Considerations:

The Douglas Original Mattress is an award-winning mattress that is both budget-friendly and high quality. With moderate temperature control, pressure relief and motion isolation, this is a great all-around mattress that is perfect for most Canadians.

The cover of the Douglas Original is made from a breathable fabric infused with Infinitex fibres. This cooling cover will help those who sleep moderately warm stay cool throughout the night and can be zipped off and machine washed for ease of care. A layer of 2” EcoLight cooling gel memory foam lays under the cover, further reducing body heat and providing a cushioning sleep surface.

The middle of the Douglas Original features a 2” layer of Elastex foam, which mimics latex in feel and responsiveness. Those needing pressure relief will find that this layer helps with moderate support for achy joints. At the base of the mattress is a layer of 6” motion isolation foam, ideal for those who co-sleep and wish for motion transfer to be limited.

This durable and solid all-foam mattress is great for all Canadians on a budget who are seeking optimal support and temperature control.

Considerations:

As Douglas’ middle of the line mattress, the Alpine has better cooling and pressure relief features than the Original model and has a moderate price point that will appeal to most Canadians.

Those who sleep moderately warm will appreciate the cover of the Douglas Alpine, which features their proprietary Infinitex fibre cover. This cover does a great job of wicking away heat and moisture while keeping air circulating and cool. The top layer of 2.25” gel-infused memory foam is enhanced with Polar Temperature Balancing technology, which further lowers core temperatures and keeps the mattress temperature neutral night after night.

Canadians needing pressure relief will find support and comfort with the layer of 2.25” thick Elastex Foam, which feels and acts like natural latex. This layer is responsive to joints and pressure points, allowing side sleepers to be exceptionally comfortable and those who suffer from aches and pains to get relief.

The bottom layer of 6.5” motion isolation foam is ideal for all co-sleepers or those with active pets, as motion is stopped before it can be transferred, ensuring restful sleep. The base of the Douglas Alpine is solid and durable and will last for years to come.

Considerations:

As the highest quality mattress in their collection, the Douglas Summit is an excellent option for any type of sleeper. This mattress features superior cooling, deeper pressure relief and fantastic motion isolation for co-sleepers. While it is the highest price point of the three in our review today, the cost is still much less than many other mattresses on the market.

The cover of the Douglas Summit features cooling Infinitex fibres that are paired with unique CryoFusion cooling nanofibres, ensuring that even the hottest of sleepers will stay sweat-free and comfortable throughout the night. Like the other Douglas mattress covers, this one is also machine washable. The top layer of 2.5” cooling gel foam works hard to cool sleepers further and is enhanced with Douglas Polar Temperature Balancing technology. Those seeking an airy, breathable mattress will find this top layer and cover appealing.

In the middle of the Douglas Summit is a layer of 2.5 ” thick Elastex foam, which provides excellent pressure relief for those needing support for achy joints. Side sleepers will find their hips and shoulders gently cushioned without sinking into the mattress. The foundation layer is made of 7” of motion isolation foam and is ideal for couples and co-sleepers looking to minimize disruption from restless partners.

The Douglas Summit is a great choice for Canadians seeking luxury features at a moderate budget that will last longer than many other mattresses available in Canada.

Mattress Construction

Each of the three Douglas mattresses looks similar in construction but varies quite a bit. While each of them has a washable cover and three foam layers, the materials used change the quality of each Douglas mattress. Let’s see how each of the Douglas mattresses is constructed.

Douglas Original Mattress

Douglas Mattress Construction
  1. CoolSense Cover. This cover is made from sustainable Infinitex fibres, which actively cool and wick away heat and moisture. For those with allergies or the occasional spill, the cover can be zipped off and machine-washed.
  2. EcoLight Gel Foam. This 2” layer of gel-infused memory foam is made with 40% less carbon input than traditional memory foam, is responsive, cooling and won’t have you feeling stuck in your mattress.
  3. Elastex Foam Layer. Mimicking natural latex, this 2” foam layer is great for those needing moderate pressure relief for achy joints and pressure points.
  4. Motion Isolation Support Base. The foundation of this mattress is made from 6” of thick foam and works hard to prevent motion transfer between restless partners from edge to edge.

Douglas Alpine Mattress

Douglas Alpine Mattress Construction
  1. CoolSense Cover. Inspired by the mountains of Western Canada, this cover wicks away heat and moisture night after night using Infinitex fibres. The cover is machine washable and perfect for those seeking an ultra-clean bed.
  2. EcoLight + Polar Temperature Foam. This 2.25” layer of memory foam is infused with cooling gel and enhanced with Douglas Polar Temperature Balancing Technology. For those who sleep hot, this layer does a great job of reducing temperatures no matter how warm you keep your bedroom.
  3. Elastex Foam Layer. Made of 2.25” foam, this layer mimics natural latex and does a wonderful job of providing pressure relief for joints, as well as cushioning hips and shoulders for those who sleep on their side and back.
  4. Motion Isolation Support Base. At the bottom of the Douglas Alpine sits a layer of 6.5” memory foam that is a perfect foundation for years to come. Those who co-sleep will find this base helps reduce motion transfer between even the most restless partners or pets.

Douglas Summit Mattress

Douglas Summit Mattress Construction
  1. CoolSense + CryoFusion Cover. This cover is made from Infinitex threads that are infused with CryoFusion Cooling nanofibres, cooling even the hottest sleepers or those living in extra-warm climates.
  2. EcoLight + Polar Temperature Gel Foam. Made of 2.5” of gel-infused memory foam, this layer is enhanced with Polar Temperature Balancing, ensuring low, neutral temperatures night after night.
  3. Elastex Foam Layer. Mimicking natural latex, this 2.5” Elastex foam layer is supportive, responsive and excellent at providing deep pressure relief for Canadians who suffer from back pain or achy joints or are side sleepers.
  4. Motion Isolation Support Base. The base of the Douglas Summit is made from 7” of thick, durable motion isolation foam. Canadians who co-sleep will appreciate undisturbed sleep with this supportive layer.

Firmness

6.5 on Firmness Scale

Most sleep experts recommend a mattress firmness between a 6 and an 8 for most sleepers to be comfortable, and all of the mattresses in our comparison today fit that specification. The Douglas Original, Alpine and Summit all rank at a 6.5 on the firmness scale, which is classified as medium firm.

Canadians will find that all three Douglas mattresses in our review are comfortable, with a slight bounce and give, yet won’t find themselves sinking into the mattress. Those needing support will find that the firmness of these mattresses is ideal, with joints being cushioned without being too soft or firm.

These mattresses are great for side sleepers, and the Douglas Summit Mattress can be a great option for heavier sleepers as well.

Motion Isolation

Whether you co-sleep with a restless partner, or have active pets that share a bed with you, choosing a mattress with good motion isolation may be essential in getting a good night’s sleep. All of the Douglas mattresses we are featuring today have varying degrees of motion isolation.

Each Douglas mattress has a base of extra dense, supportive foam perfect for limiting motion transfer between those who co-sleep. The Douglas Original Mattress features a 6” base, the Alpine has a 6.5” base, and the Summit has a 7” base layer. The thicker the layer of motion isolation foam, the better the support will be, so for those seeking superior motion isolation, the Douglas Summit is a clear winner.

Pressure Relief

Douglas Mattress Pressure Relief

Canadians who suffer from achy joints, painful pressure points or who sleep on their side and back may want to choose a mattress that offers excellent pressure relief. All three of the Douglas mattresses in our review today have wonderful support and relief, with very little difference between the models.

In the middle of the Douglas mattresses is a layer of Elastex Foam, which mimics latex in its comfort, support and cushioning of joints. This layer ranges from 2” to 2.5” between the three different models, giving the Douglas Summit a slight advantage over the Douglas Original. No matter which option you choose, these mattresses do a great job of relieving pressure points for all sleeping positions.

Temperature Control

For many Canadians, temperature control can be a deciding factor in which mattress to buy. For those who sleep hot, live in a warm climate or like to keep their bedroom ambient temperature high, choosing a mattress with excellent cooling properties is essential. While many all-foam mattresses retain heat, Douglas uses proprietary fabric and technologies to ensure sleepers stay cool night after night.

For Canadians who sleep minimally warm, the Douglas Original Mattress is a great choice, with its Infinitex fibre cover and its layer of cooling gel foam. For those needing additional cooling, the Douglas Alpine will further reduce temperatures with its breathable Infinitex cover as well as a layer of enhanced gel foam that has added Polar Temperature Balancing.

Extra hot sleepers will find that the Douglas Summit is the best option, with its unique CryoFusion nanofibres and Polar Temperature Balancing. This mattress ensures you will never wake up hot and sweaty, no matter how warm you sleep.

Edge Support

Douglas Mattress Edge Support

Canadians who sleep on the edge of the bed may find that their mattress will start to sink or sag along the perimeter over time. Many all-foam mattresses have this problem unless they have a built-in edge support system.

All three Douglas mattresses we are comparing today feature three foam layers encased in an airy cover and do not feature specific edge support. This can mean that over many years, the edge will slightly start to sag if that is where you repeatedly sleep. For edge sleepers concerned about this, the Douglas Summit will hold up better than the other two Douglas mattresses, as the layers are thicker and more solidly constructed.

Ease of Movement

The Douglas Alpine Mattress in Bedroom

Finding a mattress with good ease of movement can be an important factor when choosing a new mattress, especially if you are a light sleeper or frequently get in and out of bed at night. Light, active sleepers will want to choose a mattress that won’t have you sinking into its layers.

All three of the Douglas mattresses in our review today feature a flat, medium-firm sleeping surface that will allow you to easily switch positions throughout the night without the feeling of being stuck in your mattress. None of them are extra plush, and those needing mobility ease will find that the Douglas Original, Alpine and Summit mattresses all do a great job of allowing you to move about freely.

Shipping

Douglas mattresses ship free to most locations across Canada. There is a $250 shipping fee to some remote locations, which will be added to your cart at checkout. If you are unsure if you will have to pay the fee, you can contact customer service. Otherwise, you can check shipping costs fairly easily on your cart page. Shipping can take 1 to 5 business days, and delivery will be soon after. You don’t have to be home to accept your mattress delivery.

All the Douglas mattresses come vacuum-sealed in a tall, thin, heavy box. You do not need to be home to receive your new Douglas mattress. Douglas does not offer removal services of an old mattress or set up of a new mattress.

Sleep Trial and Returns

Buying a mattress online usually means that you have not had a chance to test the mattress out in person. Anytime you make a large online purchase, it’s important to ensure that it has a good return policy in place, and a mattress purchase is no exception.

All Douglas mattresses include a lengthy 365-night sleep trial to make sure you are fully comfortable and happy with the mattress. If you find your new Douglas mattress is not the right fit for you, Douglas will happily take it back after an initial 30-day break-in period. Douglas will arrange for a free pickup of the mattress, and they will then donate it to a local charity. After this process, you can expect a refund back to your original payment within one week.

Warranty

Douglas includes a 20-year warranty with all of their mattress purchases. This warranty is longer than most other mattresses and provides protection against faulty workmanship, materials or indents larger than 2”.

It is important to keep all original sales receipts and keep the mattress tags on the mattresses at all times. To claim a warranty, the mattress must have been used with a proper bed frame and not have been damaged by the user.

Final Thoughts

Douglas is an award-winning Canadian mattress company for solid reasons. With three great mattresses to choose from, there is sure to be one that will cater to your desired sleep needs and budget. Douglas offers one of the best sleep trials and warranties on the market and is a great purchase no matter which model you choose.

Frequently Asked Questions

All Douglas mattresses are proudly made and shipped right here in Canada. Each mattress is made in a Canadian factory and shipped from the closest warehouse to your address. Goodmorning.com, Douglas’s parent company, uses Canadian materials to manufacture each mattress.

Because Douglas mattresses are made with multiople layers of foam, it can take eight full weeks to get used to the mattress and break it in properly. To speed up the process, you can take time each day to walk and crawl on the bed, read and watch tv in bed, or place heavier objects, like stacks of books, on the bed to increase the break-in time. The mattress will naturally soften over time, and it may take your body a while to get used to how it feels.

While Douglas mattresses come in narrow and tall boxes, they will most likely not fit into a PO Box. Douglas recommends shipping to a physical address. The good news is that all Douglas mattresses can be shipped right to your front door, and you don’t have to be home in order to receive them.

All three Douglas Mattresses feature a 365-night sleep trial. You’ll have a full year from the time of your purchase to determine if the mattress works for you. This gives you plenty of time to break the mattress in and for your body to get used to it before you decide to keep it.

All of the Douglas mattresses in our review today come with a 20-year warranty. This longer warranty protects against faulty materials or workmanship, but it also covers indents larger than 2″ within the warranty period. The warranty is easy to use if you need it, so make sure to keep your mattress in good repair and use it with a proper foundation.

While all of the Douglas mattresses on our list are great at temperature control, Douglas Summit is the best option for hot sleepers. It uses multiple unique cooling features, including CryoFusion nanofibres and Polar Temperature Balancing to keep you cool throughout the night. Douglas Original is great for moderate sleepers, and the Douglas Alpine mattress offers a great middle ground between the two.

All three of the Douglas Mattresses in our review today are constructed similarly, though they use a different combination of foam layers. However, all three mattresses are about 6.5 when it comes to firmness, making them Medium Firm. They are ideal for most sleepers, including side and back sleepers. Some stomach sleepers may find these mattresses more supportive than other options.
