Black Diamond Cheese was founded in 1933 by Robert F. Hart in Belleville, Ontario. The name “Black Diamond” came from the traditional cheese-making process, where cheese would be dipped in hot wax that turned black upon contact, symbolising a “diamond among cheese” for its flavor and appearance.

Over the years, Black Diamond has become known for its premium aged cheddars and the product range includes 2-year, 3-year, and 5-year reserve cheddars. These products are made in Belleville, Ontario, using fresh, non-pasteurized cow’s milk. While the company originated in Canada, it is now owned by Lactalis Canada (a French-owned company).
