Casper is one of the biggest mattress companies in North America. Throughout Canada and the US, Casper is a dominant mattress company that is at the forefront of innovation. These mattresses use high-quality materials and unique construction to provide better temperature control and pressure relief than some options on the Canadian market. In our Casper mattress review, we’ll look at all the features that put these premium mattresses in a league of their own.

Should You Buy Casper Mattresses?

Casper makes high-end mattresses that take a unique approach to traditional mattress construction. You’ll find materials that aren’t used elsewhere on the Canadian market, even if these mattresses aren’t exclusively Canadian-made. If you’re looking for a higher-end mattress that offers support and cooling, these Casper mattresses are worth a try. You can try them for 100 nights after your purchase to make sure they’re right for you, too.

Here’s how these mattresses stack up. In the rest of our Casper mattress review, we’ll look at the features that set these mattresses apart.

It's Great For:

Considerations:

The Casper Original mattress is the mattress that started it all. Casper’s premier mattress features perforated foams, zoned support foam, and a durable support base that helps contribute to better support and alignment. Though this mattress is medium-firm when it comes to feeling, it leans a little to the firmer side. As a result, back sleepers and those who suffer from back pain will enjoy the way this mattress works for them.

This mattress offers targeted support, with three zones of support within the middle of the mattress. The transition layer offers firmer foam in the middle of the mattress for better hip and lumbar support, which is ideal for those who suffer from back pain. Softer foam at the top and bottom of the mattress helps relieve pressure, so you don’t wake up with uncomfortable pressure points.

The top layer of perforated foam helps reduce heat build-up, too. Hundreds of small perforations carry cooler air up through the core of the mattress while wicking away heat and humidity. If you sleep hot, this layer will cool you down almost instantly. Together, these features create a mattress that works for most Canadians, especially those with specific sleep needs.

It's Great For:

Considerations:

The Casper Original Hybrid Mattress is a medium-firm luxury hybrid mattress. This mattress uses a blend of Casper’s unique foam options to create a feeling that you won’t find anywhere else. The coils in the support base compress individually to deliver more customized support, so you’ll get exactly the feel that you need. Other features throughout the mattress, including the Zoned Support layer, help reduce strain and improve support throughout.

While the all-foam version of this mattress is a little on the firm side, this mattress is a little softer. That’s partially due to the support coils, which provide more bounce and movement overall. If you prefer a mattress with a softer sleeping surface, this might be a great alternative for you.

The coils also add additional temperature control features. Combined with the cool knit cover and the perforated foam within, this pocket coil layer provides better airflow and comfort throughout the core of the mattress. You get to reap the benefits of these features, which is especially helpful if you sleep hot. The medium-firm design is great for most sleepers, particularly side sleepers and heavier stomach sleepers

Mattress Construction

While the Casper Original Mattress and the Casper Original Hybrid Mattress offer similar construction, the main difference is in the support base. Here, we’ll look at how the mattresses in our Casper mattress review are constructed.

Casper Original Mattress

Casper Original Mattress Construction
  1. AirScape Foam.  A layer of perforated foam introduces better airflow to the cover, allowing for pressure relief and temperature control at the same time.
  2. Zoned Support. Zoned Support memory foam offers firmer support across your hips and lower back, while softer foams around your shoulders help promote comfort and pressure relief.
  3. Durable Base. A durable support base is made with high-density foam. This allows it to prevent sagging while offering outstanding support, alignment, and balance throughout the mattress.

Casper Original Hybrid Mattress

Casper Original Hybrid Mattress Construction
  1. AirScape Foam. Like the Casper Original, this layer of perforated foam helps filter cooling air up toward your body as you sleep, reducing temperature as it helps soothe uncomfortable pressure points.
  2. Zoned Support. Casper’s unique Zoned Support layer offers three ergonomic zones, including firm foam in the middle of the mattress for hip and lumbar support. Softer foam in the other quarters helps with balance and pressure relief.
  3. Spring Layer. Firm, resilient springs compress individually to deliver comfort exactly where you need it. This layer helps promote airflow throughout the mattress while keeping you well-supported. A perimeter of edge support foam bolsters the edges of the mattress, preventing sagging or sinking at the sides of the bed.

Firmness

Casper Original Mattress

7 on Firmness Scale

Of the two mattresses featured in our Casper Mattress review, the Casper Original mattress is the firmer option. The durable support foam at the base of this mattress provides firmer support throughout, particularly for your hips and back. If you suffer from back pain or need additional lumbar support, this version of the mattress might be better for you. The medium-firm feel is great for most sleeping positions.

Side sleepers, back sleepers, and heavier stomach sleepers will appreciate the way this mattress feels. It might run a bit too firm for lighter sleepers, particularly lighter stomach sleepers

Casper Original Hybrid Mattress

6.5 on Firmness Scale

The Casper Original Hybrid mattress is about a 6.5 on the firmness scale. It’s still a bit firmer than a medium mattress, but it’s better suited for stomach sleepers and side sleepers than the firmer all-foam Casper Original mattress. Here, you’ll find individual support from the coil layer, which compresses only where you need it. The result is strong support around your lower back, but a plush-feeling surface that helps relieve pressure.

Canadians in all sleeping positions will love the way this mattress feels. It’s particularly appealing to side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers who need firmer support.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is important for those who have restless partners. If you often feel your partner moving around throughout the night, a mattress with better motion control can be a great way to ensure that you stay asleep. While both of the mattresses in our Casper Mattress review offer moderate motion isolation, neither of them completely isolates motion. The result is a mattress that shields you from most of your partner’s movements but won’t stop you from feeling them altogether.

The Casper Original mattress is a little better at motion isolation. The foam support layer helps absorb motion and dampen it, meaning you’ll get less motion from the other side of the bed. If this is a concern for you, consider choosing the all-foam Casper Original mattress instead of the hybrid option.

Pressure Relief

Casper Mattress Pressure Relief

Pressure relief can make all the difference when it comes to comfort. If you have ever woken up stiff, uncomfortable, or in pain, it might be because your mattress offers insufficient pressure relief. This is important if you sleep on your side, or if you don’t move around a lot at night.

Because both of the Casper mattresses featured here use the same general construction, both are great at relieving pressure. The foam layers on top of the support core work together to cradle your pressure points and relieve any discomfort you may experience throughout the night. The Casper Original Hybrid mattress has a small advantage when it comes to pressure relief due to its softer firmness level.

Temperature Control

Do you wake up hot and sweaty during the night? You aren’t the only one. Many Canadians overheat as they sleep, leading to uncomfortable sleep disruptions. If this sounds like you, your memory foam mattress might be part of the problem. Memory foam tends to retain heat, so your bed only gets warmer as the night goes on.

Thankfully, both the Casper Original and the Casper Original Hybrid use perforated foam as a top layer. While this foam still retains a bit of heat, the perforations help channel colder air up through the mattress to cool you off. It helps vent heat, too – this means it doesn’t build up under you as you sleep, so you won’t wake up hot or sweaty. These perforations wick away heat and humidity, moving them away from you to stay at an ideal temperature.

The Casper Original Hybrid is a little cooler than the all-foam version of this mattress. The pocket coils help reduce higher temperatures throughout the mattress because they provide a bit of additional airflow.

Edge Support

Tired of sinking or sagging when you sit on the edge of your bed? Most bed-in-a-box mattresses, particularly all-foam options, lack proper edge support. This means that you can feel like you’re sliding off the bed when you sit up in the morning.

Thankfully, the Casper Original Hybrid mattress offers a solution. A perimeter of edge support foam surrounds the pocket coil layer on this version of the mattress. As a result, the edges are bolstered. You’ll feel more comfortable while sitting or sleeping near the edges of the mattress because of this extra support.

The Casper Original mattress doesn’t use the same type of edge support, so it’s lacking in this department. It’s about average when it comes to edge support, much like the other memory foam mattresses on the Canadian market.

Ease of Movement

Casper Mattress Ease of Movement

You don’t want to feel ‘stuck’ in your mattress while you’re trying to get comfortable in the middle of the night. Memory foam mattresses can sometimes provide a ‘quicksand’ feeling that makes it difficult to move around, resulting in excess heat build-up and discomfort. However, both Casper mattresses featured in our Casper mattress review use polyfoam for the top and support layer. It doesn’t sink quite as much as memory foam, but it will help with pressure relief.

As a result, you’ll be able to move around comfortably without feeling like you are stuck in the mattress. Combination sleepers and those who move around a lot as they sleep will be comfortable on either of these mattresses.

Pricing

All of Casper’s mattresses are luxury models. They are made with extremely high-quality materials with unique functions you won’t find in other Canadian mattresses. These mattresses use additional features, proprietary materials, and luxury layers to create a feel you own’t find anywhere else. Because of these features, you can expect to pay a higher price for these mattresses. Here are the sizes, prices, and dimensions for each Casper Original mattress model.

Shipping

Casper ships most of its products free through UPS, their carrier of choice. This applies to most of Canada and all of the continental United States. Areas such as Yukon, Northwest, and Nunavut require a shipping fee (as do all locations in Northern Canada). You can choose to add an in-home delivery and setup service to your order. This costs $249 and includes the removal of your old mattress and the complete setup of your new mattress.

Standard orders should arrive within 3 to 9 business days of your shipping date. In-home delivery and setup orders may require up to 2 weeks to set up, as you need to be home when your mattress is delivered and set up.

Sleep Trial and Returns

All of Casper’s sleep products use a trial period to allow you to try the products before deciding to keep them. Their mattresses, including the Casper Original and Casper Original Hybrid, have a 100-night sleep trial. This trial begins when you receive your mattress. During the first 100 nights of use, you can return the mattress without questions if you decide it doesn’t work for you.

Casper requires that you try the mattress for at least 30 days before returning it. This is because it takes at least 30 days for your body to adjust to a new mattress. They are asking you to give these mattresses a fair chance before you make your final decision. If, after the first 30 nights, you decide that you still don’t like it, you can initiate a return via the Casper website.

Casper will schedule a pick-up with their courier to retrieve the mattress. They will try to find a charity or other organization to donate your used mattress. Keep in mind that your mattress should be free of stains, and should be in like-new sanitary conditions. We recommend using a mattress protector during your trial period for this reason.

Once Casper receives confirmation that your mattress has been picked up, they will process a full refund of your purchase price. Refunds are processed within a week and take 3 to 10 business days to return to your original payment method after processing.

Warranty

Both Casper’s Original mattress versions are covered under a 10-year limited warranty. This warranty covers defects in manufacturing and materials that may cause lasting damage to your mattress.

Casper’s mattress warranty covers the following defects.

  • Visible indents of more than 1 inch depth that are not associated with using an incompatible foundation or an adjustable base
  • Physical flaws or defects that cause the foam to split or crack during normal usage
  • Problems with the zipper assembly on the mattress cover

However, Casper does not cover the following.

  • Normal softening over time.
  • Comfort preference.
  • Damage caused by misuse or improper care

If you believe that your mattress falls under the defects covered by Casper’s mattress warranty, you should file a warranty claim on Casper’s website. You will need your original date and proof of purchase, as well as evidence of the defect that falls under warranty. This may involve specific photos of the mattress and the affected areas.

Casper will choose to repair or replace your mattress as required. They will pay for all return shipping costs, too. However, you can request to ‘upgrade’ your mattress if it falls under the warranty. If you want to have a more expensive replacement mattress shipped to you instead of the same or equivalent model, you will need to pay the difference between your original purchase price and the price of your upgraded mattress.

If you have your original mattress repaired or replaced with the same model, your warranty will not restart or renew when you get a new mattress or a repair. An upgraded mattress has a separate warranty term, which begins when you purchase your mattress.

Final Thoughts

Casper’s Original and Original Hybrid mattresses seem simple at first, but both offer unique features that you won’t find in other companies’ mattresses. Though they aren’t made exclusively in Canada (and you might receive a mattress that was made in the U.S. depending on their location), they provide quality mattresses that are made to last.

Frequently Asked Questions

Casper is an American company that makes some of its mattresses in Canada. Though the mattresses shipped within Canada are usually made in the country, they might come from the U.S. The materials used in these mattresses are sourced from around the world, too.

You should look at the firmness, construction, and features of each mattress to make a decision. Your comfort preferences are personal. Despite all of our recommendations, your preferences may differ. Taking advantage of Casper’s sleep trial is one of the best ways to see if you’ll like a mattress.

The Casper Original and Casper Original Hybrid mattresses are compatible with most bed frames, including slatted frames, adjustable frames, and box springs. You should never place your mattress on the floor, as this can cause mould and other mattress damage. Make sure to use the correct bed frame size for your mattress, too.

Because of the way that Casper mattresses are constructed, you shouldn’t flip them when it’s time for a change. Instead, the company recommends rotating your mattress 180 degrees to ensure that your mattress stays comfortable in the long run. Rotating the mattress reduces body indents and allows a more comfortable experience over time.

Neither of the Casper mattresses in our Casper mattress review offer removable covers. You cannot remove the cover to wash it. If you need to clean the cover, you can spot clean using warm water and a mild detergent, but we recommend using a mattress protector to avoid damage or staining on the cover itself.
