Considerations:

The Douglas Summit is the top-of-the-line as far as Douglas’s all-foam mattresses go. It features thicker layers, more luxurious materials, and better overall comfort across its lineup. The Douglas Summit Hybrid offers the same type of elevated comfort as the rest of their hybrids, with better pressure relief and increased support throughout the mattress. When compared to the Douglas Summit’s all-foam version, the hybrid offers even better sleep and a larger range of features.

The most obvious change is the support layer. Instead of using Douglas’s supportive base foam layer, the hybrid line uses a zoned coil base that uses up to 1,400 coils, depending on size. The coils are wrapped individually, so they compress on their own, regardless of what the coils next to it are doing. This means you’ll get more targeted support and balancing. It’s supportive exactly where you need it to be.

It also uses a host of new materials in place of the older ones, including a new type of gel cooling foam. Aside from material changes, this is the first Douglas hybrid mattress that is ideal for heavier sleepers, particularly heavier side sleepers. If you usually find that you sink right through most memory foam mattresses, this hybrid model might just be your next best night of sleep.

Mattress Construction

Douglas Summit Hybrid Construction

The Douglas Summit Hybrid is a little different from the other models in the lineup. As the most advanced mattress available from Douglas, it uses a few different materials to create a more luxurious feel.

  • Douglas CoolSense Cover + CryoFusion Cooling Nanofibres. Unlike the other mattresses in Douglas’s hybrid lineup, the Douglas Summit Hybrid comes with a slightly different cover. This removable and washable cover is made with CryoFusion nanofibres. These fibres help further reduce heat at the surface of the mattress, so those who overheat will sleep more comfortably.
  • 2.5″ ecoLift Cooling Gel Foam + Polar Temperature Balancing. The top layer has two separate parts. First, at the top, is a layer of Polar Temperature Balancing fabric. This fabric helps move heat away from you throughout the night. The layer of foam underneath is thicker than in other Doulgas hybrid mattresses, with gel cooling features that further remove heat from the sleeping surface throughout the night. Aside from cooling, this layer does a great job of reducing pressure when you first lie down.
  • 2.5″ Elastex Foam. The transition layer is the thickest it’s ever been. This layer is Elastex, a latex-alternative foam that Douglas uses in all of its mattresses. This foam acts like natural latex. It’s bouncy and responsive, and it balances your weight across the mattress. You’ll feel lifted out of the mattress, and it will respond quickly to any change in position. It also cushions the coil layer and manages your deepest pressure points.
  • 8″ Exoforge Pocketed Coils with Edge Support Foam. The zoned coil layer at the core of the mattress uses up to 1,400 coils to create outstanding support. Since the coils are zoned, the pocket coils through the centre of the mattress are thicker and stronger. They don’t compress as easily, which means they provide stronger alignment for your hips and back to reduce discomfort. Coils throughout the other parts of the mattress are softer to avoid pressure points. Additionally, an encasement of firm edge support foam keeps you from sinking too far at the edges, so those who sit or sleep there can stay comfortable.
  • 1″ Base Foam. Finally, the 1″ base foam layer helps the other layers work properly, maintaining structure and durability throughout the lift of the mattress. This layer helps stabilize the entire mattress, so you are more likely to experience the positive benefits of its materials for longer.

The Douglas Summit Hybrid sets itself apart from the other mattresses in the Douglas hybrid lineup by using a different variety of materials and thicker layers throughout the top of the mattress. As a result, it’s cooler and offers much better pressure relief.

Firmness

6.5 on Firmness Scale

Most sleepers find that they need a firmness of between 6 and 8 out of 10 to sleep comfortably. This depends on personal preference and sleeping position, of course. As a general rule, mattresses that reach those ratings on our firmness scale tend to sleep better than much softer or firmer mattresses. The Douglas Summit Hybrid is about a 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

The materials are firm enough to be supportive, but you’ll still get that slight memory foam sink to deal with pressure points and overall comfort. The zoned coil layer keeps you aligned and supported, and the Elastex transition layer doesn’t allow you to ‘bottom out’, or sink too far into the mattress. As a result, this mattress is comfortable for most sleeping positions. Stomach sleepers may want a softer mattress, but side sleepers and heavier sleepers will be comfortable on this firmness.

Motion Isolation

One of the most common complaints with couples is motion isolation. If one partner is restless, the other may feel all of their tossing and turning on the other side of the mattress. Likewise, if one partner is more sensitive to movement than the other, they will wake up at every small adjustment from the other side of the bed. To combat this, you should look for a mattress that isolates motion so it never has a chance to get to the other side of the bed.

Hybrid mattresses like the Douglas Summit Hybrid use pocket coils for support, which can naturally dampen some motion. That’s because pocket coils are individually wrapped, and usually compress individually as well. On the other hand, they still carry a bit more motion than all-foam options do. Hybrids are better than innersprings for motion isolation, but all-foam mattresses are still a little better than hybrids. That said, the Douglas Summit Hybrid does its best to isolate motion through the thick comfort layers at the top of the mattress, but it might not be suitable for couples who are extremely sensitive to each others’ movements.

Pressure Relief

Douglas Summit Hybrid Pressure Relief Feature

If you have ever woken up with sore spots from sleeping on a firm or dense mattress, you know that pressure relief is an extremely important factor to consider. Pressure points can form anywhere that you press deeply into the mattress, and they tend to linger throughout your days. If you have a problem with aches and pressure points, a mattress with better pressure relief can help reduce discomfort.

The Douglas Summit Hybrid offers some of the best pressure relief in the Douglas lineup. It uses thicker comfort foam layers than any other option (except the all-foam version). Side sleepers (especially heavier side sleepers) will find comfort in these additional pressure relief layers. The coils help keep you aligned and lifted out of the mattress as well, which can help with pressure relief on the surface.

Temperature Control

Waking up sweaty or uncomfortable is a common issue, especially with mattresses that use foam comfort layers. Foam tends to hold onto heat, which means that it’s kept close to your body throughout the night. This can lead to sweating, discomfort, and night sweats that can wake you up or leave you soaked in sweat in the morning. To control heat and temperature throughout the mattress, look for options that have active cooling materials, including gel memory foam, phase-changing materials, cooling fibres, and more breathable layers.

The Douglas Summit Hybrid uses all of these methods to reduce heat throughout the night. It uses additional cooling fibres through the cover, as well as a layer of cooling fabric on top of its gel cooling foam top layer. The transition layer is also made with a latex-alternative foam, which doesn’t hold onto heat like traditional memory foam might. The coils are breathable, with plenty of airflow through each individually wrapped coil. If you sleep hot but don’t want to lose out on comfort and support, the Douglas Summit is the perfect option for you.

Edge Support

Edge support is important to consider if you naturally gravitate towards the edge of the bed. It’s also important for those who like to sit at the edge of the mattress in the morning and wake up before moving on with their day, or those who sit at the bedside to put their shoes or slippers on. If you’ve often felt like you’ll slide right off the bed, you should consider a mattress with increased edge support.

The Douglas Summit Hybrid uses a firm perimeter of edge support foam. This foam encases the coils so they stay comfortable and supportive, but it also bolsters the edges so you won’t feel the same level of compression as other foam mattresses. If you sit or sleep at the edge of the mattress, you’ll get the same level of support as if you were sleeping in the middle because of this firmer foam.

Ease of Movement

It’s common for foam-based mattresses to make you feel like you can’t move around easily. Memory foam contours to your body to reduce pressure, but it can lead to that quicksand ‘stuck’ feeling that doesn’t give you a lot of options for changing positions throughout the night. While most mattresses that use memory foam comfort layers have the same issue, the Douglas Summit Hybrid has a few key differences that make it easier to move around on.

First, the importance of the coil layer can’t be overstated. The coils tend to support you better than foam alone, so you’re more likely to be elevated out of the mattress instead of sinking too deeply into it. The Elastex transition layer stays responsive and buoyant so you can’t sink too far without

Pricing

The Douglas Summit Hybrid is the most luxurious of Douglas’s mattresses. This mattress uses more materials and denser foams than either of the other Hybrid options in their lineup, so it comes at a higher price. While Douglas has always tried to create affordable mattresses of quality, this mattress’s price reflects its dense construction and the additional materials used to create it. Here’s how much you can expect to spend on each version of the Douglas Summit Hybrid.

Shipping

Douglas offers complimentary shipping throughout most of Canada. In certain remote locations, a surcharge may be added, which will be reflected at checkout. Customers can also contact Douglas directly to verify any location-specific fees.

Shipping usually takes between 1 and 8 business days, with delivery completed shortly after dispatch. Since the mattress is left at your doorstep, you don’t need to be home at the time of arrival.

The Douglas Summit Hybrid is shipped in a compact box, with the mattress compressed and sealed in plastic packaging. Once opened, it expands over a period of about 24 to 48 hours. There are currently no options for in-home setup or mattress removal, so having help to carry the box is recommended, especially for larger sizes.

Sleep Trial and Returns

Since Douglas mattresses are purchased online, you won’t have the chance to test the mattress in person before ordering. That can make trial periods and return policies especially important when comparing online mattress brands.

Douglas addresses this by including a 365-night sleep trial with every mattress model, including the Douglas Summit Hybrid. The extended trial gives you plenty of time to see how the mattress feels over weeks and months instead of making a quick decision after a few nights. Once the first 30 nights have passed, customers can return the mattress for a full refund if it isn’t the right match.

If a return is requested during the trial period, Douglas arranges free mattress pickup. The mattress does need to remain in a donatable condition, as returned models are donated to charity whenever possible.

Warranty

Douglas includes a 15-year warranty with the Douglas Summit Hybrid. Compared to many online mattress warranties, this coverage period is fairly lengthy. The policy covers defects related to workmanship and materials, along with visible body impressions deeper than approximately 2 inches under normal conditions of use.

As with most mattress warranties, there are a few requirements to keep the coverage valid. Customers should keep their original purchase documentation, avoid removing the mattress tags, and use the mattress on an appropriate foundation. Using a mattress protector is also recommended to help prevent stains or damage that could affect warranty eligibility.

Final Thoughts

As the most advanced model in Douglas’s mattress lineup, the Douglas Summit Hybrid offers some of the best performance we’ve seen from the company. Cooling, pressure relief, and an innovative cover help this mattress stand out from the rest of the options in the lineup, so those who want the best experience possible can stay comfortable throughout the night.
