Mattress Construction

The Novosbed and Douglas Mattress are both all-foam and latex-free. They are made of four total layers each including their covers. Though they may seem similar in construction, each foam layer features a quality unique to the mattress. Let’s look at the different layers and features within the Novosbed and Douglas mattresses.

Novosbed Mattress Layers

Novosbed Construction
  • Washable Cover. This Tencel cover can be zipped off and washed with the rest of your bedding, making it great for those with allergies. Both soft and cool, it wicks moisture away from you while sleeping for ultimate comfort.
  • Comfort Zone. The Novosbed’s top foam layer is made with open-cell memory foam, which helps with support and pressure relief. Upon ordering, buyers have the option of choosing the firmness level of this top layer.
  • Transition Zone. Made of transitional memory foam, the middle layer of the Novosbed provides deeper support and relief for those with joint pain and discomfort. For Canadians who co-sleep, this layer adds motion isolation, reducing motion transfer between partners.
  • Support Zone. A dense polyfoam base of the Novosbed, this layer provides a solid foundation for the entire mattress. It reduces strain, helps keep your body aligned and prevents overall sagging.

Douglas Mattress Layers

Douglas Mattress Construction
  • Douglas CoolSense Cover. Inspired by the mountains in Western Canada, this removable and washable cover will help draw moisture away from your body at night. For those looking to sleep cool, this cover made of Infinitex fibres will get the job done.
  • Luxury ecoLight Cooling Gel Foam. Canadians who sleep warm will appreciate this 2” thick gel layer, both functional and environmentally responsible, as it has 40% less carbon input than other memory foam mattresses. This high-density foam layer doesn’t retain heat and provides support and pressure relief.
  • Premium Elastex Foam. This middle layer of the Douglas mattress is made of 2” of Elastex foam, which mimics latex foam. For those that want the supportiveness of a latex mattress but without the chemicals, this is a great option. Canadians with latex allergies but seeking ultimate motion isolation should consider Douglas.
  • Motion Isolation Support Foam. Made of 6” thick high-density polyfoam, this bottom support foam base will help reduce motion transfer even further. This layer makes for a great foundation that will keep the mattress from breaking down over the years compared to other memory foam mattresses.

Firmness

While the Novosbed and the Douglas are all-foam layered mattresses, they are quite different in their firmness rankings. While the Douglas is a solid medium firm mattress, the Novosbed has a very unique option that allows for customizing of firmness. This feature is not often found in memory foam mattress brands and should not be overlooked. Because of the ability to choose your firmness, the Novosbed wins in this category.

Novosbed Mattress Firmness

The Novosbed mattress is a fantastic choice for those who know what type of sleeping surface they prefer and wish to customize their mattress. While the middle and bottom layer of the Novosbed remains the same, buyers can choose between soft, medium or firm top foam layers upon checkout, all for the same cost.

Soft

4 on Firmness Scale

Canadians who sleep on their stomach may prefer to choose the soft firmness, which comes in at a 4 on our ranking scale.

Medium

5 on Firmness Scale

If you sleep on your side or switch between side and back, the medium firmness option, which ranks at a 5, might be the best for you.

Firm

6.5 on Firmness Scale

Sleepers who have joint pain or sleep deeply on their back could use the additional support offered from the firm option, which comes in at a 6.5 on our firmness scale.

While Novosbed recommends ordering a firmness that you will be happy with initially, you can modify your mattress if needed. After 30 days of having your Novosbed mattress, you can order an additional Comfort+ Topper if you find that you need a softer or firmer topper than what your mattress base. This topper sits directly on top of your existing Novosbed mattress.

Douglas Mattress Firmness

6.5 on Firmness Scale

Typical of most all-foam mattresses, the Douglas mattress comes in just one available firmness and is not customizable. Ranked as a medium-firm, it comes in at 6.5 on our firmness scale. With multiple firm foam layers, this is a great mattress for sleeping on your side or back. Canadians who sleep on their stomachs may want to look for a softer mattress.

Durability

The Novosbed and the Douglas mattresses are high-quality brands made in Canada. Each with four foam layers and a washable cover, these mattresses are built to last with proper cleaning and care. The Novosbed has the upper hand in this category, with the availability of their very own Comfort+ Toppers that you can switch out throughout the years if needed.

Novosbed Mattress Durability

With three foam layers, the Novosbed is a mattress that will last you many years of comfortable sleep. While both mattresses are high quality and durable, we think the Novosbed is slightly superior in this category due to its Comfort+ Topper system. The foam layers of the mattress contribute to less breakdown and sinkage over the years, but their unique Comfort+ topper system allows for the changing of firmness levels when needed. Changing out the toppers may make your mattress occasionally feel like new again, though the cost to do so may be prohibitive.

Douglas Mattress Durability

The Douglas mattress has a total of three layers of foam construction, which contribute to the mattress lasting for many years. While its top two foam layers help overall breakdown, the bottom 6” thick base layer made of high-density foam is what really will help the mattress last over time. The Douglas is a great choice for a mattress that will last, though the Novosbed may be better if you want to occasionally refresh the bed’s firmness with new foam toppers

Motion Isolation

For Canadians who co-sleep or have pets on their bed, choosing a mattress that helps with motion isolation is incredibly important. Being woken up in the middle of the night by movement is difficult. Choosing a mattress that helps prevent motion transfer may be a deciding factor in determining which mattress to purchase. While the Novosbed mattress does a good job with motion isolation, we give the advantage here to the Douglas mattress, which features a Motion Isolation Foam base explicitly made to combat motion transfer.

Novosbed Mattress Motion Isolation

Novosbed Pressure Relief

With a top layer made of open-cell memory foam, the Novosbed does a good job of motion isolation. The middle transition layer is extra helpful in stopping additional motion transfer, which is excellent if you are a light sleeper. The Douglas mattress may better suit those extremely restless or with very active co-sleeper or pets.

Douglas Mattress Motion Isolation

The Douglas mattress effortlessly tackles motion isolation due to its middle Elastex foam, which mimics latex in its responsiveness. Combined with the bottom 6” thick Motion Isolation Foam base, the mattress helps reduce motion transfer between even the most restless sleepers.

Temperature Control

If you sleep warm or live somewhere where the ambient temperature fluctuates, choosing a mattress with temperature control is crucial to sleeping comfortably night after night. Like most all-foam mattresses, the Novosbed and Douglas do retain some heat. We give the Douglas the upper hand in the temperature control category though, as it features a top layer made of Luxury ecoLight Cooling Gel, which helps keep you cooler overall at night than the Novosbed.

Novosbed Mattress Temperature Control

The Novosbed mattress does a decent job with temperature control due to its top layer made of open-cell memory foam. This layer helps strap heat evenly and wick it away from your body while sleeping. For those that sleep extremely hot, this mattress won’t completely cool you at night, and the Douglas may be a better option for you.

Douglas Mattress Temperature Control

As our top choice for temperature control, the Douglas mattress has multiple features to help keep you cool at night. Its top Infinitex cover features moisture and heat-wicking fibres, which help reduce heat directly next to your body. Its top foam layer, the Luxury ecoLight Cooling Gel foam, absorbs heat throughout the night, easily maintaining your body temperature.

Edge Support

For Canadians who sleep near the edge of the bed, choosing a mattress with edge support may be necessary. Like most memory foam mattresses on the market, the Novosbed and Douglas do not feature any special edge support features to help combat sinking or slipping. Overall, the firmer the mattress, the less likely you will have sinkage or slippage on the edges with repeated sleeping or sitting.

Novosbed Mattress Edge Support

The Novosbed mattress does not feature any additional edge support features. If you often sleep on the edge of the bed, this could lead to some sagging of the mattress. If you choose a softer firmness when ordering a Novosbed mattress, there is a greater likelihood of this happening. A firmer mattress won’t wholly prevent edge sinkage or slipping, but it can help.

Douglas Mattress Edge Support

Douglas Mattress Edge Support

Like the Novosbed, the Douglas mattress does not feature any specialized edge support attributes. With its 6.5 firmness ranking, though, it can help with overall sinking or sagging on the edge if you happen to sleep there regularly.

Pricing

Often, the deciding factor for many Canadians when buying a mattress is cost. While both the Novosbed and the Douglas feature similar all-foam construction and layers, their pricing is quite different. The Novosbed mattress costs more than the Douglas, but the customizable firmness is a large attribute of that. The Douglas mattress is also the only model available in a split king size, which can be critical to some buyers. Here are the prices for the Novosbed and Douglas mattresses.

Shipping

When buying a mattress online, factoring in any shipping costs as well as delivery time should be considered. The Novosbed and the Douglas mattresses ship free to most locations throughout Canada, though some more remote areas may require a shipping fee. Delivery time for both mattresses is similar, ranging from 7-12 business days after ordering.

Novosbed Mattress Shipping

The Novosbed mattress offers free shipping to most Canadian locations. Remote areas may require an additional fee. More information about your specific location can be found on the Novosbed website. Novosbed mattresses usually ship out 1-5 business days after ordering, and delivery can take an additional 5-7 business days.

Douglas Mattress Shipping

Like the Novosbed, Douglas mattresses ship free to most Canadian addresses, with occasional upcharges on more remote locations. Douglas mattresses usually ship out within 1-5 business days of ordering, though delivery can take an additional seven business days.

Sleep Trial and Returns

When you decide to buy a mattress online, you give up the ability to test it out in person. Making sure that the mattress you are buying has a good sleep trial and return policy is essential. Both Novosbed and Douglas have excellent sleep trials. Novosbed’s respectable 120-night sleep trial is above the industry standard, but Douglas offers a 365-night trial. It’s the longest trial available on the Canadian market. Both allow for returns within the sleep trial, but their policies vary greatly.

Novosbed Mattress Sleep Trial and Returns

The Novosbed mattress includes a 120-night sleep trial. Novosbed requires you to have had the mattress for at least 60 days before starting the return process. If, at the 30-day mark, you are unhappy with the mattress, Novosbed will allow you to choose one of their Comfort+ topper kits to modify the firmness. After 60 days, if you are still unhappy with it, then you can return the mattress via the online process.

Once you initiate a return and prove the condition of the mattress via photos, Novosbed will arrange a pickup time. Once the mattress is collected, you can expect a refund within 48 hours, though it can take up to 14 business days to post to your original form of payment.

Douglas Mattress Sleep Trial and Returns

The Douglas mattress includes a 365-night sleep trial, which is the longest on the Canadian mattress market. Though you have a full year to try the mattress, you only need to keep it for 30 days to initiate a return. This is a shorter time frame than the 60 days that Novosbed requires.

Returns are quick and easy to start on the Douglas website. A representative will arrange for at time to collect the mattress. Once the return is complete, you can expect a refund in 4 to 7 days. The refund will be returned to your original form of payment.

Warranty

Making sure the mattress you decide to buy has a great warranty is always a good idea. Luckily, the Novosbed and the Douglas mattress have extended warranties. The Nosvosbed mattress features a 15-year warranty, whereas the Douglas mattress features a slightly longer warranty of 20 years.

Novosbed Mattress Warranty

The Novosbed mattress includes a 15-year warranty, with more extensive coverage happening in the first ten years. The warranty covers items like visible indents, foam cracking and faulty zippers.

If you need to file a warranty claim, you must show proof of damage before Novosbed repairs or replace the mattress. For the first ten years of the warranty, Novosbed will repair or replace it for free, but for the remaining five years of the warranty, you will be expected to pay up to 75% of the purchase price to have your mattress repaired or replaced.

Douglas Mattress Warranty

The Douglas mattress is covered under a 20-year warranty. It covers similar issues as Novosbed’s warranty, including indents of more than 2”, faulty artistry, materials and construction. If you need to file a warranty claim, expect to prove the issues via email and photos. Once approved, Douglas will repair the mattress for free for the entire 20 years of the warranty. If a replacement mattress is needed, you may be required to pay the difference between what you paid and the cost of a new mattress.

As two excellent Canadian brands, you can’t go wrong with either the Novosbed or the Douglas for your next mattress. Frequently Asked Questions

Both Novosbed and Douglas are made in Canada. Both mattresses fall under the Goodmorning.com mattress company, which is a Canadian company that manufactures within Canada. Both options are great for those who want a mattress made in Canada exclusively.

If you happen to sleep warm at night, the Douglas mattress is the better option for staying cool. The ecoLight Cooling Gel Foam layer helps reduce temperature throughout the night. The blend of latex materials also reduces temperature throughout the mattress, while the Endy’s heavier memory foam materials can sometimes make overheating worse.

While the Novosbed mattress has a respectible 120-night sleep trial, the Douglas mattress has the longest sleep trial on the Canadian market. You can try it for a full 365 nights before you decide if it’s the right option for you. If you want more time to determine if your mattress is right for you, the Douglas Mattress is the right option for you.

Unfortunately, the Novosbed Mattress has been discontinued by the manufacturer. It is no longer available to purchase. There are plenty of other options to choose from, including Goodmorning.com’s new Octave Mattress
