What We Liked Best

What We Disliked

Silk & Snow makes a host of great mattresses, and the original all-foam Silk & Snow mattress is just the beginning. While this mattress is the most basic option available through Silk & Snow, it is a solid choice for those who need additional pressure relief and reduced motion transfer. This mattress also does a great job at temperature control, meaning those who sleep warm can rest comfortably.

The comfortable cover is made with antimicrobial materials. These materials reduce and restrict the growth of bacteria, which means your mattress stays fresh. When it’s time to wash the cover, you can throw it into your washing machine with your bed sheets. It’s simple to reattach once it is dry. The top layer of foam is high-density gel cooling foam, which reduces pressure points and offers extreme durability. As a result, this mattress won’t sink or sag as standard memory foam would.

A middle layer of transition foam helps with additional support and pressure point relief. This layer also reduces motion transfer, meaning that those who sleep with restless partners won’t wake up when their partner tosses and turns. This layer also balances your body, provides alignment, and reduces strain on your joints. No matter how you sleep, this is an extremely important layer.

Finally, the core of the mattress features a dense, durable foundation. This layer helps keep you supported so you are lifted out of the mattress instead of sinking in. This layer helps the other layers perform as well as they do. This is a good option for lightweight and average sleepers who need pressure relief, cooling, and motion isolation.

What We Learned

The Silk & Snow Mattress is a great choice for most Canadians, but heavier sleepers should stay away. For average and lightweight sleepers, the pressure relief from this mattress is extremely comfortable. It also helps reduce excess motion, making it ideal for those who need to stay comfortable while their partners toss and turn. The high-density foam creates a durable mattress overall.

We Recommend the Silk & Snow Mattress for:

  • Average to lightweight sleepers. This mattress is a bit on the thin side, so heavier sleepers may not find the comfort and pressure relief they need here.
  • Those who need additional pressure relief. High-density foam layers provide better pressure relief than standard memory foam, making this mattress a great choice for those who need help with pressure points.
  • Couples. The high-density foam layers within this mattress help isolate motion, making it ideal for couples. When your partner tosses and turns, you will stay comfortable.

What We Liked Best

What We Disliked

Logan & Cove is a top mattress company in Canada, with excellent products that continue to live up to their good reputation. The Logan & Cove Choice is no exception. We chose this mattress as the best option for pressure relief in Canada due to the layers of foam that align your body and reduce pressure points. We loved the luxury feel of this mattress, as well as the moderate price tag that works within many Canadians’ budgets.

The top of the Logan & Cove Choice is slightly plush. The quilted cover is sewn with cooling threads, which provide the first line of defence against overheating. Under the cover, you’ll find hollow fibre fill and cooling gel foam, which reduces temperature while promoting better comfort. This mattress does well with temperature control due to its hybrid design and well-constructed layers.

Changing position isn’t a struggle due to the responsive foam layers. You can move without sinking too far into the mattress, so you won’t feel stuck. The layer of Elastex foam in the middle of the mattress cradles your joints and helps the mattress recover from compression. Even heavy side sleepers will feel comfortable on this mattress.

The motion isolation capabilities of this mattress are amazing, especially considering the hybrid design. The pocket coils compress individually to prevent motion from transferring along them. The layers of foam help stop motion before it can reach the other side of the bed, so you’ll sleep soundly even when your partner is restless. The zoned coils at the base of the mattress provide great overall lumbar support, but they also help alleviate pressure points. The firm coils at the edges of the mattress prevent sinking and sliding when you sit or sleep there.

What We Learned

The Logan & Cove Choice offers great performance for its moderate price tag. It keeps all but the hottest sleepers cool throughout the night. Multiple layers of eco-conscious and cooling foams reduce pressure and prevent the build-up of excess body heat, providing the mattress with a comfortable but supportive surface.

We Recommend the Logan & Cove Choice for:

  • Canadians who need better pressure relief. This mattress offers some of the best pressure relief on our list. A combination of plush top layers and strong support makes this ideal for those with pressure points.
  • Users who sleep warm. This mattress is extremely breathable and uses layers of materials to reduce heat. As a result, those who usually have night sweats can sleep peacefully.
  • Those who want luxury on a budget. Though the Logan & Cove Choice has a lower price point, it offers luxury materials and a hotel feel.

What We Liked Best

What We Disliked

The Silk & Snow Organic Mattress is one of the only options in Canada to offer fully organic materials. Now, you can also get the firmness level you prefer. At checkout, you can choose between the Firm, Medium Firm, or Plush version of the mattress. Each has a slightly different construction, meaning that each firmness level feels distinct. This, along with transparently sourced materials and a commitment to quality, makes Silk & Snow Organic one of our favourite mattresses in Canada.

Each version of this mattress uses the same supportive coil base, which contains up to 1,200 pocket coils arranged in supportive zones. The coils in the centre of the mattress are firmer, while the coils on either side provide softer cushioning for your shoulders and knees. This provides excellent lumbar support no matter which option you choose. All firmness options also include a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover, which is extremely soft and breathable. Below is a universal GOTS-certified Organic wool quilted layer for extra comfort.

While each mattress includes a 0.8” layer of quilted latex for additional support and pressure relief, the middle of the mattress is where each option varies. The Firm version includes only this Dunlop latex layer. The Medium Firm version uses an additional 1.5” organic Dunlop layer, and the Plush version bumps this up to a full 3.5” of Dunlop latex.

All materials used in the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress are ethically and transparently sourced. The GOLS-certified organic latex comes from Sri Lanka, the GOTS-certified organic cotton comes from India, and the wool and coils are both sourced from Canada. Together, these materials create a unique mattress that is ideal for sleepers in all positions.

What We Learned

The Silk & Snow Organic Mattress offers solutions for sleepers in every position. The layers in each version of the mattress change, meaning they each have a distinct feel. The certified organic materials are great for those concerned with the environment, too. The construction retains more heat as it gets softer, so the Plush version may not be best for those who need a cooler mattress.

We Recommend the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress for:

  • Eco-conscious Canadians. All of the materials used in the Silk & Snow Organic mattress are eco-conscious and organic, with certified materials that help you sleep easier.
  • Users in all sleeping positions. Because you can choose your firmness level for the Silk & Snow Organic, it works well for all sleeping positions.
  • Those who need additional support. No matter how you sleep, this mattress offers a solid construction that is extremely supportive. You’ll get the same level of relief with the Plush version as with the Firm option.

What We Liked Best

What We Disliked

The Douglas Original Mattress is one of the best-selling mattresses in Canada, and we can absolutely see why. This is the company’s baseline mattress. Unlike other baseline models, this mattress offers a host of interesting features that keep it comfortable for most sleeping positions. It uses three layers of proprietary foams to keep you cool and comfortable, all wrapped in a removable, machine-washable cover.

The CoolSense cover is made with sustainable Infinitex fibres. This cover can be zipped off and washed with your sheets when it’s time to refresh your sleeping space. It also helps wick away sweat and moisture, reducing the temperature on the top of the mattress. The first layer is ecoLight cooling foam. It’s made with 40% less carbon input than standard memory foam and doesn’t sink or retain heat like memory foam does.

The middle layer is premium Elastex foam, a responsive natural latex alternative that uses fewer chemicals than standard synthetic latex. This layer mimics the support and response features of latex, but without causing allergic reactions. The core of the mattress is a slab of motion isolation support foam. This layer helps stop transfer between sides of the bed, so you won’t wake up when your partner is restless.

All materials used within the Douglas Original mattress are sustainable and made in Canada, which helps avoid unnecessary shipping charges and carbon footprint. It’s engineered to work with any sleeping position, so most Canadians will be comfortable on this mattress. Average and lightweight sleepers will get enough pressure relief from the comfort layers, but heavier Canadians may need a thicker mattress.

What We Learned

The Douglas Original Mattress improves upon every issue that most people have with memory foam mattresses. It performs well when it comes to pressure relief, with mild temperature control and great motion isolation. Bounce is low in this mattress, so those looking for a bouncy mattress might need to look elsewhere.

We Recommend the Douglas Original Mattress for:

  • Average and lightweight sleepers. Average and lightweight sleepers are unlikely to sink through the comfort layers of this mattress. Heavier sleepers may need more support and pressure relief.
  • Users who don’t like memory foam mattresses. Memory foam mattresses are notoriously hot and hard to move around on. The Douglas Original Mattress removes most of the memory foam’s inherent issues, so those who don’t like memory foam should enjoy this mattress more.
  • Canadians on a budget. The Douglas Original Mattress comes at a moderate price point, making it ideal for those who want quality on a tight budget

What We Liked Best

What We Disliked

The Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress is our top pick for the best hybrid mattresses in Canada. This mattress provides deep pressure relief and outstanding edge support. It also uses supportive coils that ensure long-term durability. With so much to offer, we were pleasantly surprised at its reasonable price tag.

This mattress doesn’t feel overly plush or soft. It’s comfortable and has a slight bounce, but you won’t have to worry about sinking into the mattress or feeling stuck. Changing positions was easy due to the quick response time, meaning the foam didn’t take long to return to its original position. You can change positions as often as you need without discomfort.

The cover is quilted right into a layer of cooling gel foam, which provides some minor cooling properties to the mattress. Paired with the breathable coils from the core of the mattress, the mattress can reduce higher body temperatures as you sleep. However, it doesn’t work too well for those who already sleep hot, as it doesn’t do enough to dissipate heat and prevent build-up.

On the other hand, the base of the mattress is extremely supportive. The coils are quiet and won’t squeak when you move around, making it ideal for couples. The motion isolation on this mattress is excellent, and you won’t wake up when your partner moves around a lot at night. We especially liked the firm edge support, which holds up remarkably well over time. While other mattresses might sink along the edges, the perimeter of this mattress is just as first as the rest of the bed.

If you prefer a softer sleeping surface, you should consider the Plush version of this mattress. It offers the same strong support with thicker comfort layers and a softer profile.

What We Learned

The Silk & Snow Hybrid offered amazing edge support and response time, making it ideal for a range of Canadian sleepers. The pressure relief was great too, so most sleepers can stay comfortable on the surface of the mattress. It has more features than we would expect from a budget hybrid, and it comes in at well below the average price for a hybrid mattress.

We Recommend the Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress for:

  • Edge Sleepers. This mattress uses a combination of firm coils and a firmer edge support foam to prevent sinking at the edges of the mattress. Those who sit or sleep here will be well-supported throughout.
  • Couples. The motion isolation on this mattress is better than some of the other hybrids we looked at. Further, the medium-firm feel, zoned coils, and moderately strong support work well for most sleeping positions, so couples with different preferences can stay comfortable.
  • Those who don’t sleep hot. Because the cooling features aren’t as powerful as we would like, this mattress is best for those who don’t have issues with sweating at night.

What We Liked Best

What We Disliked

Octave offers three different mattresses, and the Octave Vista is its base model. It features three layers of proprietary foams and cooling materials, all wrapped in an innovative cooling cover. In fact, this mattress is often named one of the most innovative cooling mattresses in Canada. Despite its affordable price, it offers some great options for those who sleep hot.

The CoolSense Cover is made with CryoFusion cooling nanofibres. It is smooth and cool to the touch, helping to channel heat away from you as you sleep. It works to stay cool throughout the night, so you never have to wake up sweaty. If that isn’t enough for you, the first layer of foam should help reduce temperatures even further.

This layer is made with CopperGel memory foam. Copper helps conduct heat away from you and acts as an antimicrobial, reducing and eliminating the growth of bacteria. Meanwhile, strips of PolarMAX phase-changing material help maintain a consistent, comfortable temperature at night. No matter how hot you get, these materials won’t heat up.

The middle of the mattress uses a layer of Elastex, which is a latex alternative that helps disperse heat. This layer adds some response to the mattress, making it easier to move around. It also helps cushion deep pressure points, so lightweight and average sleepers can reduce discomfort. Finally, the base of the mattress is an 8” layer of zoned support foam, complete with air channels to ventilate the centre of the mattress. The multi-stage cooling features within this mattress make it ideal for those who sleep hot.

What We Learned

The Octave Vista mattress might be Octave’s base model, but it features a ton of cooling features. This mattress works tirelessly to reduce higher temperatures, so you stay comfortable throughout the night. It features some surprising edge support for an all-foam mattress but offers minimal bounce and sinkage.

We Recommend the Octave Vista Mattress for:

  • Lightweight sleepers. The comfort layers on this mattress are thinner, which can lead to pressure and discomfort for heavier sleepers.
  • Those who sleep hot. Multiple cooling layers, including the CoolSense cover, Copper-infused gel foam, and phase-changing materials help reduce temperatures for those who sleep hot.
  • Canadians who sleep on the edge. For a thinner foam mattress, the Octave Vista unexpectedly features outstanding edge support.

What We Liked Best

What We Disliked

The Endy Hybrid Mattress is one of the best options in Canada for couples, especially those who have restless partners. Often, a mattress with poor motion isolation can help motion from one side of the bed transfer to the other. The result is that your partner’s tossing and turning makes your side of the bed shake, which can wake you up. The Endy Hybrid uses open-cell foams, pocket coils, and a dense layer of transition foam to reduce motion transfer throughout the mattress.

The plush quilted cover on top of the mattress is lined with foam, which already works to reduce pressure and keep you comfortable. The cover is soft to the touch, but you can’t take it off of the mattress. Some might prefer to clean their cover, but this one is fixed because of the quilted foam lining. Inside the mattress is the first layer of foam, which is Endy’s proprietary Comfort Foam. This open-cell design traps heat and helps with motion isolation, so you can stay comfortable and move around easily.

The second layer is a dense transition foam. While this layer helps with additional motion isolation, it also reduces pressure points and leads to a night of better sleep for most Canadians. This layer cushions the coils below, so average sleepers won’t feel anything but support. However, these comfort layers may not be thick enough for heavier Canadians. Keep this in mind before you purchase.

The last two layers of the mattress are the important zoned support core and a layer of stabilizing foam beneath it. The coils are zoned, with firmer coils throughout the centre of the mattress to reduce strain and keep your spine aligned. Softer coils under your shoulders and knees help reduce pressure at these key points. Finally, the coils around the outside edge are firmer for better edge support. A rare layer of stabilizing foam under the coils prevents sagging and helps the mattress retain its shape for years to come.

What We Learned

The Endy Hybrid mattress is a great choice for couples because of the great motion isolation it offers. It also performs extremely well when it comes to pressure relief. The zoned support coils help with better edge support, but it also relieves lumbar discomfort to keep you comfortable throughout the night.

We Recommend the Endy Hybrid Mattress for:

  • Couples and co-sleepers. The foam layers and pocketed coils help reduce motion transfer, so couples with restless partners can sleep more peacefully.
  • Canadians with back pain. Those who suffer from back pain will appreciate the pressure relief and zoned support from this mattress.
  • Those who need pressure relief. Thick comfort layers and supportive coils help reduce pressure, so Canadians who usually develop pressure points will stay comfortable throughout the night.

Casper Original Hybrid Mattress

Best Supportive Mattress in Canada

Buy from Casper

What We Liked Best

What We Disliked

Casper’s Original Hybrid Mattress is one of the company’s most basic models. Even so, this mattress provides some great performance in a few key areas. This is the ideal mattress for Canadians who need support, as well as those who prioritize pressure relief. The foam layers of this mattress reduce pressure and keep you cool, with zoned memory foam for those who need extra lumbar support. The coils offer great balancing and full-body alignment as well.

The cover of the Casper Original Hybrid is a cozy knit material, which is soft and smooth to the touch. It’s stretchy and breathable, so you can feel a difference even through your favourite sheets. This cover also includes a firmer border, which helps reduce sagging at the edges. This is a unique way to promote better support at the edges of the mattress, but it seems to work beautifully. The first layer of foam is Casper’s proprietary AirScape foam, which is perforated to vent out heat as you sleep.

The middle of the mattress uses a zoned layer of transition foam. This memory foam is firmer through the middle, so your hips and lumbar are well-supported. This balances your body, aligning your spine to reduce pressure and discomfort. This layer works nearly as well as zoned coils would for balancing. The bottom layer of the mattress is a layer of pocketed coils. They are not zoned, but they work to provide support everywhere you need it.

Surrounding the coils is a dense encasement of edge support foam. This section works together with the edge support section on top of the mattress to produce minimal sinking at the edges of the mattress. If you sit on the edge of the mattress in the morning, or if you naturally gravitate towards the edges in your sleep, these layers maintain support. From one side of the mattress to the other, you’ll be fully supported by the Casper Original Hybrid.

What We Learned

While the Casper Original Hybrid Mattress doesn’t perform well when it comes to motion isolation, it does a great job in nearly every other category. This mattress is great at reducing heat, providing better relief from pressure points, and being extremely responsive. Its medium-firm design makes it ideal for every sleeper, though heavier sleepers may not be comfortable due to the thin comfort layers.

We Recommend the Casper Original Hybrid Mattress for:

  • Those who move around a lot at night. The perforated foam at the top of this mattress is extremely responsive, making it easy to move around on top of the mattress. Combination sleepers and those who move around a lot should have an easy sleep on this mattress.
  • Solo sleepers. Because of the poor motion isolation of this mattress, we can’t recommend it for couples. Those who sleep alone or couples who don’t move around too much should be perfectly comfortable.
  • Edge sleepers. The superior edge support helps reduce sinking and sagging when you sit or sleep at the edge of the bed, making this mattress ideal for edge sleepers.

What We Liked Best

What We Disliked

The Emma Original uses three layers of dense memory foam and proprietary materials to keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night. It’s one of the thinnest mattresses available on the Canadian market at just 10” tall. However, this mattress is nevertheless great at relieving pressure and reducing temperatures. Even the heaviest side sleepers will stay comfortable on this mattress, which is outstanding considering its size and construction.

This mattress includes a soft, washable cover. It is made of a breathable material that helps regulate moisture and temperatures, so you don’t wake up too sweaty throughout the night. This cover zips off smoothly, allowing you to throw it into your washing machine at home with no issues. It’s simple to keep clean, so your mattress is always fresh. Inside are three layers of foam that work together to create a cooling sleeping environment.

The first layer is Emma’s proprietary Point Elastic Airgocell foam. This foam absorbs heat and evaporates moisture to combat rising temperatures, which is ideal for those who sleep hot. Thankfully, this layer is thick enough that heat won’t build up from the memory foam below. Said memory foam is in the middle of the mattress. It contours to your body to relieve pressure, align your spine, and keep pressure away.

Of course, the supportive core of the mattress also helps keep pressure away. Thanks to several collapse points, this layer of HRX (High Resiliency Extra) foam counters pressure, aligning your spine without bringing you any additional pressure. This means that pressure points are a thing of the past when you sleep on this mattress. These materials make it easy to move around on top of the mattress, though the edges of the mattress can’t maintain the same level of support.

What We Learned

The Emma Original Mattress is an all-foam option that is nevertheless extremely cool, mostly due to its proprietary cooling layers. This mattress may be thin, but it provides good pressure relief and ease of movement for sleepers of all body types in all sleeping positions. The responsiveness makes it great for those who prefer a bouncy mattress, as well as those who move around throughout the night.

We Recommend the Emma Original Mattress for:

  • Canadians who need more bounce. Canadians who prefer a bouncy mattress will love the Emma Original, which provides nice movement for those who need it.
  • Combination sleepers and active sleepers. The materials inside this mattress respond to movement extremely quickly, well above the average for other mattresses. It’s extremely easy to move around on.
  • Those who sleep extremely hot. Despite the all-foam construction of the Emma Original Mattress, it is breathable and helps reduce night sweats.

What We Liked Best

What We Disliked

When it comes to luxury, you can’t beat the Simba 5000 Pro Flex Mattress. While some mattresses claim to be luxury models, the Simba 5000 delivers on nearly every possible front. This mattress comes at a higher price point than most of the other options on our list, but that price point includes a ton of high-quality materials in a unique mattress construction.

There are six layers of foam and coils within this mattress. They all work together to provide a unique feel that you won’t find in other mattresses, no matter the price point. It starts with the cover, which is hand-knitted and hypoallergenic. This cover is removable and washable, but it breathes really well. The first layer within the mattress is made of natural wool, which wicks away heat and moisture. It also provides the mattress with a soft, comfortable feel below the cover, which is unique to this mattress.

Below the wool is a layer of graphite-infused foam. Graphite conducts heat away from you and dissipates it, which is ideal for those who sleep hot. Right below the graphite foam are two layers of Aerocoil springs. These layers use up to 5,000 conical springs to distribute weight in areas of high pressure. These coils also compress individually to stop motion from spreading, so your restless partner won’t keep you up.

Next are two layers of support foam. The first is a layer of Simba-Pure, which features Edge Lift Technology. This layer helps make support across the surface more consistent and reduces sinking and sagging as you approach the edges of the mattress. The thick base below uses seven support zones to ensure that the mattress adjusts to you. Collapse points along the base allow it to offer better support when needed, which makes this mattress extremely comfortable for sleepers of all body types.

What We Learned

The Simba Hybrid 5000 Pro Flex Mattress is a luxury mattress that reduces pressure, temperature, and motion transfer. Layers of supportive, cooling materials lead to improved sleep for all sleeping positions. If you are willing to pay a bit more, this innovative mattress may be able to help you.

We Recommend the Simba 5000 Pro Flex Mattress for:

  • Users who need additional pressure relief. The thick layers of this mattress, including the comfort layer of conical springs, help eliminate pressure points so you can wake up without discomfort.
  • Canadians with back pain. The support profile of this mattress helps relieve back pain, reducing strain on your joints and keeping you well-aligned and comfortable.
  • Those with additional cooling needs. This mattress is one of the coolest options available on the Canadian market, with layers of breathable, temperature-neutralizing foams.

Summary of the Best Mattresses in Canada

When we began searching for the best mattresses in Canada, we had to narrow down our choices considerably. We wanted to recommend only the best for you, so we had to eliminate dozens of mattresses from our review pool. To achieve this, we focused on features that Canadians prefer.

Lauren Williams looked at the construction of each mattress, as well as the materials used to create them. We looked at how the mattresses performed for all weight and age ranges, couples, and sleeping positions. Features like temperature control, motion isolation, and pressure relief were some of the most important selling points for us. With this data in mind, the mattresses on our list separated themselves from the pack.

Why Should Canadians Choose the Best Mattresses?

Several of the mattresses we reviewed for our article for the best Canadian mattresses

There are a lot of mattresses available in Canada. Some are made in Canada, while others are produced elsewhere and imported to Canadian warehouses. A good mattress should be comfortable, supportive in the long term, and be made with materials you can trust. That’s why most Canadians prefer to purchase a mattress that is made in Canada.

The mattresses on our list are not all made in Canada, but most of them are. Regardless of where they are made, the following benefits come with purchasing the best mattresses available in Canada.

  • Quality Materials. Mattresses are only as good as their materials, which is why the best mattresses in Canada offer the highest-quality materials. These mattresses may include proprietary materials, dense, open-cell foams, or strong steel coils. Either way, you know you are getting the best.
  • Temperature Control Features. Cooling mattresses can help control the build-up of heat throughout your mattress. Options with cooling gel foams, breathable coils, perforated foam, and phase-changing materials can remove excess heat and allow you to sleep more comfortably.
  • Support. Support is extremely important in a mattress, and many claim to offer support that they can’t deliver. Thankfully, the best mattresses in Canada work to provide cutting-edge materials that offer the best support for you, no matter how you sleep.
  • Sleep Trials and Warranties. The best mattresses in Canada tend to have longer sleep trials and warranties with better terms. While you should always read company policies for sleep trials and warranties, choosing options with longer periods for both is generally better.

Firmness and Sleeping Position

One of the quickest ways to determine if a mattress will feel right for you is to look at the firmness level. Mattresses can have a range of different firmness levels, but the one you prefer depends on your sleeping position and body type.

To help you narrow down your choices, we use a firmness scale. Every one of the mattresses on our list is rated from 1 (feather-soft) to 10 (rock-hard). We also use categorical descriptions (such as Firm or Medium Firm), but the numbers give you a much more specific idea of how a mattress feels.

Of course, firmness preference can rely heavily on your sleeping position. Stomach sleepers, for example, tend to prefer a softer mattress with firm support.t Side sleepers prefer medium or medium-firm mattresses, especially those that promote spinal alignment and pressure relief. Back sleepers need a firmer mattress with a plush top layer, as they can be adequately supported without being too uncomfortable.

Most of the mattresses on our list today are either medium or medium-firm when it comes to firmness. Even so, they all feel different. Medium firm mattresses, as a general rule, are ideal for side sleepers, back sleepers with an average build, or heavier stomach sleepers.

Which Performance Features Can You Find in the Best Mattresses in Canada?

Once you understand mattress basics, you can check out some of the most popular mattress performance features. These features can help you sleep better by reducing temperature, making your mattress more comfortable, or promoting better movement throughout.

Temperature Control

If you sleep hot, your mattress might be to blame. Those who sleep hot need a mattress that is more breathable and features additional cooling measures. Cooling gel foams, breathable covers, and phase-changing materials are all ideal for keeping you cool all night long.

On our list, the Octave Vista provides the best possible cooling. That’s because it uses layers of proprietary foams, including copper-infused memory foam, phase-changing PolarMAX, and a cover made with CryoFusion nanofibres.

Support

Support is the key to a comfortable mattress. A supportive mattress can ease back pain and provide better sleep, so you wake up well-rested and without aches. Support can be achieved through numerous means, including firm foam layers, hybrid coils, and zoned support.

Canadians looking for better support should consider the Casper Original Hybrid Mattress. Here, you’ll find supportive hybrid coils in the core of the mattress. A layer of zoned transition foam adds additional lumbar support to reduce back pain and discomfort.

Pressure Relief

Side sleepers often have issues with pressure points, which can form in areas where your body presses into the mattress. Foam mattresses do a great job of relieving pressure, but some are still better than others. Mattresses with thicker or denser comfort layers and strong support cores provide the best pressure relief.

The Silk & Snow Mattress is one of the best mattresses on our list for pressure relief. This option features high-density memory foam, which is more supportive and provides better cushion than standard memory foam. Pressure points are almost eliminated for average sleepers on this mattress.

Motion Isolation

If you’re tired of waking up when your partner is tossing and turning, you need a mattress with better motion isolation. Foam mattresses can absorb motion, stopping it from moving to the other side of the mattress. This means that you won’t feel any vibrations, even when your partner is restless.

The Endy Mattress is the best option on our list for motion isolation. The open-cell design of the mattress stops motions as it happens, so your partner’s movements won’t disturb you.

Ease of Movement

Some mattresses make you feel stuck. Memory foam mattresses are notorious for a sinking feeling that you can’t move out of. For those who move around a lot throughout the night, this is less than ideal. Those who move around a lot need mattresses that don’t allow you to sink in too far, as well as mattresses with a quicker response time.

If you need to move around a lot, you should choose the Emma Original Mattress. This option has a surprising amount of responsiveness, making it easy to move around on the surface.

Sleep Trials and Warranties for the Best Mattresses in Canada

Purchasing a mattress online can be challenging, especially since you can’t see the mattress in person first. While some mattresses sold online are available in brick-and-mortar locations, the majority won’t be. To combat this, online mattress retailers offer sleep trials. A sleep trial is a period where you can try the mattress out. If you don’t like it, you can return it for a full refund of your purchase print. Usually, this comes with free return shipping. In some cases, shipping may not be included.

It’s important to read the sleep trial and warranty policies from a mattress company before you decide to make a purchase. Sleep trials can range from 100 nights to 365 nights. On our list, the Douglas Original Mattress and Logan & Cove Choice mattress both have 365-night sleep trials, giving you a full year to try it before you decide to keep it.

If you do decide to keep the mattress, you’ll have a warranty. Warranties can range from 1 year to 25 years for mattresses. On our list, the Douglas Mattress is the option with the longest warranty. It covers you for a full 20 years.

Frequently asked questions about the best mattresses in Canada

All-foam mattresses are made with layers of foam, which can include memory foam, polyfoam, and latex. These mattresses usually offer better motion isolation and pressure relief, but they can retain heat. Hybrid mattresses use layers of foam and pocket coils, which can be stronger and more supportive. These mattresses are also a bit cooler than all-foam options.

A surprising number of Canadians wake up too hot and sweaty. A mattress with cooling features can remove extra heat from the mattress and prevent heat from building up throughout the night. On our list, the Octave Vista offers some of the best cooling features available. Layers of breathable foams and cooling layers reduce extreme temperatures so you don’t wake up sweating.

Motion transfer can keep you up at night, particularly if your partner is often restless. Foam mattresses provide better motion isolation than hybrid or innerspring options. The Endy Mattress is the best option on our list for those who need to isolate motion from their partners. The open-cell design and dense foam layers provide better relief than other mattresses on our list.

Those who suffer from back pain should choose a mattress that provides extra support. No matter how you sleep, better support and better spinal alignment can lead to improved outcomes for those who suffer from back pain, particularly chronic pain. Medium-firm mattresses are best for this, as they provide a balance of support and comfort. The Casper Original Hybrid Mattress offers the best support on our list due to the zoned foam and strong coil support.

You should replace your mattress when it begins to sag, becomes uncomfortable, or no longer allows you to sleep comfortably. Usually, experts recommend replacing your mattress every 7 years or so, but a high-quality mattress may last longer. No matter how much time has passed, you should replace a mattress when you no longer sleep as well.
