How much does a good mattress cost?

    Ultimate Mattress Price Ranges

A good mattress can come in a range of prices. Depending on what you need, a good mattress can start at around 600 CAD, but this increases with the quality of the materials, the construction of the mattress, and the features it offers. The brand and mattress company can also factor into the price, as well-known and reputable companies can increase prices to meet product demand.

Some of the best mattresses in Canada are budget models. Average mattresses (ranging from around 800 CAD to 1200 CAD) can improve some of the basic features present in budget mattresses. Luxury mattresses have no upper limit. Our list has options that range up to over 4,000 CAD for a custom or luxury mattress, depending on the brand and materials.

There are good mattresses for every budget. One of our goals is to show you which mattresses are best at whatever price point you can afford.

Which type of mattress is most comfortable?

Choosing a comfortable mattress isn’t always as simple as it appears. While some of the best bed in a box mattresses in Canada can be comfortable for anyone, most will appeal more to one type of sleeper. There are a few different factors that can determine a mattress’s comfort, so make sure to take note of the following factors before you start shopping.

    Sleeping Position

The way you sleep can make a difference in what type of mattress you find comfortable. Those who sleep in different positions need different things from their mattress. Side sleepers, for example, need a mattress that aligns their body and reduces pressure points. Stomach sleepers need a supportive surface with a soft top that doesn’t give enough to produce strain. Back sleepers also benefit from a more supportive, firmer mattress.

Of course, the type of mattress you prefer depends on more than your sleeping position. These are generalizations that will apply to most sleepers. Thankfully, there are enough options on the Canadian mattress market so that every sleeper can find the option that works best for them.

A good rule of thumb is to start with a medium-firm mattress. This type of mattress appeals to most sleepers, so try a medium-firm mattress first. If it doesn’t work for you, you’ll have a better idea of what type of mattress will work better.

    Body Type

Your body type can factor into how comfortable you find a mattress, too. Canadians with slimmer body types may need a softer mattress. They may not be able to compress a harder mattress, which can reduce the benefits you receive from the materials and construction.

On the other hand, heavier Canadians need a mattress that doesn’t allow them to sink too far into the materials. Past a certain point, the mattress becomes firmer to support the upper layers. If you reach these bottom layers, it can quickly become uncomfortable.

What mattress size should I choose?

    Ultimate Mattress Size Infographic

Mattress size can affect how much you’ll pay for a mattress. Here’s how each mattress size breaks down.

    • A Twin bed, the smallest size, is best for a single sleeper or a child. The Twin XL, on the other hand, is longer than a standard Twin. This size is best for adults sleeping alone or those who need a little more legroom.
    • Full-sized beds give single sleepers a lot of room. Two children could be quite comfortable on a full-sized bed, and two adults can fit (though they will be sleeping very close).
    • Queen is the most popular mattress size in Canada. A queen is moderately priced and can sleep two people, making them perfect for master bedrooms and guest beds.
    • King beds are great for couples, especially those who share a bed with their children or pets. This is also a great choice for those who like to have their own space even when sleeping with a partner. California King beds are longer but narrower, so they are ideal for taller sleepers.

Don’t forget to purchase a foundation, sheets, blankets, and pillows for the mattress size you choose. Selecting these items in the right sizes can help elevate your mattress and protect your investment.

Choosing a memory foam mattress in Canada

Memory foam is a common mattress material that uses pliable foam to create comfort. Regardless of what type of memory foam a mattress uses, the idea is the same. This foam becomes softer when it gets warm, so it sinks and forms to your body. The parts of your body that press deeper into the mattress get warmer, so they will sink further. This allows the foam to support areas that don’t sink as deep, so you won’t feel any strain on your body.

This type of support is effective for most Canadians. Memory foam mattresses are often less expensive than other options, especially hybrid options that include coils. You’ll often find multiple different types and thicknesses of memory foam used within the same mattress to produce a balancing effect. These mattresses also use a lot of temperature control materials to reduce heat, making it easier to sink into sleep without overheating.

While memory foam is one of the most common mattress materials, latex is also used to create a comfortable mattress.

    Memory foam vs latex

Latex and memory foam are both materials used within the comfort layers of some of the best mattresses in Canada. Latex has the same comforting, sinking feeling as memory foam. However, it doesn’t sink quite so much. Instead of the ‘quicksand’ or ‘stuck’ feeling that can sometimes accompany memory foam layers, latex keeps you lifted out of the mattress. It’s more responsive, better at mitigating heat, and holds up well over time.

However, it is more expensive and doesn’t have quite the same feel. The best latex mattresses in Canada feature a host of benefits, but there is a definite difference between these materials when it comes to feel. Of course, some mattresses use both latex and memory foam for their comfort layers. These mattresses sometimes provide better options because of the way the materials work together.

Choosing a hybrid mattress in Canada

A hybrid mattress uses pocket coils as a support layer. These mattresses use foam throughout the comfort layers, but the strong coil base allows for better support, comfort, and alignment throughout the mattress. The coils can also produce better airflow, therefore reducing discomfort caused by heat retention.

Coils can cause additional movement to be passed through the mattress, but the trade-offs are numerous. Strong edge support, zoned coils for better ergonomics, and better support are all great benefits that hybrid mattresses offer. Make sure to look for zoned pocket coils, which are firmer through the centre to provide better support at the heaviest part of our bodies.

You also don’t want to neglect the comfort layers when choosing a pocket coil mattress. Choosing thicker comfort layers will keep you lifted out of the mattress, making it more difficult to sink into the coil layer and become uncomfortable. There are a few defining features to consider when looking at the coils within a hybrid mattress as well.

    Coil size and shape

The size (including height) and shape of the pocket coils used within a hybrid mattress are important. Most of the best hybrid mattresses in Canada include 6” steel pocket coils. Whether they are zoned or not, these types of pocket coils are best for support, lifting you out of the mattress and keeping your body aligned.

Some hybrid mattresses in Canada now come with microcoils. These coils are much smaller and conical in shape. While these provide support, they are great at contouring your body to provide more personalized, targeted support. They aren’t going to align your body like standard pocket coils, but they add a different benefit that doesn’t feel quite like anything else.

Choosing an organic mattress in Canada

Organic mattresses can be either foam-based or hybrids. Their materials are organic or natural, which means they are made without the chemicals usually found in memory foam or latex foams. These mattresses tend to be a little more expensive than luxury hybrids, but they can provide a better outcome for those with allergies.

When choosing an organic mattress, remember all of the factors that we’ve discussed so far. Make sure to choose the right size, firmness, and price point that works for you. In our organic mattress section below, we’ve highlighted options for all budgets, including a mattress that you build yourself based on the preferences of each partner.

You’ll be looking at mattresses that don’t use chemical bonding agents, chemical foams, or even chemical fire retardants. Most organic mattresses use wool or another fire-resistant material to create this barrier, which allows them to forgo using chemicals to make your mattress safer. However, the most important thing to look for is the mattress’ organic certifications.

    Organic certifications

To be truly organic, a mattress and its materials should have certain certifications. These third-party assurances note that the mattress is made with the materials it says it is, and that these materials meet the specifications of each certifying authority. The most common you’ll see here are the GOTS and the GOLS.

    • GOTS stands for “Global Organic Textile Standard”, which notes that the mattress and the specific textile materials inside (usually cotton, wool, and other fabrics) meet specifications agreed upon throughout the globe.
    • GOLS stands for “Global Organic Latex Standard”. The latex materials used meet the global requirements for latex to be considered ‘organic’, determined by their source, purity, and manufacturing method.

A mattress with one or both of these specifications makes a great option for those who prefer organic materials.

Other factors to consider when shopping for a Canadian Mattress

When shopping for the best mattress in a box in Canada, there are a few other features to consider. Keep these factors in mind while shopping to help improve sleep and get more value out of your mattress.

    Temperature control

If you often wake up uncomfortably hot or sweaty, you may need a mattress that reduces heat. Temperature control features are common in most of the best mattresses made in Canada. Memory foam is especially notorious for retaining heat, but temperature control features like gel memory foam, open-cell foam construction, better breathability, and layers of Phase-Control Material (PCM) can reduce heat, wick away moisture, and leave you more comfortable throughout the night.

    Motion isolation

A restless partner can keep you up at night, especially when the motion from their tossing and turning transfers along the mattress. The shaking and vibration can keep lighter sleepers awake. Because of this, a lot of mattresses now feature motion isolation features. Thicker materials that absorb motion help keep you still throughout the night, reducing any disturbance from a restless partner.

    Pressure relief

Pressure relief is important for all sleepers, though it is significantly more so for side sleepers. Side sleepers can develop uncomfortable pressure points at their shoulders and hips if a mattress doesn’t relieve enough pressure. You should look for a mattress with thick comfort layers (around 4” to 6” of material above a support or transition layer). Though firmness matters for pressure relief, thicker comfort layers nearly always produce better pressure relief throughout the mattress.

    Consider a sleep trial

If you aren’t sure which mattress is right for you, consider taking advantage of the sleep trials that online mattress stores offer. Sleep trials give you between a month and a year to try the mattress to see if it works for you. If you don’t like it, you can return it almost any time during that sleep trial period. Some companies make you wait 30 days to return it because this is generally how long it takes someone to adjust to a new mattress.

Sleep trials are useful tools for mattress companies that operate primarily online. Since you can’t go to a mattress store to test a mattress before purchasing it, you’ll have an opportunity to get the same test run in the comfort of your home. Best of all, this trial is much longer than the few minutes you’ll spend looking at the mattress in a store.

Different companies have different sleep trial policies to consider. Make sure you read the policies and documentation before you start using your mattress. We always recommend using a mattress protector to keep the mattress clean and sanitary during your sleep trial. This makes it more likely that a company will accept a mattress return during the sleep trial period.

Best Memory Foam Mattresses in Canada

First, we’ll look at memory foam mattresses in Canada. As we discussed above, this type of mattress uses foam instead of coils to provide better body contouring. These mattresses can be comforting for those who need full-body alignment and value a softer sleeping surface.

    Editor's Choice: Douglas Mattress 🍁

The Douglas Mattress is the best memory foam mattress in Canada. It uses all of its materials to create a comforting, pressure-relieving surface without slacking when it comes to support. The materials used are proprietary, improving upon the standard memory foam formula to provide the same memory foam ‘hug’ without the quicksand feeling of regular memory foam.

This means you’ll get the pressure relief qualities that memory foam is known for without feeling stuck. You can freely move around on top of the mattress, and shifting positions is easy. There are also multiple materials here that help with cooling. If you often wake up hot, the ecoLight cooling foam at the top of the mattress may be able to help. It works with the CoolSense cover, which wicks away moisture.

Together, these layers reduce the discomfort that usually comes when body heat builds up within foam layers. Traditional memory foam is notorious for retaining heat, but the cooling foam and alternative materials here do their best to keep you cooler throughout the night. These materials also help reduce motion, so those who sleep with restless partners stay still and comfortable throughout the night.

This medium-firm mattress relieves pressure for most Canadian sleepers. It’s a great mattress for side sleepers, stomach sleepers, and back sleepers. This mattress is the least expensive of Douglas’s three options. It is smaller and offers fewer features than the other mattresses in their lineup (the Douglas Alpine and the Douglas Summit). However, it’s still one of the most solid mattresses in Canada for its performance.

One of the highlights of this mattress is its lower price point. Compared to a lot of other Canadian mattresses (even memory foam ones), this is one of the most budget-friendly mattresses available considering its performance. You won’t find a better fit at a similar price, especially for Canadians who need a medium-firm mattress. We loved the way it contoured without allowing you to feel stuck, as well as how well it isolated motion and reduced heat. All the way around, the Douglas mattress performs extremely well as one of the best mattresses in Canada.

    What’s inside the Douglas mattress?

The Douglas Mattress uses layers of proprietary foams, including a latex alternative and memory foam layer. The comfort layers comprise the top 40% (or 4”) of the mattress, leaving room for plenty of sinkage while remaining supportive. Here are some of the materials you’ll find in the Douglas Mattress.

    • Infinitex Fibres. The Douglas CoolSense Cover is made with Infinitex fibres, a sustainable fibre that wicks away heat, sweat, and moisture. These fibres are woven into the cover–which is removable and washable without damaging the properties of these fibres.
    • Luxury ecoLight Cooling Gel Foam. The first layer is 2” of ecoLight cooling gel foam. Though this is a memory foam, it is made with 40% less carbon input than standard 4lb memory foam. This means it is better for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint. It feels durable and responsive, perhaps even more so than standard memory foam. It also doesn’t create the ‘quicksand’ feeling usually associated with memory foam.
    • Elastex Foam. 2” of premium Elastex foam creates the middle of the mattress. This is a latex alternative, meaning it is made differently from standard latex. The result is a responsive layer that doesn’t use the chemicals that often create standard latex. If you are allergic to latex, this layer helps you benefit from the great properties of the material without triggering allergies.
    • Motion Isolation Support Foam. The core of the Douglas mattress is 6” of motion isolation support foam, which helps to stop motion from traveling to the other side of the mattress. At the same time, it keeps your body aligned, comfortable, and neutral to reduce aches.

Try it for 365 risk-free nights during Douglas’s sleep trial

The Douglas Mattress has a 365-night trial. This risk-free trial is one of the longest in Canada, giving you a full year to return the mattress if you don’t like it. You have to sleep on the mattress for 21 nights before you can initiate a return, which gives you plenty of time to try it first.

Douglas will ask for pictures of the mattress to ensure that it is in good shape for donation. Then they will schedule a pickup. You must be home for this pickup, so they will ask you when you can be home so their partners can retrieve the mattress.

Once the mattress is picked up, a full refund for your mattress will be issued.

    Luxury without breaking the bank

Octave’s most luxurious memory foam mattress, the Octave Horizon, is one of our favourites. This mattress is a full 14” thick and includes 6” of comfort layers, making it one of the best options outside of a pillow top for a comforting sleep. No matter how you sleep, this medium-firm mattress works to relieve pressure, reduce strain, and keep your body perfectly aligned for comfort.

This mattress performs extremely well in most areas. It is one of our favourite mattresses in Canada for a reason! For an all-foam mattress, it offers some of the best temperature control on the Canadian market. The mixture of CopperGel foam, phase-changing materials, and tons of airflow make this mattress extremely cool to sleep on. It deals with heat quickly and effectively for even those who sleep hottest, reducing overheating and allowing you to wake up comfortable and well-rested.

It also does a great job at pressure relief. Of course, the 6” comfort layers help in this regard. It’s rare to find comfort layers this thick in most memory foam mattresses. There are also four full layers before the supportive core, which can help with balancing, pressure relief, and keeping you lifted out of the mattress. These layers are made from a variety of high-quality materials, including latex, memory foam, cooling gel foam, and latex alternatives. Together, these materials create a unique feel that you are unlikely to find elsewhere.

Even though this mattress didn’t achieve our top score for motion isolation and edge support, it still performed well in these areas compared to other memory foam mattresses. It does a great job of limiting motion and reducing vibration across the mattress. It also has stronger edges than some memory foam options, especially when compared to other memory foam mattresses.

The Octave Horizon is the top mattress from Octave, which means it costs a little more than some of the other options on this list. However, it won’t break the bank. With the performance it offers, it is more than worth the slightly elevated price when compared to more budget-friendly options. If you want a mattress that consistently outperforms the competition and focuses on pressure relief and comfort, the Octave Horizon might be the option for you.

    What’s inside the Octave Horizon?

The Octave Horizon uses some of the same proprietary material as the Douglas mattress. It also adds a few new materials and helps them work together in unique ways. This mattress is 14” thick and uses 6” of comfort layers. This is the thickest comfort layer we’ve looked at so far.

    • CryoFusion Cooling Nanofibres. The cover is woven with CryoFusion Cooling Nanofibres, which helps reduce heat and pull it away from you. Instead of building up beneath your body, it disperses and filters down through the other layers to eliminate heat kept close to your body.
    • CopperGel Memory Foam. The top layer of this mattress uses CopperGel memory foam. This type of foam is infused with copper, which helps conduct heat away from your body, reduce pressure, and reduce discomfort at all levels.
    • PolarMAX. PolarMAX is a phase-changing material that only heats to a certain temperature. If the temperature reaches an uncomfortable level, the phase-changing materials kick in to immediately filter heat away from your body to stop overheating. This layer sits on top of the CopperGel Memory foam layer within the mattress, which means they can work together to pull heat away from you.
    • Aerated Latex. Latex is extremely responsive, and aerated latex is the same material with hundreds of small ventilation holes to improve airflow. The additional airflow helps with excess body heat, but it also helps keep your sleep surface fresh. These holes don’t prevent the latex from being bouncy, supportive, and responsive. This layer is 1.5” thick.
    • EcoLuxe Cooling Gel Foam. This 2” layer of cooling gel foam fulfills a few roles in the mattress. It helps with deep pressure relief and deeper heat. This layer adapts to your shoulders and hips for better balance and alignment. It also banishes any heat that makes it deeper into the mattress, allowing you to stay comfortable even if you usually overheat.
    • Elastex. Like the Elastex foam in the Douglas mattress, this 2” layer reduces the ‘stuck’ feeling usually associated with memory foam mattresses. The mattress retains a springy, bouncy feel because of this latex alternative layer, so you can move freely throughout the night.
    • Multi-Zone Support Foam. This supportive foam layer is 6” thick on its own. It helps with targeted support. The channels cut into the foam held to promote better airflow, but they also provide strategic collapse points so the core supports your body better. You’ll get stronger support right where you need it.

Risk-free 365-night trial to try it out

The Octave Horizon comes with a 365-night sleep trial (like all other Octave mattresses). This sleep trial gives you a full year to test the mattress. Since you can’t test the mattress in person before you make a purchase, this trial gives you plenty of time to test it at home. Without the pushy salesperson asking you what you think during a two-minute test, you can develop a solid idea of whether the mattress works for you.

Octave requires that you sleep on the mattress for at least 21 nights before initiating a return. It takes time for your body to adjust to a new mattress, so you should continue the trial for at least 3 weeks before deciding that you don’t like it. Once you initiate a return, Octave will ask for images of the mattress to assess its condition. If accepted, the mattress will be donated to charity. Octave will set up a pick-up, and you must be home during this time. Once the mattress is picked up from your home, your refund will begin processing.

Affordable comfort with minimal motion transfer

The Endy Mattress is a Canadian-made, all-foam mattress known for impressive motion isolation and balanced support. It has been designed with a variety of sleepers in mind and comes in three different firmness options to accommodate different sleeping positions and body types. Whether you prefer to sleep on your side, back, or stomach, the Endy Mattress aims to deliver comfort and support without allowing you to sink too much. It is competitively priced, making it an accessible option for Canadians seeking a high-quality mattress without a hefty price tag.

One of the absolute standout features of this mattress is its ability to eliminate motion transfer, making it an excellent choice for couples, especially if you are a light sleeper. With the Endy mattress, you are less likely to feel movement from your partner, which can help you get an uninterrupted night’s sleep. The mattress also uses open-cell foam technology to improve airflow and temperature regulation. While it may not be as good at temperature regulation as many hybrid mattresses, it still performs well for a full-foam option.

The Endy Mattress provides good pressure relief, particularly for side sleepers. Its foam layers contour the body’s natural curves, thus helping to reduce strain on pressure points such as your hips and shoulders. The balanced firmness prevents excessive sinkage, which supports correct spinal alignment. Canadians who prefer a more cradling mattress can opt for the plush version, while those who like a firmer surface are likely to find the firm version more comfortable.

People who are looking for a full-foam mattress that offers good edge support will also be happy with the Endy Mattress. While the edge support is not as strong as some hybrid mattresses, it beats many other full-foam mattresses in this area. The mattress’s design ensures it has decent stability around its perimeter, which allows you to sit or sleep near the edge without feeling like you are about to slide off.

Being a full-foam mattress, the Endy Mattress is not as bouncy as hybrid models, but it still has a responsive construction that allows you to adjust positions during the night easily enough. Overall, the Endy Mattress offers a good balance of comfort and motion isolation at affordable prices, making it one of the top choices among full-foam mattresses in Canada.

    What’s inside the Endy Mattress?

The Endy Mattress now also comes in three different firmnesses. This mattress offers a firm, medium-firm and plush version, which sets it apart from the other options (which usually include a Medium-Firm and Firm mattress). This option is also unique because of the way it handles different firmnesses. Instead of having different layers or construction, this mattress uses different layer thicknesses to achieve a different firmness. Here’s what is inside both versions of the Endy Mattress.

    • Stretchy Cover. The cover of the Endy Mattress is extremely stretchy and breathable. The quilted material is soft and comfortable. Plus, it can be removed and washed at home. There are no special washing instructions to keep your Endy mattress fresh.
    • Endy Comfort Foam. Both versions of the Endy Mattress use a top layer of Endy’s proprietary comfort foam. This layer is made with open-cell memory foam. It is responsive enough to allow you to move freely. Meanwhile, the open cell design helps isolate heat, moving it away from you to reduce overheating. In the Plush version of this mattress, this layer has 25% more cushioning.
    • Transition foam. A middle layer of transition foam helps with pressure relief throughout the night. This layer also helps with motion transfer, and it’s part of the reason that the Endy mattress is well-known for being one of the best mattresses in Canada for motion isolation. This layer is softer in the Plush mattress for enhanced comfort.
    • Support foam. The bottom of the Endy mattress features a high-density foam base layer. This layer is firm enough to support you and stay supportive over time without interfering with comfort. The Plush version uses the same support layer, but it is 1” taller for additional support on the softer mattress.

Try at home for 100 nights

Endy offers a 100-night sleep trial on their mattresses, allowing customers to test them in the comfort of their homes. If unsatisfied, customers can start the return process after a minimum trial period, which ensures ample time to adjust to the new mattress.

The return process is straightforward. Once it has been requested, Endy will coordinate the pickup and issue a full refund upon return. This risk-free trial period reflects Endy’s commitment to customer satisfaction and confidence in their mattresses.

A budget-friendly option with premium features

The Emma Original Mattress is a popular choice among Canadians looking for an all-foam mattress. It is designed to offer a balance of comfort and support to make it suitable for most body types. It features a medium firmness level, meaning it is suitable for back, side, and combination sleepers.

Despite its affordable price point, the Emma Original Mattress includes high-quality materials that enhance its breathability, pressure relief, and durability. While it is thinner than some competitors’ mattresses, its multi-layered design ensures a comfortable sleeping experience.

This Emma mattress is constructed with three primary foam layers that work together to provide a feeling that is both responsive and adaptive. While all-foam mattresses can often sleep hot, the technology used in the Emma Original helps to keep air circulating and your sleeping surface cooler.

One of the Emma Original’s standout features is the excellent motion isolation it offers. The combination of memory foam and transition layers absorbs movement effectively, making it a great choice for couples or light sleepers. The mattress also performs well in pressure relief, especially for those who experience joint or back pain. While its edge support is slightly weaker compared to some other foam mattresses featured here, it still offers a stable sleeping surface.

Overall, the Emma Original Mattress offers a comfortable and supportive sleeping surface. It is an especially worthwhile option for those who prioritise affordability, pressure relief and motion isolation. However, it may not be the best option for Canadians who often sleep hot.

What’s inside the Emma Original Mattress?

The Emma Original mattress is a best-selling all-foam mattress from Emma. It comes at a budget price and is frequently marked down. However, it is also a thinner mattress. Sometimes, the comfort layers won’t be enough. The two comfort layers on this mattress represent just 3.2” of the mattress’s 10” height. Regardless, here are the materials used within the Emma Original mattress.

    • 100% polyester cover. The cover of the Emma mattress is soft and comfortable. It is made with 100% polyester, meaning that it can be washed easily without following additional care instructions.
    • Point Elastic airgocell foam. This top layer is breathable and cool. It uses unique proprietary technologies to absorb sweat and moisture and then evaporate it, keeping it out of your sleeping spaces. This layer of super soft foam is 1.6” thick. It’s safe to say that most of Emma’s cooling properties come from this layer.
    • Halo memory foam. This adaptive layer of memory foam is also 1.6” thick. It forms the mattress to your body, providing customized support and reducing strain. It helps create a memory foam ‘hug’ that provides excellent pressure point relief while keeping you lifted out of the mattress below.
    • HRX support layer. The 6.8” support layer is made with High Resiliency Extra, a type of foam that is extremely durable and reforms quickly once it is pushed out of shape. This layer features cut-out zones that help adapt to your body, providing key counter pressure to reduce strain and help you sleep comfortably. The design of this layer is tailored to spinal alignment and support for all sleeping positions, depending on how you sleep and your body type.

    A full year’s risk-free trial period

Emma is among those mattress companies in Canada that offer a 365-night sleep trial. This generous trial period ensures that you can be 100% certain the mattress is right for you. Because your body needs some time to adjust to your new mattress, Emma recommends you sleep on it at least 21 nights before deciding.

If you feel that the mattress is not meeting your expectations, for example, it is not the right firmness level for you or it makes you feel hot during the night, you can contact Emma’s customer service via phone, email, or online chat to initiate your return. They will then arrange for the mattress to be picked up and your full refund.

    All-in-one support, comfort, and performance

The Douglas Summit is the company’s premium mattress. Like their other mattresses, the Summit is an all-foam mattress. It has a medium-firm feel, which makes it a suitable option for most body types and sleeping positions. The mattress is well-balanced and provides a cushiony feel that allows you to sink in slightly while maintaining essential support for your spine.

One of the standout features of the Douglas Summit is its advanced, built-in cooling technology. It has a cover that feels cool to the touch, infused with cooling fibres that have been designed to regulate temperature effectively. It is because of its advanced cooling technologies that the Summit offers better temperature regulation than average full-foam mattresses.

If you are looking for a mattress that offers excellent motion isolation, then the Douglas Summit could be an ideal choice for you. Its all-foam construction minimises motion transfer and makes it an excellent choice for anyone who shares their bed. Its foam layers effectively prevent movement from travelling across the bed, meaning you are less likely to be disturbed by your partner moving during the night.

The Douglas Summit has better-than-average edge support and even scores higher than some hybrid beds with hybrids generally having stronger edges than full-foam mattresses. The stronger edges make the Douglas Summit a comfortable option for Canadians who often like to sleep on the edge of the bed.

Because the Douglas Summit performs well on all key criteria, it is suitable for most Canadian adults, but especially side, back, and combination sleepers. Those who prefer to sleep on their stomach may find they need a slightly firmer mattress, especially if they are heavier individuals, while petite Canadians may find they need a softer mattress to allow more contouring.

    What’s inside the Douglas Summit?

The Douglas Summit uses some of the same layers of proprietary foams as the Douglas mattress. It uses the same construction system, but the materials are thicker. This mattress also contains new materials. Since it’s the fully upgraded version of the original Douglas, we’ll go over the materials and construction here.

    • Infinitex Fibres and CryoFusion Cooling Nanofibres. The cover of the Douglas Summit uses both sustainable Infinitex fibres (which already help vent heat) and CryoFusion Cooling Nanofibres. These fibres reduce heat throughout the mattress, starting out cool to the touch before you lay down. Plus, this cover is completely machine-washable.
    • Polar Temperature Balancing. A coating on top of the first layer of foam uses phase-changing materials (PCM) for temperature control. Phase-changing materials only heat up to a certain temperature. Once that temperature is reached, it vents off all excess heat continually throughout the night.
    • ecoLight Cooling Gel Foam. Because Summit is the most upgraded version of the Douglas mattress, it features the thickest layer of cooling gel foam in their mattress lineup. 2.5” of ecoLight cooling gel foam vents excess heat away from you, keeping excess temperatures away as you sleep. This works together with the PCM layer above to keep you cooler throughout the night.
    • Premium Elastex. The middle layer is made with premium Elastex, a responsive latex alternative that allows you to move freely. This layer cradles deep pressure points without you feeling stuck in the mattress. When you turn over and get comfortable again, you’ll have the same level of comfortable support thanks to this layer.
    • Motion Isolation Support Foam. The base of the mattress works to isolate motion so your partner doesn’t wake you up when they toss and turn. This 7” layer also provides extreme support for all sleeping positions, so you stay comfortable night after night.

Try and home through all seasons

Douglas is another Canadian mattress company that offers a full year’s trial period. When you get to try your mattress at home for 365 nights, you can see how it works for you during all seasons. That way, you can be certain that it helps you keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

The trial period starts the day you receive your new mattress. Like most other mattress companies, Douglas asks you to use the mattress for at least 21 nights before you ask to return it. If you decide to return the mattress within the trial period, Douglas will arrange a pickup and refund your money once the mattress has been collected.

Supportive foam layers offering pressure relief

The Casper Mattress is an all-foam mattress designed to provide a balance of support and pressure relief. It has a medium-firm feel which caters to a wide range of sleepers, particularly those who sleep on their back or side. The mattress’s responsive layers of foam facilitate effortless movement without feeling at all stuck, making it suitable for combination sleepers who frequently change positions during the night.

One of the key features of the Casper Mattress is the way it supports the different areas of your body. The foam layers ensure the hips receive enough support to prevent them from sinking, while the shoulders are cushioned for improved comfort. This can promote healthy sleep posture and ease pressure points, allowing you to sleep more comfortably.

In terms of motion isolation, the Casper Mattress performs well. Its all-foam construction absorbs movement effectively, thus reducing disturbances caused by a partner’s movements. However, the mattress design is somewhat let down by its edge support, which is not as strong as some of the other all-foam mattresses on our list offer. If you prefer to sleep on the edge, you may feel like you could easily roll off the bed.

Another group of Canadians who may find the Casper does not meet their requirements are those who often sleep hot. Despite the cooling features this mattress offers, it does not allow heat to escape as well as some of the other mattresses we have reviewed.

Many readers will already have noticed that this mattress is one of the more expensive options among the all-foam mattresses featured here. It also has one of the shorter warranties offered. Despite this, the Casper Mattress is a popular choice in Canada and offers a balance of support and comfort for many body types and sleeping positions.

    What’s inside the Casper Mattress?

The Casper mattress is a full-foam mattress made with layers of different types of foam to provide bounce and contouring. The mattress is 10 inches tall with a 3-inch thick comfort layer to reduce pressure points whilst your spine is supported.

    • Cozy Knit Cover. The mattress is covered with a soft knit, stretching cover. It is comfortable against the skin and allows the foam layers underneath to respond to movement as it stretches around them.
    • Airscape™ Foam. The top layer of the mattress is made with perforated breathable foam that has been designed to increase airflow and reduce heat retention.
    • Premium Memory Foam. The next layer in the Casper Mattress is made with premium memory foam. It cradles your body and absorbs pressure so you can stay more comfortable while you sleep.
    • ProSupport Foam. The base layer is made of high-density foam that provides overall support and durability to the mattress. It prevents sagging and ensures the mattress maintains its shape and performance over time.

A premium memory foam mattress for a cooler sleep experience

The Octave Mirage is a premium memory foam mattress that has been designed to provide a balanced and supportive sleep experience. With a medium-firm feel, it caters to various sleeping positions by ensuring both comfort and proper spinal alignment so you can wake up more refreshed.

This mattress by Octave stands out for its advanced cooling features and pressure-relieving properties. These qualities make it a suitable choice for Canadians seeking a cooler and more comfortable night’s rest. Its cooling features include phase-changing materials to dissipate heat, which helps you maintain a more comfortable body temperature.

The Octave Mirage also offers good motion isolation. Its memory foam absorbs vibrations from movement and prevents them from travelling from one part of the mattress to another. This, together with its ability to keep you cool, makes it a great option for couples.

While edge support is often a concern with all-foam mattresses, the Octave Mirage performs well in this area, too. Its supportive edge prevents sagging caused by sleeping or sitting on the edge of the bed and maximises usable surface.

Finally, the Octave Mirage also offers plenty of pressure relief, which is critical for preventing aches and pains. Its design targets pressure points in your hips, shoulders, and back and promotes proper alignment of your spine.

    What’s inside the Octave Mirage?

The Octave Mirage has a balanced construction that prevents excessive sinkage while maintaining a weightless, cloud-like comfort. At 13 inches, it is higher than the average all-foam mattresses and has a 6 inches thick comfort layer for contouring and pressure relief.

    • CryoFusion™ Cooling Nanofibre Cover. The Octave Mirage features a removable, machine-washable cover with CryoFusion cooling nanofibres. This is a proprietary technology used by Octave and other Goodmorning.com brands to reduce heat retention at the surface.
    • CopperGel™ Memory Foam + PolarMAX®. A layer of memory foam with phase-change materials and infused with copper, a material known for its heat-conducting and antimicrobial properties. This layer pulls heat away from the body, helping to regulate temperature throughout the night.
    • Aerated latex foam. This layer promotes breathability with hundreds of perforations that enhance airflow and allow cool air to circulate to prevent heat buildup. The latex foam layer also offers gentle contouring and reduces pressure points.
    • Premium Elastex® foam. A transitional layer designed to ease pressure and improve movement across the mattress. It is a latex alternative that is more buoyant and responsive than traditional memory foam. It offers extra cushioning, which makes the mattress particularly well-suited for those requiring additional pressure relief.
    • Multi-zone support foam with air channels. The base of the Octave Mirage is made with high-density foam to provide durability and long-term support. It has precision-cut air channels to improve breathability and zoned support areas to reinforce crucial pressure points.

    No-risk one-year sleep trial

The Octave Mirage comes with a 365-night sleep trial, allowing customers to test the mattress for a full year before making their final decision. This generous policy reflects Octave’s confidence in its product and its commitment to customer satisfaction.

If the Octave Mirage isn’t the right fit, you can initiate a return after a minimum of 21 nights. This adjustment period ensures your body has enough time to adapt to the mattress before deciding. The return process is hassle-free, with no restocking or return fees. You will receive a full refund of the purchase price once they have collected their mattress.

    Affordable Canadian Craftsmanship

The Douglas Alpine mattress is a prime example of superior Canadian design and craftsmanship. Positioned between the Douglas Original Mattress and the premium Summit Mattress, the Alpine provides enhanced features without a significant increase in cost compared to the Original Mattress. This makes it an attractive option for those seeking luxury within a reasonable budget.

The Douglas Alpine uses an advanced temperature regulation system that is designed to wick away heat and moisture and ensure a cool sleeping surface. While not the most effective at keeping you cool while you sleep, it scores higher than average for its cooling properties.

The Alpine excels in motion isolation, which is a crucial factor for couples or those whose sleep is easily disturbed. The mattress’s all-foam construction effectively minimises motion transfer and ensures that sleepers can enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep with minimal interruptions caused by vibrations from movement.

If pressure relief is a key factor for you, the Douglas Alpine should be one of the foam mattresses to consider. The mattress has thoughtfully designed layers that conform to the body’s shape, alleviating pressure points and promoting proper alignment.

In summary, the Douglas Alpine delivers a blend of advanced cooling technology, motion isolation, and pressure-relieving support. Since it is positioned as a midline model, it provides an excellent balance between luxury features and affordability, making it a worthy option for Canadians seeking a high-quality all-foam mattress.

    What’s inside the Douglas Alpine?

When it comes to mattress construction, the Alpine sits firmly in the middle. At 11 inches high, it is one inch higher than the Original and one inch lower than the Summit. It has a 4-inch thick comfort layer that is made with two types of foam to provide pressure relief.

    • CoolSense Cover. The Douglas Alpine mattress has a breathable and washable CoolSense cover that has been woven with sustainable Infinitex fibres to wick away heat and moisture. The cover is easily removable with a zipper to make it easy to wash and refresh.
    • ecoLight® Cooling Gel Foam + Polar® Temperature Balancing. The first comfort layer is made with ecoLight cooling gel foam. This advanced foam, coated with a layer of Polar phase-changing material, helps regulate temperature by reducing heat retention for a more consistent sleep temperature.
    • Premium Elastex® Foam. The second comfort layer is thick Elastex foam, which is a synthetic alternative to natural latex. This responsive material provides excellent cushioning and relieves pressure. It also enhances mobility so you don’t feel stuck in the mattress.
    • Motion Isolation Support Foam. At the base is a 6.5-inches high-density motion isolation support foam which provides stability and alignment. This layer helps minimise motion transfer, making it an excellent choice for couples or light sleepers. It also supports proper weight distribution for a proper spinal alignment and a more comfortable sleep experience.

One of the longest sleep trials on the Canadian market

Like the other mattresses from Douglas, the Alpine comes with a 365-night sleep trial. Douglas’s sleep trial period is among the longest in Canada and ensures you can test your mattress thoroughly before you have to decide.

Whilst the company firmly believes you will be happy with their mattress, whether it is the Alpine or one of the other mattresses you have chosen, you can ask to return the mattress once the minimum trial period has ended. As with the other models, the pickup is free and refunds are issued once the mattress has been picked up.

    Best Organic Mattresses in Canada

The final group of mattresses in our list of best mattresses for 2025 includes a selection of organic mattresses. These are generally hybrid mattresses, made with all-natural materials, such as latex instead of manmade foams. They offer environmentally friendly mattress options for eco-conscious Canadians.

Editor's Choice: Silk & Snow Organic Mattress 🍁

The Silk & Snow Organic Mattress is a great choice for anyone looking for a more eco-friendly mattress. Not only is it a very reasonably priced organic mattress, it also performs extremely well, delivering both comfort and support and helping you maintain a more comfortable body temperature while you sleep.

The organic mattress from Silk & Snow has been designed with certified organic materials and thus offers a natural and chemical-free alternative to traditional mattresses. The combination of organic latex, wool, and cotton creates a surface that is both breathable and supportive and adapts to different sleeping positions. Silk & Snow’s high-quality materials ensure durability while providing you with a mattress free from harmful toxins.

A standout feature of the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress is the organic latex, which provides a slightly bouncy yet cushioning feel. Latex is naturally breathable, which helps to regulate body temperature and prevent overheating while sleeping. Latex is also known for its resilience, maintaining its shape without sagging. Unlike memory foams, organic latex maintains its integrity over time while still contouring to the body for pressure relief.

As well as offering good pressure relief and temperature regulation, this mattress also performs well in terms of motion isolation. While latex does have more bounce than memory foam, the layers used in the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress combined with the individually pocketed springs effectively prevent vibrations from movement travelling across the mattress, which makes it a suitable choice for both individuals and couples.

This organic mattress also offers plenty of support both in terms of spinal alignment and edge support. It features zoned support to ensure your body is correctly supported with firmer coils used where more support is needed. It also incorporates firm edge support to prevent the edges of the mattress from sagging even if you often sleep or sit on the edge of the bed. This firm edge can also provide support when getting in and out of bed, which is an important feature for anyone with mobility issues. Overall, the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress is a great mattress in terms of eco-friendliness, budget, and performance features.

What’s inside the S&S Organic Mattress?

The organic mattress from Silk & Snow is a hybrid mattress that has replaced manmade foam layers with latex. It comes with three different firmness levels from plush to firm to accommodate a wide range of body types and sleeping positions. The firm version is 10”, medium-firm 12” and plush 14” thick. The details below refer to the medium-firm options since this is the most common choice among Canadians.

    • GOTS-certified organic cotton cover. The cover, which is 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, is soft, breathable, and free from synthetic chemicals and pesticides. Organic cotton is great for enhancing airflow and keeping the surface cool and comfortable throughout the night. It is also naturally hypoallergenic and moisture-wicking.
    • GOTS-certified organic wool quilt layer. Under the cover is a layer of organic wool. This layer wicks away moisture and helps to regulate temperature to keep sleepers at a comfortable temperature. It also acts as a natural fire barrier, so there is no need for chemical flame retardants.
    • Quilted latex layer. This layer is made with GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, which is known for its responsive and supportive qualities. It contours to the body while maintaining some bounce, preventing the “stuck” feeling often associated with memory foam mattresses. Latex is highly durable, resists sagging, and promotes better spinal alignment.
    • GOLS-certified latex layer. Next, there is a layer of organic Dunlop latex, which enhances the mattress’s durability and stability. This layer adds further support and contouring, while adding another barrier between you and the coil base.
    • Pocket coil base. The base of this organic mattress features pocketed coils, arranged in ergonomic zones and designed to provide targeted support where it is needed most. The coils in the centre are firmer, offering enhanced lumbar support, softer where more contouring is needed, and the coils near the edges are reinforced for improved edge support.

Try organic comfort for 365 nights

If you are considering the organic mattress from Silk & Snow, then you might be persuaded by their 365-night sleep trial. Deciding on a mattress is a major decision and Silk & Snow want to take some of the worry away with their sleep trial.

The sleep trial starts when you receive the mattress. If you are not satisfied with it, you can request a return between the end of the adjustment period and the 365th day of the trial. When you request a return, Silk & Snow will arrange for the mattress to be collected, and once taken away, your full refund.

Customized organic mattress to ensure comfort and support

The Obasan is the most expensive organic mattress on our list, but for a good reason: they are all made by hand to meet your specific sleeping requirements. When you order a mattress from them, you start by choosing a size, the number of sleepers, and then proceed through other steps to determine the best mattress structure for you.

Because the mattress is made to your specifications, you can expect a level of comfort and support that will be hard to match. When it comes to pressure relief, the Obasan mattress does not disappoint. The mattress is tailored to your weight and preferred sleeping position and supports and contours in the right places. This can be very beneficial to anyone suffering from joint or back pain, as having a mattress that supports the correct spinal alignment can ease pain.

The Obasan is also a good choice for Canadians who often sleep hot. Its organic materials are not just eco-friendly but also naturally temperature regulating. The materials actively wick away moisture and because they are breathable, they do not retain heat. Instead, warmer air is released and replaced with cooler air, which helps you keep cool while you sleep.

If you share your bed, you can trust the Obasan Organic mattress to provide excellent motion isolation. When you get an Obasan mattress for two people, each side of the mattress is constructed to meet your requirements. This means that while the two sides join seamlessly together, there is minimal motion transfer between the two sides.

If there is one area where the Obasan does not perform as well as some of the other organic mattresses we have reviewed, it is the edge support it offers. If you regularly sleep on the edge of the bed, you may prefer a mattress with a reinforced edge. However, for most people who have their mind set on an Obasan, a slightly lower rating for edge support is unlikely to be a deal breaker, considering all the other benefits offered by a custom-made mattress.

    What’s inside the Obasan Organic?

The Obasan Organic Mattresses are handcrafted in Ottawa and each of them is made to order to ensure your mattress is uniquely yours. With 40 years of experience in making mattresses by hand and using premium quality natural materials, you can trust Obasan to construct a great mattress, tailored for you.

Obasan offers three organic mattress models for adults, the Classic, the Deluxe, and the Grand. The Classic features 8”, the Deluxe 10”, and the Grand 12” of organic latex.

    • Organic cotton cover. The cover on the Obasan Organic Mattress is soft and breathable and made from GOTS-certified organic cotton. It helps regulate body temperature and moisture levels, so you have a comfortable, naturally hypoallergenic surface for sleep. It is quilted with organic wool, a natural fire retardant.
    • Organic wool. The first comfort layer of the Obasan Organic Classic is organic wool, known for its temperature-regulating properties. It helps wick away moisture and ensures your mattress stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
    • Organic latex. Next, the Obasan features a core layer of latex, which is derived from rubber trees. The latex is natural and organic, slightly bouncy and offers a high level of durability and long-lasting comfort. This latex layer is designed to reduce pressure points and can help ease joint and back pain.

    180-night comfort exchange

Instead of a sleep trial where you can return your mattress and receive a refund if you are not satisfied with your mattress, Obasan offers a 180-night comfort exchange.

This means that while you cannot return your mattress, you can have it adjusted. If you inform the company within the 180 days, they will adjust the firmness level of your mattress so it delivers the support and comfort you expect.

    A luxurious vegan mattress

The Essentia Stratami mattress combines organic cotton with organic latex to provide a luxurious, vegan sleeping experience. It has been designed for Canadians looking for a mattress that is both comfortable and eco-friendly. This high-performance mattress aims to provide optimal support and comfort for all sleepers while being extra mindful of the environment.

Made with a natural organic latex core, the Stratami mattress provides a responsive, slightly bouncy feel while ensuring durability and breathability. This latex layer helps to distribute body weight evenly and promotes proper spinal alignment, thus making it ideal for back and side sleepers. The organic latex is also naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, which makes it a great choice for people with sensitivities.

The Stratami also alleviates pressure points, which can help you get a more restful sleep. While the mattress is suitable for all sleeping positions, side sleepers in particular will benefit from the Stratami’s ability to prevent pressure points, especially around your hips and shoulders.

While many mattresses on our list could be classed as cooling mattresses, the Stratami is different. Instead, it has been designed to be temperature-neutral. This means that it does not actively cool the sleeping surface, but neither does it sleep hot. Although this will suit many Canadians, if you often sleep hot and need a mattress with active cooling technologies, the Stratami is unlikely to meet your needs.

The Stratami may not suit hot sleepers, but it is a worthwhile option for couples. When you share your bed, motion isolation becomes one of the key performance features you want to focus on, especially if your sleep is regularly disturbed by your partner moving. The latex layers in the Stratami mattress effectively absorb vibrations so you are less likely to feel when your partner moves during the night.

    What’s inside the Essentia Stratami?

The Essentia Stratami is a fully vegan mattress, so you will find no animal products in this mattress. Neither will you find polyurethane foam, springs, fiber batting, or latex proteins. All the materials used in the mattress have been thoroughly tested by the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine to ensure their safety.

    • GOTS Certified organic cotton cover. The Stratami mattress comes with an organic cotton cover which is a naturally soft and temperature-regulating material. The cover can be removed and washed to keep it hygienic and fresh.
    • Bucaneve organic cotton liner. Between the cover and the first layer of latex is a liner made from cotton. This liner is nontoxic and allergy-free and enhances the breathability of the top part of the mattress.
    • GOLS Certified organic latex support core. This is the first layer of organic latex in the Stratami mattress. It is designed to ensure proper support for your back and promote correct spinal alignment.
    • Dome-shaped active organic latex foam. The next layer is also organic latex, but shaped like a dome. This design ensures there is airflow between the surface of the mattress and your body. It also helps to eliminate pressure points.

Choose your firmness level with Avocado Green

The Avocado Green Organic Mattress is known for its eco-friendly materials and high-scoring performance across various sleep quality measurements. This mattress is made with 100% organic materials, including latex, wool, and cotton, which are then combined with a support system of individually wrapped coils. As a result, the Avocado Green is suitable for various sleeping styles and body types.

The Avocado Green Mattress has excellent temperature regulation thanks to the combination of natural materials and coils. The organic latex, cotton and wool components are naturally breathable, thus facilitating effective airflow throughout the mattress. These materials effectively dissipate heat, so that you have a cooler sleeping environment, an especially important mattress quality for Canadians who sleep or live in areas with hot summers.

In terms of pressure relief, natural latex provides gentle contouring, which helps to distribute body weight evenly and prevent pressure points. The contouring offered by the latex layer is enough for most Canadians to sleep comfortably without aches and pains. However, side sleepers, in particular petite individuals, might find the mattress too firm, which can lead to inadequate cushioning for the shoulders and hips. Luckily, the Avocado Green comes in two firmness options, so those who need a softer surface can opt for the plush version.

Another area where the mattress performs well is offering edge support. Thanks to its strong edge, there is minimal sinkage when sitting or sleeping near the edges. Instead, the mattress has a stable feel across the entire surface. This feature is particularly useful for couples as it maximises the usable sleeping area.

However, some couples may avoid the Avocado Green because its lower score for motion isolation. If you are someone who is easily disturbed by your partner moving in bed, the Avocado Green may not be the best mattress option for you. On the other hand, the combination of latex and springs creates a responsive surface that makes changing positions easier. So if you are a combination sleeper who changes position often and not too concerned about motion transfer, then the Avocado Green could be a great choice for you.

    What’s inside the Avocado Green?

The Avocado Green Mattress is a hybrid mattress made with 100% organic materials on top and an innerspring base at the bottom. It comes in two firmness levels: standard and pillow top. While the standard mattress is recommended for stomach and back sleepers, the pillow top is ideal for side and combination sleepers and some back sleepers, depending on their weight.

    • Organic cotton cover. The cover of this mattress is breathable organic cotton. It is soft under the skin and provides a comfortable sleeping surface, while also contributing to the mattress’s breathability. The organic cotton is GOTS-certified, meaning it has been grown without harmful chemicals or pesticides.
    • Organic latex layer. The top layer is 100% organic latex, which creates a naturally resilient and supportive sleep surface. This latex comes from organic rubber trees and contains no synthetic chemicals. It is both comfortable and supportive, contouring the body while offering a bouncy and responsive sleeping surface.
    • Organic wool layer. Under the layer of latex is a plush, natural layer of organic wool. All wool used by Avocado comes from sheep that are raised in a humane and sustainable manner. The wool acts as a natural fire barrier, which is essential for meeting fire safety standards without using harmful chemicals. Organic wool is also naturally moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating, helping you maintain a comfortable body temperature.
    • Pocketed coil support core. The core of the Avocado Green Mattress has up to 1,414 individually pocketed coils that have been made from recycled steel. The coils offer support and stability and help to align your spine so you can wake up without aches and pains caused by an ill-fitting mattress. In addition, the pocketed coil system promotes airflow and helps with temperature regulation.
    • Reinforced edge support (optional with pillow-top). If you opt for the pillow-top version of the mattress, you can have an additional layer of latex added to improve the mattress’s edge support. This additional support prevents the edges from sagging and helps to maximise the usable surface; an important consideration if you like to sleep on the edge of the mattress.

Avocado’s year-long sleep trial gives you plenty of time

Avocado offers a 365-night sleep trial for their mattresses, allowing customers to test their new mattress in the comfort of their own home. This extended sleep trial means you can see how well the mattress suits you from warm nights in the summer to cold ones in the winter.

The first day of the trial is the day you receive the mattress. You then have up to the last day of the trial to decide. Note that Avocado asks you to use the mattress for at least a month before requesting a return so your body has had enough time to adjust to your new sleeping surface. If you decide the Avocado Green Mattress is not right for you, you can return it and receive a refund or change it to another Avocado mattress.

A full-latex mattress with patented organic foam

The Essentia Tatami Mattress is a natural, organic mattress that has been designed to provide comfort and support while minimising its impact on the environment. Made with certified organic materials, the Tatami mattress aims to deliver a balanced sleep experience. It is a medium-firm mattress, which makes it a suitable mattress option for most Canadians’ sleeping preferences and body types.

The Tatami mattress includes a layer of Essentia’s Beyond Latex™ organic foam. This material is breathable and allows for natural airflow, thus helping to maintain a temperature-neutral sleeping environment. It also prevents heat buildup, which is an issue often associated with traditional memory foam mattresses. As a result, you are less likely to experience overheating during the night and more likely to get a restful night’s sleep.

Because Essentia’s organic latex foam is designed to act like memory foam, it provides contouring support while also absorbing movement. This feature reduces motion transfer across the mattress and makes it a suitable choice for people sharing their bed. On the other hand, it does not have the same bounce as some other latex mattresses, so if you prefer a more bouncy surface, you may find other latex mattresses meet your needs better.

The Tatami mattress has two different latex layers that have been designed to offer both contouring and support to relieve pressure while keeping the spine in a neutral position. The upper layer of latex offers support, while the lower latex layer provides comfort so you can wake up without aches and pains that non-supportive, non-contouring mattresses can cause.

One area where the Tatami falls short of expectations is edge support. While latex is generally firmer than memory foams, the Tatami mattress could benefit from additional edge reinforcement. This would allow users to better utilise the full surface of the mattress and support getting in and out of the bed. However, the edge support is not non-existent and many Canadians would not see it as an issue if they enjoy all the other features the Tatami offers.

    What’s inside the Essentia Tatami?

The Essentia Tatami is an 8” tall mattress formed with two layers of foam. Unlike many modern organic mattresses that use both latex and springs, the Tatami relies on latex to deliver a comfortable sleeping surface.

    • GOTS Certified organic cotton cover. The Tatami mattress has a removable cover made with organic cotton. This material is naturally cooling and helps wick away moisture while you sleep.
    • Nontoxic flame barrier. While some organic mattresses choose to use wool as a fire retardant, Essentia has opted for Kevlar. It is an allergy free, nontoxic fire retardant and covers the entire Tatami mattress.
    • GOLS Certified organic latex support core. This is the first of the two latex layers used in the Tatami mattress. This layer is designed to ensure your back is properly supported and your spine is in a natural alignment.
    • Beyond Latex™ active organic foam. The second latex layer is Essentia’s proprietary organic foam. While the first layer offers support, this second latex layer offers contouring and is designed to reduce pressure points.

    Unique 120 night sleep trial

Like most other mattress companies in Canada, Essentia has a sleep trial period for customers who purchase one of their mattresses. The Essentia sleep trial is 120 nights with an adjustment period of 30 nights.

If you decide after sleeping on the mattress at least 30 nights that you are not happy with it, you can contact Essentia to start the return process. Once your return is approved, Essentia will arrange a mattress collection and process your refund.

Providing sustainable, healthy sleep for adults and children

The Avocado Eco Organic Mattress is a latex hybrid mattress designed to offer comfort and support using eco-friendly materials. Rated five out of ten for firmness, it sits perfectly in the middle of the firmness scale. The Eco Organic Mattress is available for both adults and children, so all members of the family can enjoy a sustainable, chemical-free sleeping experience.

Because the Eco Organic is a medium firm mattress, it is a good choice for side and combination sleepers, while back and stomach sleepers may prefer a slightly firmer surface. Heavier individuals may also find that the Eco mattress allows them to sink too deep into the mattress. For others, this mattress will deliver a balance of pressure relief and spinal support to prevent joint and back aches.

The Eco mattress from Avocado is a great option for Canadians looking for a mattress that helps them maintain a comfortable body temperature. The combination of naturally breathable organic cotton and moisture-wicking wool improves airflow and dissipates heat. The temperature-regulating properties are further enhanced by the natural coolness of the Dunlop latex and the pocketed coil base, which allow air to flow throughout the mattress.

You might also want to consider the Avocado Eco mattress if you need a mattress with strong edge support. Generally, you will need a sturdy edge if you like to sleep on the edge of the bed or need support getting in or out of bed. The Eco has a robust coil system that reinforces its perimeter, allowing you to use the edge for sleeping and sitting without having to worry about it sagging under your weight.

Quite typically for hybrid mattresses that use latex instead of memory foam, there is room for improvement in terms of motion isolation. Because latex naturally has some bounce, it does not absorb movement as well as memory foams. On the other hand, it provides a responsive surface, which is great for combination sleepers and also stops you from feeling like you are stuck to the mattress.

What’s inside the Avocado Eco Organic mattress?

The Avocado Eco Organic Mattress is a ten inches tall mattress with a two inches thick comfort layer. It uses organic materials and combines them with a spring base to create a mattress that delivers temperature-regulating and pressure-relieving properties to keep you comfortable through the night.

    • Organic cotton cover. The Avocado Eco Organic Mattress is covered in  100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, which is soft and breathable. It is also moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating, keeping the surface of the mattress cool and comfortable.
    • Organic wool layer. The top layer of the Eco mattress is GOTS-certified organic wool. Wool is a natural flame retardant, thus eliminating the need for synthetic chemicals. It also improves breathability and temperature regulation, and provides a plush feel.
    • Organic latex layer. The comfort layer is made with GOLS-certified organic latex. Organic latex is responsive and provides pressure relief, allowing hips and shoulders to sink and keeping the spine neutral. Since latex is naturally resilient, it is resistant to sagging, ensuring long-lasting comfort.
    • Coil support system. The base of the mattress hosts a zoned coil system made from recycled steel. The coils are wrapped individually to improve motion isolation and provide targeted support for your body. The coils are also used to improve the edge support, which helps the mattress maintain its shape for longer.

A full year to try the Eco Organic

Because the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress is a significant investment for many people, it is natural to have some reservations. At Avocado, they understand this, which is why they offer a 365-night sleep trial. This way your investment is risk-free: if you are not happy, you can request a refund.

When you first receive your Avocado mattress, you need to use it for a minimum of 30 nights. If after the 30 nights you feel the mattress does not provide what you are looking for, contact Avocado to arrange the return and your refund.

Still have questions? Here are some of the most common questions readers ask us.

How often should you replace your mattress?

You should replace your mattress every 5 to 7 years. Some mattresses last longer, so this is just a general rule. Regardless of the amount of time you’ve owned the mattress, there are some indicators that it’s time to replace your mattress. If you find yourself waking up with aches and pains, pressure points, or other general discomfort, your mattress may be breaking down. Sinkage over time is normal. Once it begins affecting your sleep, it’s time to get a fresh new mattress that will help you sleep more comfortably.

What type of mattress is best for back pain?

A medium-firm hybrid mattress is the best for back pain. These mattresses often focus on increased lumbar support, which helps keep your body in a neutral position. This prevents undue strain on your spine, creating a more comfortable sleep environment in all sleeping positions. If you regularly suffer from back pain, make sure to consult with a medical professional before purchasing a mattress.

Do these mattresses ship for free?

Most of the mattresses on our list ship for free to most locations in Canada. However, it’s worth checking the listing for each mattress to determine if shipping will be free to your location. Some remote locations may require a shipping fee. Make sure to check with customer service for each mattress company if you are afraid that delivery to your remote location may require a delivery fee.

    What else do I need?

Once you have chosen the perfect mattress, there are a few additional products you need to pick up. First, you should consider a mattress foundation, frame, or box spring. We have some amazing picks from Canadian companies here. Most companies require their mattresses to be kept on a foundation during use. If you fail to keep the mattress on a compatible foundation, they may not honor any warranty claims you make down the road.

After you’ve picked up a frame or adjustable bed, you’ll need a mattress protector. You must keep your mattress in a sanitary condition. A mattress protector can help avoid staining, damage, and odours that can occur over time. If you are trying out a mattress with a sleep trial, it’s even more important to use a mattress protector. Some companies will not accept returns (even during the sleep trial) if the mattress is damaged.

Sheets, pillows, duvets, and other bedding options are the final step. Make sure to choose options that fit the mattress (choose the same standard size or check the sizing on the bedding to ensure that it will fit). If you choose to use a duvet, you will also need a duvet cover. Comforters are also a viable option for getting your bed ready to go.

Thankfully, we have a host of articles on these extras to ensure that you find the ones that work best for you!

Thank you for including all of the organic options on this list. That really helps me find the options that mean the most to me, and I love that they are Canadian as well. 🍁

    2. Raymond D

Oh no, are Simba mattresses no longer available? I purchased a Simba a few years ago and I was looking forward to getting another.

      1. kimberly

Unfortunately, Simba mattresses are no longer available through the Simba website. Sleep Country might still have a few for sale, but I can’t confirm which ones at this point. Sorry!

    3. Gene Blenneau

I was between the Logan & Cove Choice and the Douglas Summit. Ended up picking L&C and it’s been great. Just a heads-up: the box is not a 1-person job if you have to take it up stairs. Make sure you have help bringing it in.

    4. Benny Polan

Bought the Silk & Snow Hybrid on sale for $999 during Boxing Week last year. Crazy value for what you get compared to Sleep Country in the store. If you’re a side sleeper like me and want pressure relief but still some bounce, this is it.

    5. Morone Kay

Great list, thank you very much Made in CA team. Do any of these Canadian mattress brands offer in-home setup or take away your old mattress? I live in a condo and can’t haul a mattress out myself.

      1. Dylan

Yes, several. But it depends on your location and where you are in the country as most of the companies above partner with 3rd party vendors to provide this service. Before placing the order it’s usually on the order page or before checkout, but you can always ask their support to double-check.

    6. Mary Grandow

Thanks for the Canadian focus, we need to support each us now more than ever with these American tariffs. It’s getting harder to tell which companies are actually Canadian-owned vs just made here. Appreciate the 🍁 symbol – very helpful!
