Why Did We Choose These Unbiased Mattresses for Canadians?

Each of the mattresses on our list was chosen after weeks of evaluation. Each mattress brings something unique to the table, making them worthy of appearing on an unbiased mattress review list. But what sets them apart? Here, we’ll look at why each mattress made our list.

The Douglas mattress is the best Canadian mattress overall. This is the mattress to choose if you’re apprehensive about all-foam mattresses, as it works to correct most of the issues associated with memory foam. It doesn’t overheat easily and the eco-conscious foam layers are easy to move around on.

The Novosbed mattress, on the other hand, provides the best options in Canada. The three base firmness options you can choose during the purchase are already impressive, but the Comfort+ topper kit allows you to fine-tune firmness to create up to 9 different unique firmnesses.

The “coolest bed in the world”, the GhostBed Luxe, features proprietary foams that provide active temperature control options. It’s the best bed in Canada for those that sleep hot, as it works to remove heat and keep you at a consistent body temperature.

The Endy mattress offers active motion isolation. The open-cell design stops motion as it happens, so it won’t transfer across the foam and affect any light sleepers on the other side of the bed. It’s best for couples and co-sleepers, as well as those who sleep with their pets or children.

The Logan & Cove Pillow-Top mattress features zoned, pocketed coils. It’s a great hybrid, and one of the best in Canada for support. The plush pillow-top section also provides comforting support.

When it comes to support, nothing can beat the all-foam Casper Original mattress. This mattress features a layer of zoned support foam with firm support under your hips and lower back, providing a more comfortable sleep for all sleepers.

Finally, the Puffy Lux mattress is the best all-foam option in Canada overall. It’s a breathable mattress that uses layers of memory foam to create a cool, supportive experience that still eliminates pressure points beautifully.

Best Overall

The Douglas Mattress

The Douglas Mattress

Features:

It's Great For:

The Douglas Mattress is our top recommendation for most Canadians. This medium-firm mattress features eco-conscious foam layers, temperature control features, and excellent motion isolation for couples. This mattress has a feature for just about everyone! It’s great for just about any sleeping position and body type, too.

The CoolSense cover is made with Tencel, a sustainable fibre that wicks away moisture. If you often overheat at night, this cover can help you stay a little more comfortable. The first layer of foam within the cover is ecoLight, a cooling gel foam that is created with 40% less carbon than standard memory foam. It’s soft and contouring like memory foam, but it’s more responsive overall.

The middle layer is made of Elastex, a non-allergenic latex alternative. It has all the properties of natural latex, but it won’t trigger latex allergies. That’s because it isn’t made with the same chemicals as standard latex. Finally, the support layer offers excellent motion isolation. This foam helps support the edges and keep the mattress from sagging.

The Douglas mattress earned the top spot on our list because of the universally appealing features it offers all Canadians. If you’re not sure if the Douglas mattress is for you, you can take advantage of the sleep trial that comes with your purchase. It’s a 120-night trial, followed by a 15-year warranty if you decide to keep it.

The Highlights

The Douglas Mattress is the best Canadian mattress overall, mostly due to the way it deals with a lot of common problems users usually have with memory foam mattresses. The medium-firm firmness offers the best option for most sleepers, as side sleepers, combination sleepers, and back sleepers may find this firmness comfortable. The superior memory foam pressure point reduction puts this mattress miles from similar innerspring mattresses. A non-allergenic latex layer makes moving around comfortable, and won’t trigger latex allergies. Finally, both foam layers on top of the support core are eco-conscious, so you can sleep a little easier.

  • Medium-firm firmness offers the best option for most sleepers
  • Superior pressure point reduction compared to innerspring options
  • The non-allergenic latex layer makes moving around comfortable and easy
  • Eco-conscious foam mattresses

From the Test Lab

“The Douglas mattress had the highest positive review rate of all the mattresses we tested. Our testers loved this mattress more than any others!”

Best Options

The Novosbed Mattress

Novosbed Mattress

Features:

It's Great For:

Novosbed’s flagship mattress features one of the most unique systems we’ve seen. The Comfort+ topper system allows you to take the original three firmness options (already more than most of the other options) and fine-tune them to your preferences. This mattress is made of next-generation open-cell memory foam, which helps with temperature control and helps reduce motion transfer overall.

The cover on the Novosbed mattress is an eco-conscious Tencel fabric, knit to be extremely soft. It helps keep you cool by wicking away moisture as you sleep. The first layer of foam, the Comfort Zone, contours to your body without overheating. This layer promotes air circulation and comfortable cushioning.

The second layer, the Transition Zone, helps to relieve deeper pressure points. It also isolates motion, ensuring you’ll stay asleep even when your partner isn’t. Finally, the Support Zone layer offers weight balancing and reliable support.

The three initial firmness options are already tuned to suit most sleepers, but the Comfort+ Kit toppers allow you to make the mattress firmer or softer according to your preference. This leads to 9 different firmness levels, each of which is distinct. The Perfect Firmness Guarantee allows you to get one of these kits if you find the initial firmness doesn’t work for you.

You can try it for yourself during the 120-night sleep trial. After the first 30 days, you can get a topper to change the firmness. When you decide to keep the mattress, you’ll have a 15-year warranty.

The Highlights

The Novosbed mattress comes in three base firmness options. These standard options (soft, medium, and firm) cover pretty much every sleeper. However, most have very specific preferences. Thankfully, Novosbed’s Comfort+ topper system allows you to fine-tune your firmness level. You can use these toppers to make your mattress firmer or softer, which means that are 9 different firmness options in total. The foam used in this mattress features dense construction with open-cell foam, which creates a comfortable, pressure-relieving surface with motion control and better cooling features. Finally, a unique and durable dual cover system protects the inner layers of foam, so it lasts longer.

  • Three initial firmness options to choose from at purchase
  • Comfort+ Kit toppers allow customization of firmness level, leading to 9 different options
  • Dense construction with open-cell foam
  • Durable dual covers protect inner layers

From the Test Lab

“The options had us testing this mattress more than any of the others. Fortunately, it was always a good fit with our testers. This mattress has widespread appeal.”

Best Temperature Control

GhostBed Luxe Mattress

GhostBed Luxe Mattress

Features:

It's Great For:

The GhostBed Luxe is one of the best mattresses for temperature control in Canada. It’s also one of the best in the world! This revolutionary mattress makes use of GhostBed’s 25 years of experience in the mattress industry to create a sleeping surface that offers active heat control. It’s cool-to-the-touch and uses phase-changing materials to create a peaceful night of sleep – especially if you sleep hot.

This mattress uses seven layers of foam and fabric to create its unique cooling feeling. The first layer is three different materials combined. The Ghost Ice fabric is the top layer, which creates the cover. It’s a plush, phase-changing material that tries to keep your body heat at a consistent temperature. When this temperature is exceeded, it starts channeling heat away. This helps you remain cool throughout the night. The other parts of this layer include a thin layer of gel memory foam and a layer of cooling fibre that promotes airflow. It’s woven right into the cover to keep you comfortable. When paired with a set of comfortable, cooling bed sheets, the first layer of this mattress is great at keeping you cool.

The core of the mattress features a layer of Ghost Ice foam, which transfers heat to the edges of the mattress. Keeping the core of the mattress cool in this way helps keep you cool, too. Underneath is a layer of gel memory foam, followed by a similar layer of Ghost Bounce. Ghost Bounce is a nice blend of memory foam and latex. It’s easy to move around on it, but it still contours to your body.

Finally, the bottom layer is a high-density support foam that helps the mattress maintain shape and support for years to come. This chilly mattress comes with a 25-year warranty. Take advantage of the 101-night sleep trial to see if it’s perfect for you.

The Highlights

The GhostBed Luxe is one of the best beds in the world for temperature control, making it ideal for those who often wake up sweaty and overheated. Where most all-foam mattresses allow heat to build up, this mattress works to actively dispel heat. The medium firmness makes it great for most sleepers, regardless of their sleeping position. The comfortable memory foam contouring offers great pressure relief, making it ideal for those who sleep on their sides. The responsive surface is also great for combination sleepers, who will find it easy to move around throughout the night.

  • Better temperature control than most foam mattresses
  • Medium firmness offers pressure relief and support for most sleepers
  • Comfortable memory foam contouring
  • Responsive surface for combination sleepers

From the Test Lab

“From unboxing to the first morning after use, this mattress stays cool to the touch. Even our warmest testers found it to be comfortable.”

Best Motion Isolation

The Endy Mattress

The Endy Mattress

Features:

It's Great For:

If you often wake up in the night because your partner is moving around, the Endy mattress is the perfect solution for you. This all-foam mattress features a medium firmness level and active motion isolation. The open-cell foam design is engineered to help stop motion from transferring at the source, so you don’t have to deal with the residual mattress movement. It’s designed to work for most sleepers, too – even if you and your partner have different preferences, this mattress can work well.

The Endy Mattress is made of a breathable open-cell foam layer, which creates a comfortable and contouring top layer. The responsive transition foam layer below keeps your deepest pressure points from becoming uncomfortable, all while working to stop motion in its tracks. The bottom layer features high-density support foam to help with support, balance, and more. The top half of the plush cover unzips for washing.

The motion isolation in this mattress works with the open-cell foam design. Each large foam cell traps motion, working to create buffers throughout the mattress. The motion is absorbed and dissipated before it reaches the other side of the bed. This mattress is also temperature neutral, meaning it retains its feel throughout the seasons.

Some memory foam mattresses feel different depending on the season. Because memory foam softens with heat, warmer months can create a softer mattress, while colder months create a firmer feel. The Endy mattress was designed to stay the same regardless of the season, so you can get a reliable firmness level no matter what.

Try the Endy mattress for 100 nights during the risk-free sleep trial. When you keep it, you’ll get a 10-year warranty. The medium firmness works for most Canadians!

The Highlights

The Endy Mattress features next-generation open-cell memory foam in each of its layers, which allows for better breathability and motion isolation overall. This mattress uses those open cells to promote active motion isolation, stopping any movement right where it happens. While most memory foam mattresses change feel based on the seasons, this mattress remains temperature-neutral. It feels the same throughout the seasons, so you can sleep well no matter what time of the year it is. The breathable foam layers expertly relieve pressure so you sleep more comfortably.

  • Next-generation open-cell memory foam construction
  • Active motion isolation features
  • Temperature-neutral for all-season use
  • Breathable foam provides outstanding pressure relief

From the Test Lab

“The active motion isolation in this mattress was amazing! Our testers reported waking up less often, even with pets, kids, and partners tossing and turning.”

Best Hybrid

The Logan & Cove Pillow-Top Mattress

The Logan and Cove Mattress

Features:

It's Great For:

Logan & Cove creates the only hybrid mattress on our list. This luxury pillow-top mattress is unique in many ways, including the separate pillow-top section, dual firmness options, and zoned, pocketed coil layer. This mattress offers some of the most consistent support we’ve seen, even over time. Layers of foam, silk, and coils promote airflow, form to your body, and provide the support you need.

The pillow-top section sits above the rest of the mattress. It recalls a more classic innerspring pillow-top design, which may be a comfort to Canadians who preferred the extra cushion it offered. The cover is a hand-tufted Tencel, which is sustainable and moisture-wicking to keep you cool. Beneath is a layer of silk-blend fill for comfort, as well as two layers of cooling gel memory foam to help keep heat regulated. The final layer inside the pillow-top section is a high-density biofoam, the first of a two-part transition layer that elevates you out of the mattress.

The bottom section of the mattress contains a thicker transition layer, which works to keep you from feeling the coils beneath. Finally, the coil layer creates the bottom of the mattress. Here, you’ll find hundreds of pocketed coils that compress individually to help with unique support. These coils are zoned, meaning they are firmer in the middle for hip and lower back support.

A layer of thick perimeter edge foam surrounds the coil layer, creating the perfect edge support you need to sit or sleep near the edge of the bed. This mattress is both soft and supportive, and the two firmness options give you some control over how you want your mattress to feel. The Logan & Cove Luxury Pillow-Top mattress comes with a 15-year warranty and a 120-night sleep trial.

The Highlights

The Logan & Cove Luxury Pillow-Top mattress is a luxury hybrid that features a separate pillow-top section. This isn’t usually found in bed-in-a-box mattresses. It offers a soft, breathable surface for those who appreciate the extra cushion. The hand-tufted cover is made with luxurious Tencel, which wicks away moisture to reduce heat throughout the night. A perimeter of edge support foam surrounds the coil layer, offering strong corner-to-corner support. There are two firmness options available (Medium Plush and Luxury Firm), allowing this mattress to appeal to every sleeper.

  • Separate pillow-top section not usually found in bed-in-a-box mattresses
  • Great edge support surrounding the coil layer
  • Hand-tufted Tencel cover that wicks moisture away
  • Two firmness options are available

From the Test Lab

“The pillow-top was so soft! It’s like sleeping on a plush, comfortable cloud. Logan & Cove has created a uniquely comfortable hybrid mattress.”

Best Support

Casper Original Mattress

Casper Original Mattress

Features:

It's Great For:

The Casper Original mattress features a few unique options that make it stand out on our list. First, it has one of the first instances of zoned foam on the Canadian mattress market. Despite forgoing the hybrid coils, this mattress provides firmer support for your waist and hips. A layer of AirScape perforated foam helps promote airflow, too. This medium mattress provides great options for those who want better support, better airflow, and a contoured feel.

The first layer of the Casper Original mattress is AirScape, a perforated foam that helps circulate air up to your body. Heat and humidity are channeled away to help you stay cool, while the foam itself helps contour to your shape, reducing pressure points. The middle layer, however, is where the magic happens.

The Zoned Support foam here includes three different ergonomic zones to intuitively support your body. The middle of the mattress (where your hips, back, and waist will rest) includes a firmer foam to help support these critical areas. At the same time, soft foam under the shoulders helps reduce pressure points and sleep more comfortably all around. Both layers are supported with a dense layer of support foam to prevent sagging.

The Casper Original mattress offers some of the best support we found in an all-foam mattress. Here, you’ll get all the support you need to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on whatever the day throws at you. Try it for 100 nights for the sleep trial, and get a 10-year limited warranty when you keep it.

The Highlights

The Casper Original Mattress uses zoned support foam to keep you comfortable and well-supported throughout the night. A more supportive, firm foam under your lower back and hips keeps your spine aligned and supports your hips. Meanwhile, softer foam around your knees and shoulders relieves pressure, so pressure points won’t form even if you sleep in the same position all night. AirScape perforated foam on the top layer moves heat and humidity down through the mattress and away from you, promoting airflow and increasing temperature control. A durable base foam layer effectively balances your body, leading to a more restful sleep overall.

  • Zoned support foam offers ideal spine alignment and hip support
  • The softer foam keeps your shoulders supported to relieve pressure
  • AirScape perforated foams increase airflow
  • A durable base foam layer offers balanced support

From the Test Lab

“The support foam layer really makes all the difference here. Our side-sleeping testers loved the way this mattress felt.”

Best All Foam

Puffy Lux Mattress

Puffy Lux Mattress

Features:

It's Great For:

Puffy Lux is a hypoallergenic all-foam mattress made exclusively for Canadians. Its lifetime warranty is the longest on our list and means that you can sleep a little easier knowing that you’re covered. This mattress has universal appeal as well: it works on any surface and for any sleeper. This foam mattress is engineered to provide exactly the support you need, so be prepared to sleep better than you ever have before.

It features four foam layers, including a hypoallergenic and stain-resistant cover. The breathable foams include cooling gel foam, a soft, pressure-relief foam, a climate control foam that helps you stay cool, and a firm support base.

This mattress also features better pressure relief than we’ve seen in other mattresses. It uses body-adapting foam to reduce strain on your deepest pressure points, creating a comfortable surface for side sleepers (and every other position, too). The entire mattress is cooling, which can help you maintain the temperature you need to sleep peacefully.

The Puffy Lux is a simple mattress, but it provides complicated relief for temperature and motion isolation. You can try it for 101 nights for a sleep trial, or take advantage of the amazing Lifetime warranty.

The Highlights

Puffy Lux was built for all sleepers. No matter how you sleep (or what your body type is), you can enjoy this medium mattress. The multiple foam layers create better overall pressure relief than most of the mattresses we looked at, even the other all-foam options. The entire bed is extremely breathable, which promotes airflow and helps to keep you cool, especially if you don’t often overheat at night. This mattress has the longest warranty on our list. Puffy supports the Puffy Lux for as long as you own it, so you can be confident in this mattress.

  • Built for all sleepers, regardless of sleeping position or body type
  • Foam layers create better pressure relief than most
  • Completely breathable construction promotes airflow
  • A lifetime warranty supports you for as long as you own the mattress

From the Test Lab

“This mattress provides true universal appeal. Most testers appreciated how it felt, regardless of body type or how they slept.”

Why Trust Us?

To arrive at the recommendations on our list, our dedicated team of testers, reviewers, and sleep experts worked together to evaluate hundreds of mattresses. We looked at construction, feel, performance, and how the mattress worked for different sleeping positions and body types. The recommendations we made will work for most Canadians. When evaluating mattresses, we used the following performance parameters.

  • Temperature Control: A large portion of Canadians generate heat as they sleep. Memory foam can allow this heat to build up because of how it reacts to body heat. For those who are already warm, this creates a huge problem. Mattresses that include active temperature control issues can get around this issue and be more comfortable for most sleepers.
  • Edge Support: Sliding off the mattress first thing in the morning can be a terrible start to your day. Mattresses with edge support eliminate these issues, allowing you to sit or sleep near the edge comfortably. You’ll have the same level of support at the edges as you have throughout the mattress.
  • Motion Control: Most Canadians sleep with a partner, child, or pet. For these sleepers, motion control is extremely important. We used the good old ‘glass of water’ test to see how well each mattress isolated different types of motion.
  • Pressure Point Relief: Memory foam is known for relieving pressure. For some sleepers, pressure relief is key to a good night’s sleep. We used pressure maps and compared notes with each of our testers to determine how well each mattress relieved pressure.

The Unbiased Way to Choose a Mattress in Canada

Choosing a mattress isn’t easy. There are a lot of things to keep in mind before you make a purchase. Here, we’ll look at the types of decisions you could face and how to navigate mattress terminology online.

Type of Mattress

As you shop for mattresses, you might notice that there are a few different types to choose between. Each type of mattress has different benefits and drawbacks, so you should choose based on what you want out of your mattress.

  • An all-foam mattress exclusively uses layers of memory foam, latex, and polyfoam to create a supportive, contouring mattress. Each layer of foam may have different properties, allowing each all-foam mattress to have a unique feel.
    • Memory foam contours to your body. It softens when it warms up, so your body heat creates a personalized pressure map for your mattress to follow. However, it can allow heat to build up, creating an uncomfortably warm sleep. It also has a ‘quicksand’, stuck-in-the-mattress feeling sometimes.
    • Latex is a responsive foam that still contours to your body. While it doesn’t form to your body like memory foam, it still sinks in areas where you’re heaviest, creating comfortable support where it’s most necessary. Some people are allergic to latex, though.
    • Polyfoam is a dense, supportive foundation for the rest of your mattress. Polyfoam is only used as a support layer in foam mattresses.
  • Innerspring mattresses use layers of coils to create the support you need. These coils and springs are connected and covered with fill to create a more comfortable sleeping surface. Most mattresses purchased online are not innerspring, as they are more difficult to compress.
  • A hybrid mattress combines the best of a foam mattress with the support of an innerspring. They isolate motion better than innerspring mattresses, and often offer more support than memory foam mattresses.

Firmness

Firmness is a measure of how supportive a mattress can be. Firmness is a personal preference, though there are some general recommendations based on sleeping position and body type. We’ll talk about those next.

Starting with the softest option, here are the firmness options you might encounter.

  • Soft
  • Medium-Soft
  • Medium
  • Medium-Firm
  • Firm

Sleeping Position and Body Type

Your sleeping position and body type have a lot to do with the firmness you prefer. However, these are general guidelines. You may have different preferences, and that’s fine! However, this chart may help you determine where to start looking if you aren’t sure.

FirmnessSleeping PositionBody Type
Soft – Medium-SoftStomachUp to 59kg
MediumSide59kg to 104kg
Medium-Firm – FirmStomach, Combination104kg and Up

Size

Most Canadians know which mattress size they want. However, you might want to look into other options as you upgrade your mattress. There are six mattresses sizes for most mattresses.

Mattress SizeDimensionsRecommended Sleepers
Twin96.5cm x 189cm1
Twin XL96.5cm x 202cm1
Full/Double134.5cm x 189cm1-2
Queen152.5cm x 202cm2
King193cm x 202cm2-3
California King183cm x 213.5cm2-3

You should choose the mattress that best fits your sleeping situation. Make sure that you have a foundation in the same size to support your new mattress.

A seventh common mattress size, Split King, is available at some mattress retailers. Split King size includes two Twin XL mattresses that can be attached. Split King is meant for couples who use an adjustable frame.

Purchasing a Mattress Online in Canada

Buying a mattress online is simple. Though it may seem overwhelming at first, it can offer more benefits than purchasing a mattress in a physical retail store. There are often sales or promotional offers to take advantage of, and those are calculated on top of deep discounts. Online mattresses are less costly on average because of lower overheads. Mattresses ship right to your door and include longer sleep trials than other stores.

Here are some of the ins and outs of purchasing a mattress online.

Sleep Trials

Sleep trials give you a period to test your new mattress. During this period (usually between 60 and 120 nights), you can determine if you want to keep the mattress. If it’s not for you, now is the time to find out.

Most retailers require that you keep the mattress for at least 30 days before returning it. This is how long it usually takes for your body to adjust to a new mattress. This gives you enough time to see if the mattress is perfect for you before deciding to return it.

Returns

During the sleep trial (and after the initial required period), you might decide that your online mattress isn’t going to work for you. If so, you can initiate a return with the mattress company. Returns are free, and you’ll get your full purchase price returned to you if you return during your trial period. Most companies donate used mattresses to local charities, so you can return your mattress without feeling guilty.

Warranties

A warranty guarantees that the mattress is free from manufacturing defects. Usually, warranties last between 10 and 25 years, depending on the retailer. In most cases, this is how long the company expects the mattress to last.

Warranty terms differ depending on the company, so do the proper research before committing to a purchase. Most protect against major defects, undue sagging, tearing, and deeper dipping.

Unboxing Procedures

Unboxing your mattress is simple, too. Once you receive your mattress, remove it from the box. Place it on the foundation you’ve set up for it. Carefully cut the plastic wrap surrounding the mattress, which will allow it to expand to its intended size and shape.

The restoration process usually takes about 48 hours. During this time, you shouldn’t sleep on your new mattress.

Off-Gassing

Off-gassing is a natural part of the mattress unboxing process, especially after the mattress has been vacuum-packed and restored. Sometimes, the memory foam manufacturing process will leave a lingering chemical odour. This is harmless.

Still, if you find that the odour is bothering you, you should ventilate the room and use a fan to move the fumes away. After 24 to 48 hours, most of the smell should be gone.

Performance Features

As mentioned above, we look at several performance features as we evaluate the mattresses we recommend to you. Here’s a deeper look at these performance features. Keep these in mind as you shop for a mattress.

Motion Control

If your partner is often restless (or if you’re a light sleeper), you’ll want a mattress that features motion control or motion isolation features. Foam mattresses are best at isolating motion, and hybrid mattresses provide better isolation than traditional innerspring mattresses, too. Look for mattresses that use motion isolation support foam, a soft but robust transition layer, or pocketed springs.

Temperature Control

Even though memory foam mattresses are known for being hot, there are some temperature control features you can look for. Usually, mattresses that control temperature use gel memory foam layers. Other temperature control features you might find include perforated foam, copper infusions, latex layers, and pocketed coils with increased airflow. Certain covers might help too, including those that boast cooling properties.

Edge Support

Edge support can be important for some sleepers. Some partners sleep near the edge of the bed on a smaller mattress. Some Canadians might want to sit on the edge of the bed to put their slippers on in the morning. Some mattresses lack support at the edge, so you might feel like you’ll slide right off.

Look for mattresses with reinforced edges, perimeter foam, and stronger coils around the edges of the mattress. Edge-to-edge support is a great feature to look for regardless, so keep it in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Simply put, yes. Buying a Canadian mattress online allows you to pay less and try the mattress for longer before making a decision. The mattress is delivered right to your door, too – you won’t have to borrow a friend’s truck to bring your new mattress home.

Most experts agree that you should replace your mattress every 6 to 8 years. However, this depends on how well your mattress holds up. Some memory foam mattresses can last more than 10 years.

Some mattresses can be flipped, but the mattresses on our list shouldn’t be flipped at all. All-foam mattresses are stacked in a way that makes them most effective. Sleeping on the bottom of the mattress can be uncomfortable. Hybrid mattresses, too, are stacked to provide the best sleeping experience at the top. Instead, you should rotate your mattress every 3 months or so.
