BlackBerry Limited was founded by Mike Lazaridis and Doug Fregin in 1984 in Waterloo, Ontario as Research in Motion. In 1999, the mobile communications company released its first device: a pager that could be used to email. The first BlackBerry smartphone was released in 2002 and for a while, BlackBerries were the second most popular phone after Nokia.
However, they struggled to compete with the likes of iPhone and Samsung in the 2010s, and in 2016, the company decided to outsource hardware production and focus on software. Today, BlackBerry’s products are used by various car manufacturers and their security products by government agencies to prevent ransomware and hacking attacks.
