What is a cooling pillow?
A cooling pillow is designed to reduce heat buildup around your head and neck while you sleep. Depending on the model, it may use breathable covers, ventilated foam, gel-infused materials, phase-change materials, or moisture-wicking fabrics. These features do not actively lower your body temperature, but they can help heat and moisture dissipate more efficiently than they would with a traditional pillow.
Do cooling pillows really work for hot sleepers?
Cooling pillows can make a noticeable difference for hot sleepers, especially when they combine more than one temperature-regulating feature. A cool-to-the-touch cover can provide immediate relief, while breathable foam, gel infusions, or ventilation channels help reduce heat buildup as the night continues. Results still depend on room temperature, bedding, and individual sleep temperature, but a well-designed cooling pillow can create a more comfortable sleep surface.
What materials are best for a cooling pillow?
Some of the most effective cooling pillows combine breathable or moisture-wicking covers with materials that allow heat to escape. Ventilated latex and open-cell foam encourage airflow, while gel infusions and phase-change materials are designed to help manage excess warmth. Pillows with shredded or adjustable fills can also promote airflow because there is more open space inside the pillow than in a solid foam block.
How do I choose the right cooling pillow?
Cooling performance matters, but the pillow still needs to support your preferred sleeping position. Side sleepers generally need more loft to fill the space between the head and shoulder, while stomach sleepers usually need a thinner pillow to avoid lifting the neck too far. Back sleepers often fall somewhere in between. Adjustable cooling pillows can be especially useful because you can add or remove fill to fine-tune the loft without giving up cooling features.
Will a cooling pillow stay cool all night?
That depends on how the pillow manages heat. A cool-to-the-touch cover may feel most noticeable when you first lie down, while breathable foam, ventilation channels, moisture-wicking fabrics, and phase-change materials are intended to help manage warmth over a longer period. No pillow will remain cold indefinitely, but a well-designed cooling pillow should reduce heat buildup and feel more comfortable throughout the night than a less breathable option.
I’ve tried a few “cooling” pillows that didn’t actually stay cool, but Casper Foam Pillow here makes all the difference.
The Casper pillow here is a great choice, I can confirm that I haven’t been overheating while using it.
Love my Silk & Snow pillow, there are other great options but this is so cool
If you want a really good pillow, I recommend this one https://www.sleepcountry.ca/sheex-performance-elevee-side-sleeper-pillow/product/22ELSSPL that my husband and I both have and love. It’s not cheap like some of the other suggestions here but in my opinion, you have to spend more if you want a pillow that really works.
I have this https://www.ghostbed.ca/products/ghostpillow-memory-foam memory foam pillow from Ghostbed. It works really well. It’s really comfy as well.
I ordered it and it was fine, but I’d prefer a Silk & Snow over a GhostBed as they have a better return policy and they’re a Canadian company.
I really liked the informative video for the best cooling pillows in Canada. Not a lot of articles have videos where they review pillows, especially in Canada so it made it a lot easier for me to decide on the best pillow for myself! Thanks Made in CA team!
You don’t have to spend loads to get a good cooling pillow. Try this one from Casper with cooling.
I got cooling pillows from Casper. I think they are the same ones and they are good. Especially for the money.
I got some good cooling pillows from Douglas. Can’t remember what they were called though. But I’m sure you’ll find them easily on their website.
You can always find bargains on Amazon. Or try IKEA.
Hi everyone! I am a really hot sleeper and tired of waking up with my pillow damp from me sweating through the night. I have been told that a cooling pillow might help. I didn’t even know that such things existed! But I need some recommendations. Your help is much appreciated!
I get really hot during the night, too. But I bought an adjustable cooling pillow from Hush a few weeks ago and I must say I have slept much cooler. It’s quite expensive. I never thought I would spend this much on a pillow but it has been worth it. Anyway, here’s the link if you want to look it up.
I’ve got them, too. Agree they’re great.
Yep, same here.
Pillows from Benji are great as they have a set!
Slumber Cloud cooling pillows work. Google it or look it up on Amazon. That’s where I got mine from.
I have and they are good. Got mine from Amazon, too.
I’ve heard they are good. Not tried them though.
Have you heard about the TEMPUR-Cloud Breeze Dual Cooling Pillow? I tried a couple (and sent them back) before I found this one. It has been the only one that has really worked for me. I can’t recommend it enough. Not sure where to get it in Canada other than Amazon.
I bought a pair of these pillows about six months ago. I don’t think I’ve ever slept as well. My wife says it’s stopped me from snoring as well.
Definitely worth the investment, then. Maybe I should get one for my husband!
You often hear people say that memory pillows are really hot and the last option if you are a hot sleeper. I myself avoided them for a long time for that reason. But if you like memory foam pillows you can still get one as long as it uses some kind of cooling technology to make it cooler to sleep on. I have used this https://www.endy.com/products/memory-foam-pillow for a good while now and have no complaints. It uses bamboo charcoal with memory foam to make sure you can sleep cooler.
Each to their own. These ones have worked for me.
I have to say I’ve yet to try a memory foam pillow that isn’t hot. I much prefer natural down pillows.
Get the Rosenskarm pillow from IKEA. It’s cheap and it works. https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/rosenskaerm-ergonomic-pillow-side-back-sleeper-50444368/
I’ve got a pillow from Ikea, Rumsmalva or something like that. Not sure if it is a cooling pillow but I’ve not had any problems overheating when using it.
IKEA has lots of pillows to choose from. Just don’t go for the cheapest ones, they don’t last and they go all lumpy. I had one when I was a student. Better invest a bit more because you’ll be happier with it for longer.
I simply love the Silk & Snow pillow. This is the review I read before buying it.
You should get the cooling pillow from Douglas. You know why? Because you can try it for 120 nights and if you are not happy, Douglas will give you your money back. Not that you will want to send the pillow back because it is actually really good. At least I think so.
I found the link for you so you can take a look. https://madeinca.ca/best-cooling-pillows-canada/douglas-gel-pillow/
