according to one of Statistics Canada’s Household Internet Use Surveys (HIUS), the proportion of households using the Internet regularly almost doubled from only 29 per cent in 1997 to 60 per cent in 2001.

This is further emphasized by Pew Research, which reports that in 2002, 55 million people went online from work, and 44 per cent of those who had internet access at work said their use of the internet helped them do their jobs.

Considering that broadband connections didn’t surpass dial-up connections until 2005, there was a rampant issue of employees using their workplace’s high-speed internet for non-work purposes.

Naturally, unfettered access to the internet posed significant cybersecurity, productivity, and workplace harassment concerns as employees attempted to stealthily visit websites they should not be accessing in the workplace.

This led to the development of our web filtering software BrowseControl, followed by our employee computer usage monitoring software BrowseReporter. With these tools, our customers were able to take back control over employee internet abuse by restricting clearly objectionable websites while allowing their employees to safely browse the rest of the internet.

What is your magic sauce?

  • Flexibility: While our solutions provide the greatest functionality and value as a full suite, each module of the CurrentWare Suite can be purchased a-la-carte so our customers can acquire the exact solution they need.
  • Remote Worker Ready: Our software effectively monitors activity regardless of location, ensuring a secure and productive remote workforce.
  • Fair Pricing: CurrentWare offers fair prices and honest value to keep our products accessible to companies of all sizes.
  • Deployment: Our flexible deployment options give our customers full control over data retention, security, access, and residency.
  • Stellar Support: Far too many companies neglect the success of their customers after they’ve landed the sale. At CurrentWare, we’re reversing this trend with high-quality customer support by phone, email, and live chat—whether you’re just starting your free trial or actively using CurrentWare in your network.

What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?

We are committed to continuous innovation. Our vision is to continue to build upon CurrentWare’s cybersecurity and user activity monitoring capabilities to provide organizations with the peace of mind that their endpoints and data are secure against insider threats.

We will continue integrating cutting-edge technologies at a reasonable price to offer even more granular control and comprehensive data protection for our clients. Our product roadmap is directly influenced by the continuous feedback we solicit from our customers.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

The biggest challenge has been navigating the ever-evolving landscape surrounding data privacy & legislation. We are constantly adapting our solutions to help our customers ensure compliance with data protection regulations while maintaining the effectiveness of our monitoring tools. We prioritize open communication and transparency with our customers to navigate these complexities together.

Another significant challenge has been an ever-increasing demand for CurrentWare as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering. While CurrentWare’s security and productivity tools can be deployed to a cloud service provider, as of right now, it is a self-managed deployment with guidance and support from our technical support team.
