Considerations:

The Silk & Snow Mattress is Silk & Snow’s first mattress, a flagship model that helped the company become one of Canada’s favourite sleep companies. This mattress uses a familiar construction, but the effect is different because of the higher-quality materials used here. Instead of using standard memory foam, this mattress uses high-density, open-cell memory foam. The result is a distinctly different mattress. This mattress is a little softer than some of Silk & Snow’s other mattresses, too. The medium firmness is ideal for side sleepers and stomach sleepers, but some heavier sleepers might find that this mattress doesn’t offer a firm enough feel for them.

This mattress is relatively short. It uses three layers of foam to create a comfortable feel. A gel memory foam at the top of the mattress provides pressure relief and mild cooling features, while a middle transition layer of support foam helps keep you elevated and balanced across the mattress. The durable support base reduces pressure and stops motion as it happens, working together with the transitional layer to provide deeper relief.

Like all of Silk & Snow’s products, this mattress uses materials that are transparently sourced. The company outlines the entire sourcing and production process on the Silk & Snow mattress page, which allows you to see how the products are made. With that level of transparency, you can rest a little easier.

Mattress Construction

Silk & Snow Mattress Construction

The Silk & Snow mattress uses high-density memory foam in a familiar construction. This mattress provides a luxurious experience with just a few key changes from the standard all-foam mattress formula.

  1. Antimicrobial Cover. The cover is made with an antimicrobial textile that prevents the growth of bacteria. The result is a cover that is soft, comfortable, and doesn’t harbor odours caused by bacteria.
  2. Gel Memory Foam. The first layer of the mattress uses high-density memory foam to produce better pressure relief overall. This layer offers better support and promotes cooling. This open-cell foam is infused with gel to absorb heat and keep you comfortable throughout the night.
  3. Transitional Performance Foam. A layer of soft transitional performance foam offers better support and motion isolation than other mattresses might. This layer helps absorb motion and keeps you balanced, aligning your spine for a more comfortable sleep.
  4. Support Layer. The support layer is made with high-quality, dense foam to prevent sagging and protect the structural integrity of the mattress. This layer also helps with alignment and balance, ensuring that you are properly supported throughout the night.
  5. Easy to Remove Cover. The antimicrobial cover zips off without any issues. The zipper glides smoothly without snagging, making it simple to take it off for laundry day.

Firmness

5 on Firmness Scale

The Silk & Snow mattress is a true medium. It’s not too soft, not too firm – allowing for better pressure relief and a more comfortable feel. This firmness is ideal for side and stomach sleepers because of the plush, pressure-relieving surface it often creates. The support layer and high-density memory foam also create enough support for these sleepers.

These layers help keep you aligned, so your spine and neck are in a neutral position throughout the night. The result is a more comfortable sleep that won’t have you waking up tired and uncomfortable.

A medium firmness usually isn’t ideal for back sleepers or combination sleepers due to the softer nature of the surface. Heavier sleepers might want to try the mattress before making a final purchase. On the other hand, stomach sleepers and side sleepers will love the way this mattress feels. If your personal preference tends toward softer, more comfortable mattresses, this could be the option for you.

Motion Isolation

Does your partner wake you up often? Some mattresses provide a little too much motion transfer, so your partner’s movements on their side of the bed create ripples that wake you up. Thankfully, all foam mattresses have much less motion transfer than innerspring mattresses or even hybrid options.

The Silk & Snow mattress specifically uses high-density foam layers and soft transitional foams to stop motion as it happens, reducing how much you feel from the other side of the bed. If you’re tired of waking up each time your partner turns over or gets out of bed, this mattress can be a great choice.

Pressure Relief

Silk & Snow Mattress Pressure Relief

The layers of memory foam used in the Silk & Snow Mattress provide great pressure relief. Even your deepest pressure points will be soothed with the layers in this mattress. The soft transitional foam will keep you balanced and elevated out of the mattress, reducing uncomfortable spots and keeping you comfortable. Even if you sleep in one position all night (without moving), you still won’t experience any pressure points when you wake up.

Between the cooling high-density gel foam and soft transitional layer, you’ll be sleeping on a soft, pressure-free surface. Even though it uses these materials, the mattress doesn’t lack support. You’ll still be comfortably supported all night long.

Temperature Control

This is a memory foam mattress, which means it will retain some heat. Silk & Snow uses open-cell memory foam to create breathability, reducing the temperature a little as you sleep. The top layer of gel cooling foam helps move heat away from you as you sleep, taking the edge off of those higher temperatures. Though these measures help a lot, they might not work for those who sleep extremely hot.

Edge Support

The Silk & Snow mattress doesn’t provide any additional edge support. The edges of the mattress will sink when you sit there, but you usually won’t feel like you’re sliding off. Without any additional edge support measures, this mattress still manages to have moderate edge support.

Some mattresses, especially all-foam options, tend to collapse at the edges. This means that you’re likely to feel unbalanced or uncomfortable while sleeping or sitting near the edge. Thankfully, the Silk & Snow mattress has some natural edge support that prevents some of the worst issues with edge support.

Ease of Movement

Silk & Snow Ease of Movement

Because of the way the Silk & Snow mattress cradles your body, it seems like it would be difficult to move around on the surface of the mattress. However, the high-density memory foam reduces common problems, such as the ‘quicksand’ feeling that is usually associated with memory foam. You’ll get the same contouring effect from the foam, but it’s more responsive and supportive than standard memory foam.

While there is still some contouring, it’s far easier to move around on this mattress than on most standard memory foam options.

Pricing

When it comes to price, the Silk & Snow Mattress runs in the middle of the road. It provides great value for the price, with pressure-relieving layers and premium support foam for balancing and alignment. The high-density materials used to create this mattress make it a tempting option for these budget-friendly prices.
