An organic mattress can provide many health benefits and help you improve the way you sleep overall. Organic mattresses are made differently, and it definitely shows when it comes to how they feel. While the Canadian market doesn’t boast many organic mattresses, these recommendations really stood out to us.

Every mattress we’re recommending to you has gone through rigorous testing procedures. We put each mattress through a gauntlet of lab tests, tester trials, and a few different rounds of evaluation. After putting these results together, we can confidently recommend the following mattress for eco-conscious Canadians.

These are our top recommendations for the best organic mattresses in Canada

Each of the mattresses we recommended was placed on our list for a reason. Most stand out from the crowd in at least one category, which definitely helped us decide. We compared evaluations from our testing crew with our own tests and notes to arrive at the recommendations on our list. Here are why these mattresses made the cut.

The GhostBed Natural Mattress is the best organic mattress overall. It has enough features for most that want an organic feel, with the added support of a firm hybrid. GhostBed Natural is the only bed on our list to use wool for temperature control, which is appealing for some sleepers.

Essentia’s Stratami Organic mattress is the best latex-only option on our list. While some mattresses use other materials to create a different feel, Stratami sticks to an all-natural latex approach. The result is a cool, responsive mattress.

On the other hand, Essentia’s Tatami Organic mattress features a memory foam-focused construction. Essentia’s unique natural memory foam cradles your body, preventing pressure points and keeping you comfortable throughout the night.

The Essentia Classic 8 features some of the best pressure relief on the organic mattress market. Canadians who need deeper alignment and pressure relief (particularly side sleepers) will find that this mattress meets all of their needs.

Finally, the Essentia Dormeuse mattress is the coolest on our list. On average, it sleeps about 7 degrees cooler than a standard mattress. In some cases, this can keep you much more comfortable and interrupt your sleep less.

GhostBed Natural Mattress

Features:

Type: Hybrid
Firmness: Medium

GhostBed Natural Mattress

It’s Great For:

  • Canadians who sleep hot
  • Those who need a responsive sleep surface
  • Sleepers who want a supportive hybrid mattress with organic materials
  • Most sleeping positions due to the medium firmness

The GhostBed Natural Mattress blends luxury materials, eco-friendly construction, and a cooling feel to create a mattress that feels great all the way around. It uses natural latex, sustainable wool, and organic cotton together with a layer of dense springs. It’s a durable mattress that offers great support and eco-conscious pressure relief.

GhostBed Natural’s cover is made of luxurious organic cotton. It’s toxin and chemical-free and certified organic by the USDA. Underneath is an insulating layer of natural wool, which is both durable and cool. This layer works to disperse your body heat across the mattress, which spreads it out away from you. Wool also acts as a natural fire barrier, making this mattress a little bit safer.

The first latex layer is made of natural Talalay. This particular type of latex is bouncy but contours well, so you can say goodbye to your pressure points. This layer doesn’t let you sink too far into the mattress, and also provides some great motion isolation for couples.

The coil layer is next. These 8” coils help produce a weightless feel, compressing individually to give you support right where you need it. These coils are surrounded by a double layer of smaller springs, which provide better edge support than most foam mattresses. Their Spirited Edge support system makes it easy to sit or sleep near the edge without feeling like you might slip off the bed.

Finally, the last layer is a thin, durable Dunlop latex. This last layer helps the mattress maintain support, as well as prevents it from sagging over time. Together, these materials create one of the best organic hybrid mattresses we’ve seen.

The Highlights

The GhostBed Natural Mattress features layers of organic wool, cotton, and two different types of latex to create a cool, comfortable organic experience. It contours close to your body to help relieve pressure points and provide support where you need it. The natural wool layers help move your body heat across the mattress, ensuring that it doesn’t build up under you while you sleep. The edge support coils help keep the same level of support across the mattress, so you don’t sink or slide near the edge of the bed.

  • Wool, cotton, and two types of latex
  • Contours closely to your body to relieve pressure
  • Uses natural wool to reduce body heat
  • Edge support coils reduce sinking or sliding near the edge of the bed

From the Test Lab

“We’ve never tried an organic mattress that’s this supportive! Our testers loved it, particularly those who needed better edge support in a mattress.”

Essentia Stratami Organic Mattress

Features:

Type: All foam
Firmness: Firm
Sleep Trial: 120 nights
Warranty: 20 years
Made In: Canada

Stratami Mattress

It’s Great For:

  • Canadians with allergies
  • Those who have asthma or sensitivity to off-gassing
  • Sleepers who often wake with pressure points
  • Sleepers who own adjustable bases

Essentia is one of the largest manufacturers of organic mattresses in Canada. Their Stratami is their most popular model. It’s a Lifestyle model, which means it provides some basic features at a more affordable price than some of its other categories. Stratami is also Essentia’s only all-latex mattress. Aside from the cover, no other foams are used in the construction of this mattress.

The Stratami is completely hypoallergenic and fully vegan. Each of the materials used inside is sustainable, ethically sourced, and eco-conscious. The cover can be removed to be washed, and it’s made with 100% Global Organic Textile Standard certified organic cotton. It’s fully removable via the zipper, so you can refresh your bed whenever you need it.

Inside, you’ll find a Bucaneve liner. This organic fabric helps keep the foam layers together, preventing them from becoming damaged or sliding around while the cover is removed. Within this liner are two layers of latex foam.

The first is an Essentia exclusive. The dome-shaped natural latex helps contour your body, with extra airflow to prevent overheating. This type of domed design isn’t used by any other mattress company on the market, but it provides a comfortable, supportive top layer with great pressure relief.

The support core is a 5-inch layer of natural latex, which helps you sink comfortably without forming hard pressure points. It presents the right amount of spinal alignment, so you can wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go.

The Highlights

The Essentia Stratami is a durable, long-lasting mattress made with organic latex. While other organic mattresses use wool, coils, or other types of foam, Stratami only uses latex. This creates a firm mattress that is still bouncy and responsive, perfect for combination sleepers. The firmness is perfect for those who need extra support, including those with chronic health concerns and heavier sleepers.

  • Durable and long-lasting mattress
  • Bouncy and responsive
  • Firm enough for most sleepers who need extra support
  • Every layer is made with organic latex

From the Test Lab

“The Stratami is simple, but it feels great. It’s cool and comfortable. Our testers could tell the difference between this mattress and traditional foams!”

  • Those who want the comforting cushion of memory foam
  • Canadians with dust allergies
  • Those who need a temperature-neutral mattresses
  • Health-conscious and eco-conscious Canadians

The Essentia Tatami is another Lifestyle mattress from the company, but it comes at a much more budget-friendly price. Instead of two layers of latex foam inside the liner, you’ll find a layer of comforting memory foam and a thicker latex support core. Together, these components create a pressure-free, temperature-neutral experience that works well for most Canadians.

The Tatami also starts with a soft organic cotton cover. It’s completely hypoallergenic, and the fabrics can’t support dust mites. If you have issues with dust allergies, this might be the perfect option for you. This organic cotton is certified by the USDA and the Global Organic Textile Standard, which is how you know it’s going to be perfectly comfortable.

Under the zip-off, machine-washable cover is a bucaneve liner. This liner is also sustainably-produced. It helps to keep the layers of foam inside from being damaged while the cotton cover is in the wash. Inside is a thin layer of Essentia’s patented natural memory foam, which is made differently from any other memory foam on the market right now.

This thin layer of cushioned memory foam lays just above a 7” layer of natural Hevea latex, which helps support your body and keep you aligned. Even though this is the last layer in the mattress, you’ll stay elevated out of the mattress. Every pressure point will find relief. Most sleepers will appreciate the way this mattress feels, especially as it moves into firmer support.

The Highlights

The Essentia Tatami uses latex for support but has layers of pressure-relieving natural memory foam to keep you comfortable. This firm mattress has increased support for those that need a little extra help, but it’s also extremely contouring due to these memory foam layers. Because it doesn’t use wool or fill, the mattress is impervious to dust mites. This is great for Canadians with allergies. Finally, it comes at a great price. The Tatami is one of Essentia’s Lifestyle models, which means they have basic, no-nonsense features at a friendly price.

  • Uses latex for support, but keeps the comfort of memory foam
  • Firm mattress for increased support
  • Impervious to dust mites
  • Comes at a great price

From the Test Lab

“The Tatami stands apart as one of the most supportive organic options we found. The unique natural memory foam layer is perfectly balanced by the latex.”

  • Canadians who overheat often
  • Those who need better spinal alignment, like side sleepers
  • Sleepers who want a little more pressure relief
  • Couples and co-sleepers

Essentia’s Classic 8 Mattress is in their Performance category. The layers of latex and natural memory foam create a comforting surface with optimal support, balancing, and circulation support, as well as a cooler approach than some of Essentia’s other mattresses. The Classic 8 was one of the first mattresses that Essentia made, and they’ve only improved on the formula over the years.

Classic 8 is completely non-toxic, like every other Essentia mattress. It features two layers of foam wrapped in a Bucaneve inner cover, with a Global Organic Textile Standard organic cotton cover keeping it all together. This cover can be zipped off and washed, and the Bucaneve underneath is durable enough to keep the foam inside protected.

Inside, you’ll find a 2-inch layer of Essentia’s patented high-density memory foam. This molded foam produces a quick-rising memory foam feel, without any of the sinking feelings you might expect from traditional memory foam. Underneath, a layer of Natural Hevea latex keeps you fully supported, providing a responsive, bouncy surface that protects your pressure points.

But this mattress also provides a cooler feel. Due to the way, it’s constructed, it sleeps about 3 degrees cooler than other mattresses with similar construction. It also provides the best pressure relief on our list, with better spinal support than the other mattresses we’ve seen so far.

The Highlights

The Essentia Classic 8 is a performance mattress. It features a firm support core, which provides full-body balance and spinal alignment. This support model is best for side sleepers, who need the extra alignment to sleep more comfortably. This cooler mattress sleeps about 3 degrees cooler than traditional mattresses, which helps prevent overheating. Even the support core features perforated foams, which help move heat away from you and wick away moisture.

  • Firm support core for better balance and alignment
  • Perfect for side sleepers
  • It Sleeps 3 degrees cooler than traditional mattresses
  • The cool support core features perforated foam and materials to wick away moisture

From the Test Lab

Essentia Dormeuse Organic Mattress

Features:

Type: All foam
Firmness: Medium-soft
Sleep Trial: 120 nights
Warranty: 20 years
Made In: Canada

It’s Great For:

  • Those who often wake up with discomfort
  • Canadians who sleep hot
  • Sleepers who wake up a lot during the night
  • Those who struggle with allergies

In Essentia’s three-tiered mattress system, the Dormeuse stands out. It’s a Wholebody Recovery mattress, meaning that it works to keep you asleep and comfortable for as long as possible. No matter what you’re recovering from (or resting after), this mattress works to ensure that you can give it your best shot when you wake up.

This mattress sleeps even cooler than the Classic 8. Over 8 hours of sleep, you can expect this mattress to consistently sleep about 7 degrees cooler than traditional memory foam. In addition to the better alignment and support, you’ll get from this mattress, you’ll also get a patented molded foam layer with quick-rise properties.

You’ll find Essentia’s standard organic cotton cover here, but this time the mattress is protected by a Kevlar liner. You can also upgrade this mattress, including a layer of Essentia’s EMF barrier protection, which aims to help circulation.

Beneath the durable Kevlar liner is the first layer of foam. This molded natural memory foam responds quickly, springing right back up after compressing. This makes it simple to move around and try a different sleeping location without putting more strain on your body. Next is a layer of natural memory foam, which is about 2 inches high and provides excellent contouring, support, and pressure relief. As with the other mattresses, the support core is a natural Hevea latex. However, this support core is a bit smaller, allowing for the other parts of the mattress to do their best work.

If you want a performance mattress that will help you recover and feel refreshed, the Essentia Dormeuse is the one for you.

The Highlights

The Essentia Dormeuse is one of Essentia’s most advanced mattresses. The layers work to balance comfort with muscle recovery and proper alignment, to ensure that you get the most restful sleep possible. It sleeps about 7 degrees cooler than a standard mattress, too – if you sleep hot, this is the model you’ll want to go for. This mattress is one of Essentia’s Wholebody Recovery models, which means it features the most features offered by the company. In this case, it also means that it can be customized with a layer of EMF Barrier Protection foam, which provides a unique grounding feature.

  • Balances comfort, recovery, and alignment
  • Sleeps up to 7 degrees cooler than a standard mattress
  • Wholebody Recovery mattress
  • Customizable with EMF foam

From the Test Lab

“The Dormeuse feels very different from every other Essentia mattress we looked at. It felt way cooler, and our side-sleeping testers reported major changes in how comfortable they slept.

Why Trust Us?

Our team has years of experience in the sleep field. We approached each mattress with a plan to evaluate them thoroughly, including lab tests, sleep trials, and tester options. We looked at all of the data collected over our weeks of testing and synthesized it to bring you our best recommendations. As we evaluated, we looked at these performance areas:

  • Materials. Materials are one of the most important parts of an organic mattress. We wanted to make sure that every layer of the mattress was organic, sustainable, and eco-conscious. We examined the composition of each of our mattresses to bring you the best, healthiest options.
  • Temperature Control. It’s not uncommon for Canadians to wake up feeling hot or overheated. Some foam mattresses can make this effect worse, which is why we looked for mattresses with temperature control features. Even organic mattresses can be cooler!
  • Pressure Relief. Pressure relief ensures that you don’t wake up uncomfortable. We evaluated each mattress based on how well it dealt with pressure, and how comfortable it felt after long periods of resting in the same position.
  • Motion Isolation. Many Canadians share a bed. Whether you’re sharing with a partner, your kids, or your pets, motion isolation is important. You don’t want to wake up every time someone moves. That’s why we looked for mattresses that offer better motion isolation than competitors.

Why Choose an Organic Mattress?

It can be difficult to pinpoint why you should purchase an organic mattress. While organic foods and cleaners make sense, some might have trouble identifying the benefits of an organic mattress. The great news is that there are a ton of benefits that might make an organic mattress the right choice for you. Here are just some of the benefits of an organic mattress.

Made Without Harmful Chemicals

Organic mattresses are produced differently. The organic materials within the mattresses are processed differently than some of the materials used in standard memory foam mattresses. As a result, they don’t contain many of the same pesticides, dyes, or treatment washes as other mattresses. If this is a concern for you or your family, an organic mattress might be the perfect solution.

100% Hypoallergenic

Organic mattresses are usually comprised of wool, latex, and other natural foams. Of course, some people have latex allergies. However, the latex used in organic mattresses is made without the chemicals used in other mattresses. As a result, organic mattresses are usually 100% hypoallergenic, even for those who are sensitive to the materials in other mattresses.

Lower VOCs

VOCs, or Volatile Organic Compounds, are gasses that mattresses made in traditional ways can sometimes off-gas. Some VOCs can be bad for your health. Thankfully, organic mattresses don’t have a lot of the VOCs that traditional mattresses can have.

Sustainable Materials and Low Impact

All of the materials used in organic mattresses are sustainably sourced. If sustainability and low environmental impact are important for you, consider an organic mattress. Organic cotton, organic wool, sustainable wood, and latex are recyclable, biodegradable, and don’t contribute to pollution.

More Customization Options

Organic mattresses might be assembled to order. Based on the one you choose, you might have the option to make your mattress a custom height or to add customized firmness options to help you and your partner sleep better. Even if you have different preferences, some organic mattress companies can help you customize each side of your mattress.

No Off-Gassing

Organic mattresses do not use glues, adhesives, flame-retardant coatings, or other treatments. Because of this, organic mattresses don’t have any off-gassing. Your indoor air quality may suffer for an initial period with a new traditional mattress, but an organic mattress avoids this problem altogether.

How to Choose an Organic Mattress for Canadians

There are fewer options for organic mattresses on the Canadian market than other types. However, it’s still important to understand some mattress basics before you make a purchase.

Mattress Type

Before you choose a mattress, you should understand the basic mattress types available on the Canadian market.

  • All-foam mattresses are made with memory foam, latex, or both. These foams contour to your body, delivering customized support based on where your body heat is centered. Because of the way these materials react to your body heat, they can sometimes retain heat.
  • Hybrid mattresses provide the best foam and innerspring mattresses. You get the comfortable contouring of a foam mattress, but it’s supported by a layer of pocketed coil springs. These springs help isolate motion better than an innerspring mattress because they compress individually.
  • Innerspring mattresses are a more traditional mattress type. Layers of fabrics and fill cover a layer of interconnected springs. The entire spring layer compresses at once in response to weight, so you get great support. At the same time, you can feel anything that happens on the bed because of poor motion isolation.

Firmness

Firmness preference is personal. Often, your firmness preference is determined by how you sleep, but it doesn’t have to be. There is a general scale that most mattress companies use to tell you how firm a mattress is. If you know what you prefer, it can be simple to find a mattress that feels exactly the way you want.

The simple version of the scale is as follows:

  • Soft
  • Medium-soft
  • Medium
  • Medium-firm
  • Firm

Body Type and Sleeping Position

Body type and sleeping position can be tied to the firmness you prefer. While these guidelines don’t guarantee that you’ll like a mattress of a certain firmness, it’s a great place to start if you aren’t sure which firmness level you’ll like most.

  • Soft mattresses are great for lighter sleepers and stomach sleepers.
  • Medium mattresses are great for standard sleepers and side sleepers.
  • Firm mattresses are great for heavier sleepers and back sleepers.

Materials

Each mattress uses a variety of different layers and materials to create certain feels and features. But what’s really used inside your mattress? When you’re looking at an organic mattress, you can expect to see organic latex, natural memory foam, and layers of sustainably-sourced natural cotton or wool. While materials like springs aren’t organic, they can be used in a ‘natural’ mattress to provide a bit of extra support.

Most online mattresses provide information about the materials used in every layer of the mattress. If you know you are sensitive to a certain material, you should look for it here. Make sure to check the list of materials here for your own research purposes.

Certifications

When it comes to organic mattresses, certifications are important. You want to make sure that all of the materials used in the mattress are certified organic, and that they meet certain standards for sustainability. There are a few different certifications that can tell you that a mattress is truly organic, including USDA Organic certifications, Global Organic Textile Standard, and Global Organic Latex Standard. While a mattress might have other certifications, these are some of the most important for organic mattresses.

Organic Mattress Performance

Once you have the basic options down, you should look at how the mattress performs. When we evaluated the mattresses on our list, we chose a few different categories to assess.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is integral for comfort. You want your mattress to relieve the pressure that may build up as you sleep, reducing discomfort and fighting the conditions that create uncomfortable pressure points. Mattresses with great pressure relief include softer foams or fill layers. These layers cradle your body, giving you support where you need it and reducing pressure on other parts of your body.

Always check how a mattress relieves pressure. You can look at the materials used, the construction, or other user reviews to determine how well a particular mattress might relieve pressure.

Temperature Control

Foam mattresses can retain heat, and a lot of Canadians sleep hot already. While organic mattresses can be less likely to retain heat than traditional foam mattresses, we still looked for the coolest mattresses on the market. If you often wake up sweating, overheated, or uncomfortable, a mattress with cooling features might be right for you.

Options for temperature control vary. The most popular (and effective) are those that include gel foams, latex, perforated foams, and open-cell foams. Foam layers or coil layers with breathable, open spacing can help as well. In organic mattresses, a layer of wool generally helps to keep overheating down.

Motion Isolation

If you sleep with a partner, you know that motion isolation is extremely important. Light sleepers might wake if their partner is restless, or if they often get in and out of bed throughout the night. Foam mattresses are better at isolating motion than other types, including organic foams.

Still, look for an all-foam mattress with no coil layer for best results. Open-cell foams can help capture motion as it happens, making it less likely to transfer to the other side of the mattress. Likewise, mattresses with a thick transition layer can be effective.

Support

A supportive mattress is a personal choice. How much support each person needs varies wildly. However, you should have some idea of how much support you prefer. Look for a hybrid mattress if you need more rigid support, for example. A mattress with zoned support can provide better lumbar support if you need it, for instance. Always take a look at the mattress’s support layer, especially if you need a little extra help.

Buying an Organic Mattress Online in Canada

If you’ve never purchased a mattress online before, it can seem daunting. However, ordering a mattress online is a much easier process than choosing one from a physical location. Here are just some of the benefits of choosing an online mattress.

  • No salespeople. Salespeople mean well, but they can ultimately make a huge impact on which mattress you decide to purchase. When buying online, you can take as much time as possible to read reviews, and features, and examine the construction of each mattress you’re considering.
  • No expensive overhead. Physical locations often have high overheads to meet – the cost of keeping a physical location, for instance. Because of this, they sometimes mark their prices up to cover the overhead. Purchasing mattresses online can be less expensive because there are fewer expensive overheads.
  • No transportation issues. You don’t have to pay expensive delivery fees or borrow someone’s truck to bring your mattress home. When you purchase a mattress online, shipping and delivery to your door are free in most locations.
  • Longer sleep trials. Instead of trying a mattress for just a few minutes, you’ll get the opportunity to try your mattress during a risk-free, at-home sleep trial. This can help you choose a mattress that will work better for you.
  • More information is available. As stated above, there’s much more information online about any mattress you’re considering. You can read reviews, and user testimonials, and check multiple websites to find out so much more about your mattress.
  • Sales and offers. While retailers often have sales, buying online gives you a slight price advantage. Outside of the already lower prices, manufacturer websites often have sales, coupons, and offers you can take advantage of to save money.

Sleep Trials

When you purchase a mattress in a brick-and-mortar store, you’ll only get a few moments to lay down on it. During this time, you’ll have to decide if it’s the mattress you want to sleep on for the next 10 years.

When you purchase a mattress online, however, you’ll have access to a longer sleep trial. Most risk-free trials last between 60 and 120 nights. During this time, you can try the mattress and see if it works for you. If it doesn’t work for you, you can return the mattress within this timeframe and get all of your money back.

A sleep trial takes a lot of stress off of your shoulders. You don’t have to make the right decision right away. Returns are free, and your used mattresses are recycled or donated where possible. That’s a relief!

Unboxing

The process of buying a mattress online can be a bit more challenging than choosing a brick-and-mortar retailer. However, there are several reasons why it’s a better option. One of these is the delivery method. Instead of looking for someone to help you move your new mattress from the store to your home, online mattresses are shipped right to your door.

To do this effectively and without paying expensive shipping costs, companies compress their mattresses and roll them up. The box you receive at your door may be smaller than what you expect. Unboxing isn’t difficult, either.

To unbox your mattress, simply move it to the room where you’ll be using it. You should already have your foundation set up before you unbox your mattress.

Place the box on your foundation and open it. Slide the mattress roll out onto the foundation and discard the box – then begin cutting the compression plastic surrounding the mattress. As soon as you cut into the plastic, the mattress will begin decompressing.

It may take some time for the mattress to expand to its full size. Once you remove the plastic, arrange the mattress on the foundation. It can take up to 48 hours for the mattress to reach the size you need, and you shouldn’t use it during this time.

Because organic mattresses are manufactured without harmful chemicals, you won’t have to worry about off-gassing. An organic mattress won’t irritate your allergies or asthma, so ventilation isn’t necessary. After the first 48 hours have passed, you are free to use your new mattress!
