The all-foam Douglas lineup contains some of the best-selling options on the Canadian mattress market. Their mattresses perform well across categories, including areas like support and temperature control. Thankfully, their hybrid line is no different. With a few new materials and comfortable, supportive hybrid coils, the new Douglas Hybrid line is ready to help you sleep better.

Today, we’re looking at the Douglas Original Hybrid. This is the least-expensive hybrid mattress in our lineup, and its construction is modeled after the original Douglas all-foam mattress. If you struggle to get comfortable on a memory foam mattress, this option might just be the answer to your problems. And with a 365-night sleep trial and 15-year warranty, you’ve got plenty of time to see if it’s the right option for you.

Considerations:

You may have heard about the Douglas Original mattress, especially if you’ve spent any amount of time looking at mattresses online. It’s an award-winning all-foam mattress that is built to keep you comfortable without allowing you to sink too far into the mattress. The Douglas Original Hybrid is its hybrid counterpart, which means that it uses a different type of support system. Both mattresses use foam comfort layers, but the Douglas Original Hybrid uses pocket coils instead of foam at its deepest, most essential layer.

This means that your body is well-supported, and you can sink into the mattress without feeling like you aren’t getting enough support. The coils are zoned, which means that the coils under your hips (where you are likely to need more support) are firmer, and coils under your shoulders are softer to provide pressure relief. Further, this mattress uses a few new materials when compared to the classic design of the Douglas Original.

Overall, this mattress provides great pressure relief and better temperature control than the all-foam version. Every layer works at reducing temperature while you sleep, keeping you comfortable throughout the day, and moving easily on top of the mattress instead of feeling stuck inside it. It’s a medium-firm mattress, but it might be too firm for some sleepers. Likewise, heavier sleepers may feel that they need a softer mattress (or at least one with thicker comfort foam layers).

Mattress Construction

The Douglas Original Hybrid builds on the base of the Douglas Original, but with increased support and some new materials.

  • Douglas CoolSense Cover. The Douglas CoolSense cover is made with Infinitex fibres for additional breathability. This cover can be removed and washed at home, so you don’t have to spot clean it or follow any other complicated care instructions. It keeps airflow going through the mattress to reduce heat, so you stay comfortable.
  • 2″ EcoLift Cooling Gel Foam. The first layer is made of cooling gel-infused foam. It’s made for deep pressure relief that contours to your body. However, it doesn’t allow you to sink too far into the mattress. You’ll be able to move easily while avoiding pressure points throughout your body.
  • 1″ Elastex Foam. A transition layer of Elastex foam mimics the responsive, springy feel of latex without using natural latex. It helps reduce that ‘stuck’ feeling and may prevent you from bottoming out in the mattress. This means you stay lifted out of the pocket coil layer.
  • 8″ Exoforge Pocketed Coils with Edge Support Foam. The pocketed coils in the support layer are zoned, which means firmer coils at your hips keep your spine neutral and aligned. The mattress is stable, supportive, and made to cradle you where you need it most and add additional support in areas that require it.
  • 1″ Base Foam. A final layer of durable base foam ensures that the mattress maintains its support profile for years to come. This layer also helps the mattress keep its shape.

The construction of the Douglas Original Hybrid combines the best parts of the Douglas Original with strong, supportive coils. The result is a mattress with improved support and better sleep overall.

Firmness

6.5 on Firmness Scale

The Douglas Original Hybrid is a 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale. Most sleepers need a mattress that sits between a 6 and 8 out of 10 to feel comfortable, so this medium-firm profile is ideal for most sleepers.

The way it is created helps support most sleepers regardless of sleeping position. It’s well-suited for side sleepers because of the additional alignment, but combination sleepers can also find comfort in nearly every position. There’s a bit of give, but it doesn’t have the same level of memory foam “hug” as you’ll find in the all-foam version of the mattress.

In fact, the zoned coils may make the mattress feel a little firmer at first. Once you get used to the mattress, you’ll be able to relax into the alignment and support they offer.

Motion Isolation

The Douglas Original Hybrid uses coils for support instead of foam, which means that it doesn’t dampen motion as much as its all-foam counterpart. You’ll still get some motion isolation from the foam comfort layers and transition layers, but the core of the mattress moves around more than you might expect when your partner moves.

The pocketed coils make this better than innerspring coils, though, so those who aren’t particularly sensitive to motion can still stay comfortable on this mattress. If you often wake up when your partner tosses and turns, this mattress might be able to help a bit, but you will still feel some of the larger movements from the other side of the bed.

Pressure Relief

Douglas Original Hybrid Pressure Relief Feature

Pressure can build at the places you press into the mattress more firmly. The mattress pushes back on these deeper areas, creating pressure points that can quickly become uncomfortable. These pressure points can lead to aches that follow you through the day, long after you get up off your mattress. Side sleepers are especially prone to pressure points, especially at the hips and shoulders.

When sleeping on the Douglas Original Hybrid, you’ll feel lifted out of the mattress without losing any of the gentle cradling sensation from the comfort layers. This means that you won’t feel pressure points immediately, and most sleepers may not feel them at all. Heavier side sleepers may have some problems with pressure points because the foam layers might not be thick enough to prevent ‘bottoming out’ on the mattress.

So while the Douglas Original Hybrid is supportive and tries to keep your body from experiencing any pressure, some heavier side sleepers may need to choose a thicker mattress. Thankfully, Douglas has the Douglas Summit Hybrid for those sleepers.

Temperature Control

Night sweats are a common problem among Canadian sleepers, and memory foam mattresses can make heating worse throughout the night. If you sleep hot, you may need a mattress that uses several cooling features, including airflow management, cooling foams, phase-changing materials, and more, to reduce heat build-up throughout the night.

The Douglas Original Hybrid has cooling built into every layer. The cover uses CoolSense technology to deal with heat at the top of the mattress, while the first layer uses its gel-infused memory foam. This foam moves heat away from you as you sleep.

The transition layer is a latex-alternative foam that doesn’t hold onto heat like memory foam does. Meanwhile, the pocketed coils at the base of the mattress keep air moving through the core, so you get a mattress that feels cooler than you might expect it to.

Edge Support

Douglas Original Hybrid Edge Support Feature

Edge support is important for those who sit or sleep near the edge of the bed. If you find yourself gravitating towards the edge as you sleep, you’ll need a mattress with excellent edge support. This can come in many forms. Ultimately, edge support will help bolster the edges of the mattress, preventing sinking and compression so you don’t feel like you’re going to slide off.

The Douglas Original Hybrid has excellent edge support because of the way the coil layer is constructed. The coil layer uses a perimeter of edge support foam, which encases the coils. This foam is firmer to support the edges so you won’t feel much sinkage at the edge.

Ease of Movement

Sometimes, it can feel like you are ‘stuck’ in a foam mattress. When you try to turn over, you end up struggling to get out of the indent your body has made, which can lead to you staying in uncomfortable positions longer. Combination sleepers often deal with this issue, which can lead to them becoming uncomfortable when they can’t move between positions easily.

Thankfully, a lot of the materials within the Douglas Original Hybrid are designed to avoid this ‘stuck’ feeling. The top layer contours to your body, but a transition layer of Elastex helps keep you lifted out of the mattress instead of sinking deeper into it. This, paired with the supportive coils through the coil layer of the mattress, helps create a system that keeps your body elevated enough to move around, but cradled enough to avoid unnecessary pressure points.

Shipping

Douglas offers free shipping to most locations in Canada. There may be a fee to ship to more remote locations, and this fee will be assessed at checkout. If you are unsure if your location requires a fee, you can contact Douglas’s support team to ask about your exact address.

Shipping can take between 1 and 8 business days, and delivery is soon after. You don’t have to be home to receive your mattress, as it will be left on your doorstep.

The Douglas Original Hybrid arrives in a box. The mattress is rolled inside, packaged in a vacuum-sealed plastic sleeve. Once removed, the mattress will fill out to its intended size over a period of about 24 to 48 hours. Currently, Douglas does not offer services to remove your older mattress or set up the new one. We suggest having a friend help you move the mattress box into place, as it may be fairly heavy based on the size you choose.

Sleep Trial and Returns

When you buy a mattress online, you usually don’t have a chance to examine it before you buy. You won’t get to test it out or lay down on it in a showroom. While there are some exceptions (such as online mattress companies that have showrooms you can visit), Douglas mattresses must be bought sight unseen.

This is why it’s important to make sure that online mattress companies have great policies, and Douglas definitely does.

All Douglas mattresses, including the Douglas Original Hybrid, come with a full 365 night sleep trial. This year-long test period ensures that you are happy with your mattress and that you have chosen the option that suits you best. After the first 30 nights of this sleep trial, you can return it for a full refund.

If you choose to return it during the sleep trial period, Douglas will pick the mattress up for free. The mattress must be in donatable condition, since it will be donated to a local charity.

Warranty

Every Douglas mattress comes with a 15-year warranty. This is longer than some of the other mattresses we usually cover. It protects against faulty workmanship, materials, or deep indents. Douglas sets the bar for ‘unusually deep indents’ at about 2″ during normal use.

Make sure that you keep all original receipts and don’t tear the mattress tags off. To make sure that you aren’t voiding your warranty, you should make sure to use a compatible foundation and a mattress protector to protect against damage.

Final Thoughts

Douglas’s new hybrid mattresses balance what Douglas already does well with new support profiles and comfort levels. The Douglas Original Hybrid offers a great way to experience a classic Canadian mattress, especially for those who aren’t a fan of all-foam mattresses.
