It's Great For:

Considerations:

The Silk & Snow Canadian Down Duvet is a genuine down duvet made with 100% Hutterite duck down. The down is sustainably gathered from an ethical farm in Alberta, which means that your insulating duvet doesn’t come at the cost of animal welfare. Like all Silk & Snow products, every part of this duvet is traceable, so you can find the transparent source of every material used to create it. A cotton shell and square baffle-box construction help to keep the duvet comfortable and distribute the fill evenly.

This duvet comes in two weight options. Both the All Season and Lightweight options come in three available sizes. Both have a fill power of around 700, but each size and option has a different overall weight. This means that the fill stays strong and comfortable throughout each size. The Lightweight version is great for those who sleep a little warm, but the extremely insulating properties of natural down make it warm and cozy regardless.

This down duvet is best used with a duvet cover. The construction ensures that fill doesn’t leak or poke out through the seams, but a duvet cover can help protect your duvet and extend its life. To help with using a duvet cover, you can use the built-in corner loops to limit the movement of the insert during use.

It's Great For:

Considerations:

The Silk & Snow Down Alternative Duvet provides a cozy, comfortable escape without the use of real down. Though Silk & Snow’s down is ethically gathered, many Canadians still feel uncomfortable using down products. If this sounds like you, the Silk & Snow Down Alternative Duvet might be the perfect option. It’s great for those with allergies and offers better temperature control for those who overheat easily throughout the night.

This duvet uses a comfortable microfibre fill to mimic the feel and comfort of real down. You’ll get the same type of fluffy loft as you would expect from a down duvet without animal products. As a result, this duvet is washable right at home with minimal limitations for care. You can keep your sleeping space clean and comfortable without any of the hassles that come with a down duvet.

This option comes in three weights. Each feels distinct. There is a Lightweight option for those who sleep hot, an All Season version, and a Winter duvet that is warm and comfortable. You can choose the size and weight that works best for your bedroom. That’s especially helpful for those who need a little extra temperature control throughout the night.

Duvet Construction

Silk & Snow Duvet Construction

Construction is an important part of duvet quality. That’s becuase the fill, whether it’s a down or a down alternative option, tends to move around a lot during use. If your duvet is not properly constructed, the fill can pool and bunch, creating areas with no fill and those that are crammed full.

To avoid this, both the Silk & Snow Canadian Down Duvet and the Silk & Snow Down Alternative Duvet use baffle box construction. Fill is separated using smaller ‘pockets’ throughout the duvet, creating a quilted design that doesn’t allow the fill to shift around over time.

The Down Duvet uses larger baffle boxes to contain its fill, as down doesn’t shift around as much as other options. However, the Down Alternative Duvet uses smaller square baffle boxes to contain the fill to a smaller space. With either option, the fill is unlikely to move around, bunch, or clump.

Fill Type

The fill type is what sets these duvets apart from each other.

The Silk & Snow Canadian Down Duvet uses 100% Canadian duck down fill. This fill provides excellent insulation and higher fill power than some of the other duvets on the Canadian market. It’s cozy and keeps you warm all night long, even on the coldest of winter nights. Temperature control might be an issue for this duvet, but it offers a lightweight option that is suitable for those who sleep hot.

On the other hand, the Silk & Snow Down Alternative Duvet uses a down-like microfibre fill. This fill is comfortable and a little more breathable than genuine down. There are three fill options to choose from, including Lightweight, All Season, and Winter. Each has a different GSM, which measures thickness.

You should choose genuine down if you want a warmer, fluffier duvet. The down is ethically sourced and sustainably gathered from a farm in Alberta. However, if you have allergies or need a more breathable duvet, the Down Alternative Duvet might be a better option.

Shell Materials

The shell is the part of your duvet that you will be interacting with most of the time. It’s important to look for a soft, breathable shell to ensure maximum duvet comfort.

Both Silk & Snow’s duvets use a 100% cotton shell. This shell is soft and moderately breathable, but it can also help trap heat to keep you cozy and warm. Despite the relative durability of the cotton shell, you should use a duvet cover with your duvet to help extend its life and keep it clean.

Weight Options

Silk & Snow Duvet Weight

The weight of a duvet determines when it’s best to use it. There are a few different options for each of Silk & Snow’s duvets. Weight refers to how thick the duvet is, but it also refers to the physical weight of the duvet. A higher weight means that the duvet is thicker because it contains more fill than other options.

The Silk & Snow Canadian Down Duvet is available in these two weights:

  • All Season (17 oz to 30 oz)
  • Lightweight (12 oz to 22 oz)

The actual weight of the duvet varies based on the size when it comes to this duvet.

The Silk & Snow Down Alternative Duvet, on the other hand, measures weight by GSM. GSM is ‘grams per square metre’, and refers to the thickness of the duvet. A higher GSM creates a thicker duvet. While the weight for the Silk & Snow Down Duvet varies by size, the GSM of each Down Alternative Duvet is the same throughout all available size options.

  • Lightweight (175 GSM)
  • All Season (375 GSM)
  • Winter (500 GSM)

There is a range of weights available for each sleeper depending on preferences and ambient sleeping temperature.

Sizes

The Silk & Snow Canadian Down Duvet and the Silk & Snow Down Alternative Duvet are available in the same three size options. These include:

  • Twin/Twin XL
  • Full/Queen
  • King/California King

You should choose the size option that best fits your bed. However, you can choose a larger size option if you want the duvet to hang over the sides of your mattress. For example, using a King-sized duvet on a Queen-sized mattress allows for significant overhang on each side of the bed.

Temperature Control

Both duvets featured here have lightweight options that help reduce heat build-up throughout the night. However, this is only really useful if you don’t want a heavier duvet. The winter and all-season options are warmer, especially when it comes to the Silk & Snow Canadian Down Duvet. Natural down is incredibly insulating, meaning that you’ll get more heat building up as you sleep. It’s cozy but warm, perfect for winter. Neither option is ideal for those who sleep hot.

Those who sleep hot or tend to overheat should choose lightweight duvets. No matter which you choose, the lightweight option will be better for those who sleep hot.

The shell of each comforter is made with 100% cotton, which is soft and can be breathable depending on the weave. A great way to reduce heat with these duvets is to use the lightweight option with cooling sheets and a lightweight, breathable duvet cover. Choosing a cooler mattress can also help you beat the heat.

Duvet Covers

You should always use a duvet cover with your Silk & Snow duvets. A duvet cover can help reduce wear and tear, extending the life of your duvet. A duvet cover is also easily removable, so it’s easier to wash. Most duvets can complicated care instructions and may need professional cleaning, so using a duvet cover can help reduce the number of times you need to wash your duvet.

Each of the Silk & Snow duvets featured here has duvet loops on the corners. This makes it easy to attach the duvet to the inside of a duvet cover. During use, your duvet is less likely to slip around inside the cover as a result.

Covers can add cooling properties, change the texture of your duvet, and more. There are plenty of duvet covers on the Canadian market (including some made by Silk & Snow specifically for use with their duvets). Make sure to match the size of your duvet cover to the size of your duvet using the dimensions provided.
