The value of a subscription box can vary, but it’s important to understand how value is calculated. We all want to get our money’s worth, but how can you determine what a subscription box is worth?

The Price of Individual Products

One of the ways to determine if a box has enough value for the amount you pay comes from the products themselves. If you are subscribing to a box that uses retail products, you can check to see how much each product retails for. If the products retail for more than the cost of the box, it’s an excellent value.

However, in some cases, a box will contain items that are not available in retail stores.

External retail sources can give you an idea of how much each item would cost separately, which can help you determine value.

The Perceived Value of the Contents

If the contents of the box aren’t available for sale separately, you can rely on your own perception. How are similar products priced? How much are you willing to pay for a mystery product you can’t choose yourself and how much is too much?

Since subscription boxes nearly always show previous boxes or preview the contents in each box, it’s easier than ever to look at the items you might receive and determine if they are right for you.

The Company's Projected Value

In some cases, subscription boxes will state how much each box is worth. They’ll say that you can get a box worth $175 for just $39.99, for example. Some even break down how much each item in a regular box is worth and slap a discount onto their calculations.

Sometimes this projected value is accurate. Sometimes, it isn’t. You should consider these claims carefully, as boxes will sometimes inflate the value to make it seem like you are getting a better deal.

It's Up to You

Ultimately, the value of a subscription box is up to you. If you aren’t going to use most of the products (or don’t like the idea of getting mystery products), it might not be ideal to choose a subscription box. Regardless of the deal you’re getting, the risk of getting a box you don’t like can be a turn-off. However, many Canadians like the surprise and are eager to try new things. It’s up to you to decide where you fit on this scale.
