While most mattresses on the Canadian market are made with synthetic materials, organic mattresses are eco-conscious and cleaner. This can be better for those with allergies, or those who are opposed to creating any type of environmental footprint. Whatever your reason, you can tell the difference in an organic mattress the moment you lie down. Though there are only a few options for organic mattresses available on the Canadian market, we were able to find the best of the best.

The best organic mattresses in Canada in 2024 were selected based on an in-depth evaluation process in our test lab. After our tests, we sent the mattresses to our at-home testers. They tested the mattresses over time, often for the length of the sleep trial offered by the manufacturer. The results of both sets of feedback are in our list below.

  • Best Support – Simba Hybrid Organic Mattress

Why Did We Choose These Organic Mattresses in Canada?

Each of the organic mattresses we evaluated stood out to us in unique ways. These highlights became the reasons we chose to recommend these mattresses to you. Our organic mattresses were chosen for their use of materials, commitment to the environment, and willingness to be transparent. Here’s why each of these organic mattresses made our list.

The Silk & Snow Organic Mattress is the best organic option overall in Canada. This Canadian-made mattress uses familiar features and 100% natural and organic materials to create a firmly supportive mattress. Silk & Snow is fully transparent about their material sources, so you can feel good about your purchase.

If you need more support from your mattress, consider the Simba Hybrid Organic Mattress. This mattress features two layers of pocket coils, which help to create a contouring and supportive sleeping experience for all sleeping positions.

The Obasan Organic Mattress offers the best customization on our list. This organic mattress is built for you using several modules. The modules you choose are based on your sleeping preferences, and each side of the bed can have a different firmness.

The Avocado Green Mattress is the perfect option for Canadians who prefer an eco-conscious organic mattress. With multiple certifications, outstanding support, and transparent sources for the materials used to create the mattress, you’ll find everything you need here.

Tired of waking up hot in the middle of the night? Consider the GhostBed Natural Mattress. This mattress features perforated foams and naturally heat-resistant materials to create a cooler sleeping experience. It’s a plush mattress for those who prefer a softer sleep.

Moving around a lot at night? You may find that you feel stuck in a traditional memory foam mattress. The Essentia Stratami Organic Mattress is a latex-only option, which means it’s cooler and more responsive than standard memory foam mattresses.

It's Great For:

The best organic mattress in Canada for 2024 is the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress. This option features firm zoned support from a coil base layer but works with organic and natural materials to create a sleep experience that eco-conscious Canadians will love. This mattress is a little firmer than some of the other mattresses in Silk & Snow’s catalogue, so it’s also a good option for those who need a little extra firmness or support from their mattress. This mattress is also one of the most inexpensive options on our list, which is important when organic mattresses are often expensive.

This mattress uses transparently-sourced organic materials that are certified by the GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) and the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). Like most mattresses from this company, you can easily source each part of the mattress. The natural wool layer comes from New Zealand, while the organic latex used in the middle of the mattress is from Sri Lanka. The cotton and coil layers are made in Canada, and all materials are assembled in Toronto. These materials are the best of the best, and Silk & Snow is perfectly transparent about their manufacturing process.

The Silk & Snow Organic Mattress defines comfort, starting with the GOST Certified Organic Cotton Cover. This quilted cover is extremely soft and breathable. It creates a cooler sleeping surface that is smooth and comfortable on your skin, and your sheets will slide right over it without any issues. The first layer within the mattress is natural New Zealand wool, which acts as a natural fire retardant. Natural wool is self-extinguishing and doesn’t ignite until it reaches extremely high temperatures. This means that Silk & Snow can avoid using fire-retardant chemicals throughout the rest of the mattress. It’s comfortable, too!

The middle transition layer of the mattress is made of organic Dunlop latex. This latex is made without any synthetic materials, meaning some users with latex allergies will be more comfortable on this mattress. This layer is durable and responsive, so you can move around on the mattress easily. Below this layer is the pocket coil base, the hybrid support system that keeps you aligned and comfortable throughout the night.

Up to 992 pocket coils create this layer. It offers zoned support, with firmer coils through the centre of the mattress and softer coils under your knees and shoulders. Firmer, more supportive coils around the edges of the mattress keep the edges well-supported, so you won’t slip or slide if you sit on the edge of the bed in the morning.

Key Features

  • Zoned Coil Support. The pocket coil base features zoned support, with firmer coils in the centre of the mattress and around the edges. Softer coils under your shoulders promote pressure relief while keeping you aligned.
  • GOLS Certified Latex. The middle layer of the mattress is made of organic Dunlop latex, which avoids many of the chemicals present in synthetic latex mattresses. This may help those with allergies, too. This latex is certified by the Global Organic Latex Standard.
  • GOTS Certified Cotton Cover. The cover of the Silk & Snow Organic mattress is made of organic cotton, which is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard. It’s soft, breathable, and cool.
  • Organic Wool Layer. A layer of organic wool works like a natural fire retardant, so the rest of the mattress is free of fire-retardant chemicals. This layer also wicks away heat and moisture.

Our Expert’s Take

“This organic mattress is great for eco-conscious Canadians, but there are enough benefits and familiar features for those who haven’t purchased an organic mattress before. The strong coil layer and comfortable, firm top make this mattress perfect for a range of Canadian sleepers.”

The Simba Hybrid Organic Mattress offers some of the best support when it comes to organic mattresses. This hybrid mattress uses two layers of coils to create ideal support and comfort, so even those who need additional support will love the way this mattress feels. The materials are 100% recyclable and organic, and delivery is carbon neutral. You can feel great about purchasing this mattress, especially if your aim is to reduce your environmental impact.

Not only is every part of this mattress recyclable, but it’s easy to do so. The mattress is assembled without chemical glue, making recycling easier than other mattresses. When you drop it off at a recycling center, you can rest assured that it won’t be a hassle for the staff that end up breaking it down.

The cover of the Simba Hybrid Organic Mattress is made of breathable GOTS organic cotton. It’s cool and smooth to the touch. The button half of the cover is made of breathable 3D mesh, which is made with recycled and new fibres. This helps the core of the mattress with airflow and is sturdy enough to help the mattress keep its shape.

Inside the cover, you’ll find a top layer of Simba Renew. This anti-allergic layer is made with Simba Renew fibres, which are 75% recycled. This layer helps those with allergies sleep a little more comfortably while aiding with natural airflow and comfort. The second layer of foam is GOLS Organic Latex, which is perforated for improved breathability. This layer helps with pressure relief and support, cushioning your deepest pressure points. Next is the Aerocoil spring layer, which uses up to 2,000 cone-like micro-coils.

This layer helps support your body, contouring to your shape to offer better support where you need it. This layer sits right on top of the second coil layer, which is much like a traditional pocket coil layer. This SupportCore layer is zoned, with five targetted support areas that use up to 1,000 pocketed springs between them. Firmer coils through the centre of the mattress keep your lumbar and hips aligned, while softer coils at your shoulders prevent pressure points. Overall, this mattress is great for those who sleep hot or those who need a little more support from their mattress.

Key Features

  • Two Supportive Coil Layers. A layer of Aerocoil springs and a larger pocket coil support base work to align and support you, no matter how you sleep. It’s suitable for all sleeping positions.
  • Recycled Simba Renew Layer. This breathable layer is made with up to 75% recycled materials. It works to prevent dust mites and adds additional airflow to the mattress.
  • 100% Recyclable. This mattress is 100% recyclable. The company makes it easy to break the mattress down and recycle the parts without any additional hassle, such as chemical glues.
  • Zoned Support. The supportive pocket coil base uses up to 1,000 pocket springs to create 5 distinct support zones, perfect for those who need a little extra support.

Our Expert’s Take

“This mattress offers top-tier support, and the company aligns with the values of many eco-conscious Canadians. If you need an organic mattress because of environmental impact, this might be the mattress for you.”

It's Great For:

The Obasan Organic Mattress is a unique offering, even among the other mattresses on the Canadian market. While some mattress companies offer limited customization for their mattresses, Obasan is redefining the way that Canadians purchase mattresses. This luxury brand is fully customizable. Instead of a specific construction, Obasan offers modular sections so you can build a mattress that is well-suited to you.

Whether you need softer layers to prevent pressure points or firmer layers for more support, this mattress can help you achieve the perfect bed for you. Tired of trying different mattresses, attempting to find the one that helps you sleep better? Obasan can help you build a mattress that helps you through whatever sleep difficulties you are experiencing.

When you choose the larger-sized mattresses (Queen size and King size), you can customize each side of the bed separately. There are three different support level modules for the base of your mattress. The middle layer is comprised of up to three different pieces, which can add support where you need it or prevent pressure in your problem areas. The mattress topper, or top layer, can be any firmness you prefer.

Once you receive all the pieces of your mattress, you must assemble them yourself. If you’re worried about this step, you definitely don’t have to be! There are instructions on the Obasan website and their customer service team is always ready to help. Once you have all of the pieces in their correct places, you can zip them into the protective mattress cover. This process makes the Obasan Organic mattress one of the most unique options on the Canadian market.

These modules can be changed out at will, too. If you go through a life change (such as an injury, surgery, or pregnancy) and your sleep needs change, you can simply order a replacement module and change the way your mattress feels. Regardless of which modules you choose, you’ll find GOTS and GOLS-certified cotton, rubber latex, and wool. None of the materials in these mattresses are synthetic, so you can rest easy.

Key Features

  • Completely Customizable. Every layer of the Obasan Organic Mattress is customizable, and each side of the bed is customizable individually. This means you and your partner can have different layers to suit your preferences.
  • Modular. This mattress is modular in nature. If you have a life change, you can always order new layers or sections to replace your current options. This means a change in support needs doesn’t have to mean a brand-new mattress.
  • Natural and Organic. All of the materials used in each mattress are natural and organic. There are no synthetic materials or chemicals in any part of the mattress, regardless of which firmness or options you choose to purchase.
  • Firmness Toppers. Need to adjust the firmness of your mattress? The top layers of each mattress offer complete firmness customization according to your preferences.

Our Expert’s Take

“The Obasan Organic Mattress is the perfect way to find a mattress that is suited to your individual needs. This mattress can be customized completely, down to each layer on each side of the mattress. It can help meet your specific needs without any additional work.”

It's Great For:

If you are looking for a mattress that delivers excellent support while maintaining high eco-conscious standards, the Avocado Green mattress may be for you. These handmade mattresses utilize high-quality organic materials. Due to their unique design, there are no petroleum-based polyurethane foams, memory foams, chemical adhesives, or flame retardants used in the construction of the mattress.

Avocado mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold Certified and feature GOLS-certified organic latex. They are made from sustainable sources, including 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton and 100% GOTS-certified organic wool. Even their wool is sourced from their own herding collective, which includes more than 200,000 sheep in the Himalayan foothills.

Quality manufacturing and eco-friendly materials are not all these mattresses have to offer. Delivering top-of-the-line support, Avocado mattresses offer 1,414 tempered steel coils, arranged in five ergonomic zones. This, combined with a fully reinforced steel perimeter, ensures there is support right to the mattress’s edge. As a result, there is less motion transferred, and weight is distrusted evenly. With fewer pressure points, your back remains aligned, which can help to alleviate back pain.

Avocado’s commitment to quality features mattresses that are needle-tufted by hand, not glued.  Distinctive needle-tufted rosettes are sewn into the mattresses with white organic wool. Ribbons are pulled through the full mattress in 32 locations to durably bind layers together without using toxic solvents or adhesives. Because they use only organic wool, Avocado is able to avoid using potentially toxic flame retardants in their mattresses while still meeting safety standards. Overall, this mattress is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a highly supportive mattress while still adhering to eco-conscious standards.

Key Features

  • Multiple Certifications. GREENGUARD Gold Certified and made from GOLS-certified organic latex and GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool ensures that all mattresses adhere to the highest eco standards.
  • Available in Standard or Pillow Top. Avocado Green mattresses are available in both a standard medium-firm mattress and a gentle-firm pillow top, adding 2 inches of organic certified latex rubber foam. This makes it an excellent option for side and combination sleepers.
  • Heavy-Duty Handles. Two upholstered handles are attached to both sides of the mattress, helping to move or adjust the mattress easily. When it’s time to turn the mattress, it won’t be difficult.
  • Non-Toxic Materials. No petroleum-based polyurethane foams, memory foams, chemical adhesives, or flame retardants are used in the mattresses’ manufacturing.

Our Expert’s Take

“This mattress offers Canadians an excellent balance between high-quality support and sustainable, eco-friendly standards. For anyone seeking a comfortable mattress while still considering the impact on the environment, this is an excellent option.”

This hybrid mattress is supportive and clean, with reinforced edge support, perforated foam, and layers that can reduce pressure and keep you asleep longer. You won’t have to worry about motion transfer or overheating when you sleep on this mattress.

The GhostBed Natural mattress features multiple certifications, including OEKO-TEX 100 Certification, as well as USDA Organic certification, GOLS certification, and GOTS certification. This mattress is also approved by the Control Union certification, which ensures sustainable supply lines for all of the materials used within the mattress.

This medium mattress features four layers of foam, coils, and fabrics, all wrapped in an organic cotton cover. The cotton used in this cover feels luxurious. It’s soft, but it’s also clean and free of all chemicals and toxins. Beneath the cover is a layer of natural wool, which is sustainable and comfortable. This plush layer helps reduce heat, but it also acts as a fire retardant. This means that GhostBed doesn’t have to use chemicals to reduce ignition temperatures throughout the rest of the mattress. This durable layer also helps you move around easily without breaking down over time.

The next layer is made with natural Talalay Latex, which provides bounce and cradling without allowing you to feel as though you are stuck in the mattress. If you like to move around a lot as you sleep, this layer can help keep you comfortable as you do so. It’s also great for cooling and doesn’t contain any synthetic materials. The pocket coil support base features 8” reinforced coils, which are supportive and cool. These coils are firmer around the edges of the mattress, which can help improve the way it feels to sit on the edge of the mattress in the mornings.

Finally, the final layer is natural Dunlop latex. This layer is firm and supportive, which helps with longevity and durability throughout the lifespan of the mattress. If you want a comfortable, cool mattress that will last for years to come, the GhostBed Natural mattress is one of the best options for you.

Key Features

  • Multiple Certifications. The GhostBed Natural Mattress carries certifications from the GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standards), the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), USDA Organic, Control Union, and OEKO-TEX.
  • Medium Firmness. This mattress is softer than most of the other organic mattresses on our list, making it ideal for those who prefer a plush feel for their mattress.
  • Contouring and Responsive. It’s easy to move around on this mattress, but it also contours to your body to relieve pressure and provide support. The quick response of the materials is a notable feature that some mattresses lack.
  • Edge Support. GhostBed’s proprietary Spirited Edge system provides strong edge support. Firmer coils throughout the corners of the mattress help keep you well-supported and prevent sagging when you sit at the edge of the bed.

Our Expert’s Take

“The GhostBed Natural mattress provides support and responsiveness, but it also provides plusher comfort than most of the other mattresses on our list. It’s cool, comfortable, and helps with pressure relief. It also works to reduce lumbar support and provides great edge support.”

If you prefer an organic mattress but like the responsiveness of latex, you’ll love the Essentia Stratami Organic Mattress. This is the best latex mattress in Canada for 2024 when it comes to organic options. Each layer of the mattress uses materials certified by the GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) and the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). This mattress is also 100% certified nontoxic, biodegradable, vegan, and cruelty-free. You can rest easy knowing that this mattress is safe and eco-conscious.

This mattress uses four layers of clean, supportive materials to keep you comfortable as you sleep. Every layer contributes to the mattress’s allergy-friendly design. Even those with latex allergies can enjoy the way this mattress feels, as the lack of latex proteins won’t trigger your allergies.

The cover on the Essentia Stratami Organic Mattress is GOTS-certified organic cotton. This cover is soft, smooth, and completely hypoallergenic. It zips off when it’s time to wash your bedding. This allows you to keep your sleeping space as fresh and clean as you want. The first layer is a nontoxic flame barrier. While most mattresses use flame-resistant chemicals to keep you safe, Essentia uses a Kevlar fabric that reduces allergies and acts as a natural firewall. This means that the rest of the mattress is free of these flame-resistant chemicals.

The first layer of foam is Stratami’s unique dome-shaped organic latex. With small perforations and channels running along each dome, this layer can help support you and eliminate pressure points. The channels also help keep you cool if you sleep hot. The core of the mattress is a unique latex support core that helps align your body and provides ideal back support for most sleepers. This mattress is medium when it comes to firmness, meaning it’s ideal for side sleepers. Some stomach sleepers may also find it comfortable and supportive.

Key Features

  • Dome-Shaped Comfort Layer. A layer of organic latex foam helps eliminate pressure points and provides maximum breathability and airflow. The dome shape is unique to Essentia.
  • Wool Free. While most organic mattresses use wool in some capacity, the Essentia Stratami uses only cotton and layers of organic latex. Those with wool allergies can sleep better on this mattress.
  • Allergy Friendly. With no fibre batting, wool, or chemicals found in latex, this mattress is great for those with allergies and asthma. The completely hypoallergenic design makes it ideal for most sleepers.
  • Certified Organic. Every layer of this mattress is certified with either GOLS or GOTS, so you know that you are getting the most transparent materials possible.

How We Tested These Organic Mattresses for Canadians

Our team has years of experience in the sleep field. We approached each mattress with a plan to evaluate them thoroughly, including lab tests, sleep trials, and tester options. We looked at all of the data collected over our weeks of testing and synthesized it to bring you our best recommendations. As we evaluated, we looked at these performance areas:

  • Materials. Materials are one of the most important parts of an organic mattress. We wanted to make sure that every layer of the mattress was organic, sustainable, and eco-conscious. We examined the composition of each of our mattresses to bring you the best, healthiest options.
  • Temperature Control. It’s not uncommon for Canadians to wake up feeling hot or overheated. Some foam mattresses can make this effect worse, which is why we looked for mattresses with temperature control features. Even organic mattresses can be cooler!
  • Pressure Relief. Pressure relief ensures that you don’t wake up uncomfortable. We evaluated each mattress based on how well it dealt with pressure, and how comfortable it felt after long periods of resting in the same position.
  • Motion Isolation. Many Canadians share a bed. Whether you’re sharing with a partner, your kids, or your pets, motion isolation is important. You don’t want to wake up every time someone moves. That’s why we looked for mattresses that offer better motion isolation than competitors.
Why Choose an Organic Mattress

Why Choose an Organic Mattress?

It can be difficult to pinpoint why you should purchase an organic mattress. While organic foods and cleaners make sense, some might have trouble identifying the benefits of an organic mattress. The great news is that there are a ton of benefits that might make an organic mattress the right choice for you. Here are just some of the benefits of an organic mattress.

Made Without Harmful Chemicals and VOCs

Organic mattresses are produced differently. The organic materials within the mattresses are processed differently than some of the materials used in standard memory foam mattresses. As a result, they don’t contain many of the same pesticides, dyes, or treatment washes as other mattresses. If this is a concern for you or your family, an organic mattress might be the perfect solution.

VOCs, or Volatile Organic Compounds, are gasses that mattresses made in traditional ways can sometimes off-gas. Some VOCs can be bad for your health. Thankfully, organic mattresses don’t have a lot of the VOCs that traditional mattresses can have.

100% Hypoallergenic

Organic mattresses are usually comprised of wool, latex, and other natural foams. Of course, some people have latex allergies. However, the latex used in organic mattresses is made without the chemicals used in other mattresses. As a result, organic mattresses are usually 100% hypoallergenic, even for those who are sensitive to the materials in other mattresses.

Sustainable Materials and Low Impact

All of the materials used in organic mattresses are sustainably sourced. If sustainability and low environmental impact are important for you, consider an organic mattress. Organic cotton, organic wool, sustainable wood, and latex are recyclable, biodegradable, and don’t contribute to pollution.

More Customization Options

Organic mattresses might be assembled to order. Based on the one you choose, you might have the option to make your mattress a custom height or to add customized firmness options to help you and your partner sleep better. Even if you have different preferences, some organic mattress companies can help you customize each side of your mattress.

No Off-Gassing

Organic mattresses do not use glues, adhesives, flame-retardant coatings, or other treatments. Because of this, organic mattresses don’t have any off-gassing. Your indoor air quality may suffer for an initial period with a new traditional mattress, but an organic mattress avoids this problem altogether.

How to Choose an Organic Mattress for Canadians

There are fewer organic mattresses on the Canadian market than other types. However, the same preferences, features, and options apply whether you choose an organic mattress or not. It’s important to understand these basic features so you can choose an organic mattress in Canada that is right for you.

Mattress Type

Before you can choose a mattress, you should know what type of mattress you need. The following mattress options are available in Canada.

  • All foam mattresses are made with memory foam, latex, or both. These foams contour to your body, delivering customized support based on where your body heat is centred. Because of the way these materials react to your body heat, they can sometimes retain heat.
  • Hybrid mattresses provide the best foam and innerspring mattresses. You get the comfortable contouring of a foam mattress, but it’s supported by a layer of pocketed coil springs. These springs help isolate motion better than an innerspring mattress because they compress individually.
  • Innerspring mattresses are a more traditional mattress type. Layers of fabrics and fill cover a layer of interconnected springs. The entire spring layer compresses at once in response to weight, so you get great support. At the same time, you can feel anything that happens on the bed because of poor motion isolation.

Some of these mattress types may appeal to certain sleepers, so make sure to research which mattress type is best for you. Keep in mind that innerspring mattresses are generally not sold online, because they cannot be compressed into a small box like foam and hybrid mattresses can. As a result, innerspring mattresses will need to be purchased at a brick-and-mortar mattress retailer.

Firmness

Firmness preference is personal. Often, your firmness preference is determined by how you sleep, but it doesn’t have to be. There is a general scale that most mattress companies use to tell you how firm a mattress is. If you know what you prefer, it can be simple to find a mattress that feels exactly the way you want.

The simple version of the scale starts with softer mattresses. Medium-soft and medium mattresses are next, followed by medium-firm and firm mattresses. Medium and medium-firm mattresses are some of the most popular, as they appeal to the widest range of Canadians. If you aren’t sure what firmness you prefer, you can start by looking at your body type and sleeping position.

Body Type and Sleeping Position

Body type and sleeping position can be tied to the firmness you prefer. While these guidelines don’t guarantee that you’ll like a mattress of a certain firmness, it’s a great place to start if you aren’t sure which firmness level you’ll like most.

  • Soft mattresses are great for lighter sleepers and stomach sleepers.
  • Medium mattresses are great for standard sleepers and side sleepers.
  • Firm mattresses are great for heavier sleepers and back sleepers.

As we mentioned, it’s important to take your personal preferences into account when you shop for a mattress. Though you have a certain body type or sleep in a certain position, you may not prefer the same firmness as others. Testing out different mattress firmnesses can help you choose the one that helps you sleep most comfortably.

Materials

Each mattress uses a variety of different layers and materials to create certain feels and features. But what’s really used inside your mattress? When you’re looking at an organic mattress, you can expect to see organic latex, natural memory foam, and layers of sustainably-sourced natural cotton or wool. While materials like springs aren’t organic, they can be used in a ‘natural’ mattress to provide a bit of extra support.

Most online mattresses provide information about the materials used in every layer of the mattress. If you know you are sensitive to a certain material, you should look for it here. Make sure to check the list of materials here for your own research purposes.

Certifications

When it comes to organic mattresses, certifications are important. You want to make sure that all of the materials used in the mattress are certified organic, and that they meet certain standards for sustainability. There are a few different certifications that can tell you that a mattress is truly organic, including USDA Organic certifications, Global Organic Textile Standard, and Global Organic Latex Standard. While a mattress might have other certifications, these are some of the most important for organic mattresses.

Organic Mattress Performance

Organic Mattress Performance

Once you know all you can about the basics of each mattress, you should look at performance features. As we performed our evaluations on each of the mattresses on our list, we found different common areas that could make your life (and your sleep) a little easier. As you shop for a new organic mattress, keep an eye on the following performance features.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is integral for comfort. You want your mattress to relieve the pressure that may build up as you sleep, reducing discomfort and fighting the conditions that create uncomfortable pressure points. Mattresses with great pressure relief include softer foams or fill layers. These layers cradle your body, giving you support where you need it and reducing pressure on other parts of your body.

Always check how a mattress relieves pressure. You can look at the materials used, the construction, or other user reviews to determine how well a particular mattress might relieve pressure.

Temperature Control

Foam mattresses can retain heat, and a lot of Canadians sleep hot already. While organic mattresses can be less likely to retain heat than traditional foam mattresses, we still looked for the coolest mattresses on the market. If you often wake up sweating, overheating, or uncomfortable, a mattress with cooling features might be right for you.

Options for temperature control vary. The most popular (and effective) are those that include gel foams, latex, perforated foams, and open-cell foams. Foam layers or coil layers with breathable, open spacing can help as well. In organic mattresses, a layer of wool generally helps to keep overheating down.

Motion Isolation

If you sleep with a partner, you know that motion isolation is extremely important. Light sleepers might wake if their partner is restless, or if they often get in and out of bed throughout the night. Foam mattresses are better at isolating motion than other types, including organic foams.

Still, look for an all-foam mattress for the best results. Of course, mattresses with pocket coils can also help isolate motion because of the way they compress. Open-cell foams can help capture motion as it happens, making it less likely to transfer to the other side of the mattress. Likewise, mattresses with a thick transition layer can be effective.

Support

A supportive mattress is a personal choice. How much support each person needs varies wildly. However, you should have some idea of how much support you prefer. Look for a hybrid mattress if you need more rigid support, for example. A mattress with zoned support can provide better lumbar support if you need it, for instance. Always take a look at the mattress’s support layer, especially if you need a little extra help.

Buying an Organic Mattress Online in Canada

If you’ve never purchased a mattress online before, it can seem daunting. However, ordering a mattress online is a much easier process than choosing one from a physical location. With better sleep trials, fewer transportation issues, and lower prices, purchasing a mattress online can be a much better experience than purchasing from a brick-and-mortar mattress store. Here are just some of the benefits of choosing an online mattress.

  • No salespeople. Salespeople mean well, but they can ultimately make a huge impact on which mattress you decide to purchase. When buying online, you can take as much time as possible to read reviews, and features, and examine the construction of each mattress you’re considering.
  • No expensive overhead. Physical locations often have high overheads to meet – the cost of keeping a physical location, for instance. Because of this, they sometimes mark their prices up to cover the overhead. Purchasing mattresses online can be less expensive because there are fewer expensive overhead fees.
  • No transportation issues. You don’t have to pay expensive delivery fees or borrow someone’s truck to bring your mattress home. When you purchase a mattress online, shipping and delivery to your door are free in most locations.
  • Longer sleep trials. Instead of trying a mattress for just a few minutes, you’ll get the opportunity to try your mattress during a risk-free, at-home sleep trial. This can help you choose a mattress that will work better for you.
  • Sales and offers. While retailers often have sales, buying online gives you a slight price advantage. Outside of the already lower prices, manufacturer websites often have sales, coupons, and offers you can take advantage of to save money.

Sleep Trials

When you purchase a mattress in a brick-and-mortar store, you’ll only get a few moments to lay down on it. During this time, you’ll have to decide if it’s the mattress you want to sleep on for the next 10 years.

When you purchase a mattress online, however, you’ll have access to a longer sleep trial. Most risk-free trials last between 60 and 120 nights. During this time, you can try the mattress and see if it works for you. If it doesn’t work for you, you can return the mattress within this timeframe and get all of your money back.

A sleep trial takes a lot of stress off of your shoulders. You don’t have to make the right decision right away. Returns are free, and your used mattresses are recycled or donated where possible. That’s a relief!

Unboxing

The process of buying a mattress online can be a bit more challenging than choosing a brick-and-mortar retailer. However, there are several reasons why it’s a better option. One of these is the delivery method. Instead of looking for someone to help you move your new mattress from the store to your home, online mattresses are shipped right to your door.

To do this effectively and without paying expensive shipping costs, companies compress their mattresses and roll them up. The box you receive at your door may be smaller than what you expect. Unboxing isn’t difficult, either.

To unbox your mattress, simply move it to the room where you’ll be using it. You should already have your foundation set up before you unbox your mattress.

Place the box on your foundation and open it. Slide the mattress roll out onto the foundation and discard the box – then begin cutting the compression plastic surrounding the mattress. As soon as you cut into the plastic, the mattress will begin decompressing.

It may take some time for the mattress to expand to its full size. Once you remove the plastic, arrange the mattress on the foundation. It can take up to 48 hours for the mattress to reach the size you need, and you shouldn’t use it during this time.

Because organic mattresses are manufactured without harmful chemicals, you won’t have to worry about off-gassing. An organic mattress won’t irritate your allergies or asthma, so ventilation isn’t necessary. After the first 48 hours have passed, you are free to use your new mattress!

Frequently Asked Questions

Most of the organic mattresses on our list are made in Canada. The GhostBed Natural is the only exception, as it is made in both the US and Canada. Most Canadian GhostBed mattresses are assembled domestically, but the materials may still come from the US.

Because of the way they are made (and the certifications that a mattress needs to be certified as an organic product), they are hypoallergenic. While non-organic mattress may contain materials that trigger allergic reactions, you should be allergy-free with an organic mattress.

An organic mattress uses non-toxic materials. The materials used in every part of the mattress should be certified as organic and free of any toxic or harmful chemicals. Organic mattresses cannot use synthetic materials and must be 100% natural in order to be considered organic.

There are a few essential certifications to look for when choosing an organic mattress. These include:

  • USDA Organic Certification
  • Global Organic Textile Standard (for mattresses that include cotton)
  • Global Organic Latex Standard (for latex mattresses only)

While there are other certifications on the market, these are some of the most important to look for.

Organic mattresses that use latex as a material often have a stronger smell than memory foam and non-organic latex mattresses. That’s because the rubber used in organic latex mattresses in Canada don’t include masking agents and other chemicals to dilute the purity of the rubber. This can lead to a more intense off-gassing odour than non-organic mattresses, but it is harmless.

Traditional memory foam mattresses last between 7 to 10 years on average. An organic mattress made with natural materials (especially natural latex) are notably more durable. If you rotate the mattress often and avoid deeper indents, 100% natural latex mattresses can last up to 25 years without sagging or losing durability.
