It’s 1983, and a young farm boy from Hepburn, Saskatchewan, with help from his supportive parents, secured a loan to buy a sit-down restaurant in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. The young man’s name was Hal Schmidt. Hal promptly expanded the original 30-seat restaurant to accommodate 80. A short 3 years later, with Hal’s enthusiasm for the food industry taking shape and his desire for continued growth, he opened another location in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. After a significant amount of market research and lots of pizza testing in September 1986, Hal finally decided on the name Family Pizza. The “2 for 1” pizza concept proved to be the real winner, and in 1987, Family Pizza Inc. was born.
Family Pizza’s original 2 for 1 concept was designed for the budget-conscious consumer, but still caters to all segments of the economic scale. The pickup or delivery concept is specifically designed to produce an inexpensive, quality product delivered hot and fresh. Family Pizza is primarily a take-out and delivery business, choosing to locate in strip malls where it is possible to achieve high visibility and reasonable leases.
In the fall of 2018, Hal decided to retire, and he passed on his passion to new owners who took over the 10 Family Pizza franchised locations from where Hal left off. In a few short years since new ownership, Family Pizza has grown to 15 franchised locations spread out over Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, and British Columbia, with plans in place to rapidly expand across Canada. Fast forward to today, and the Family Pizza’s future looks very bright! They continue to strive to be the best and to reinvest in their “Family Pizza System”. They are committed to maintaining product quality, brand momentum, and expanding their market share as they keep moving forward.
