Best Mattress Reviews for Canadians

Why Did We Choose These Mattresses in Canada?

Each of the mattresses on our list was chosen for a reason. As we evaluated our options, each of our recommendations stood out for its specific characteristics. Here’s why each mattress ended up on our list.

Silk & Snow’s Hybrid Mattress is one of the best mattresses in Canada. This option uses strong support coils, comforting foam layers, and cooling features to improve nearly every aspect of your sleep.

The Douglas Mattress is the best mattress on our list for pressure relief. This all-foam mattress solves most issues that customers usually have with memory foam mattresses but still provides the comforting ‘hug’ that Canadians seek from memory foam options.

Do you sleep with a restless partner? The Endy Mattress might be the perfect option for you. Its open-cell foam layers are engineered to isolate motion as best as possible.

The Novosbed Mattress provides the best firmness options on our list. With three basic firmness options and a topper system that can further customize the way the mattress feels, you’ll be able to make this mattress perfect for you.

The Logan & Cove Luxury Pillow-Top Mattress is the best pillow-top on our list. The separate pillowtop section provides a plush, comfortable surface to sleep on, as well as great pressure relief.

While most of the mattresses on our list tend towards a medium firmness, the Noa Mattress is pretty firm. This mattress provides zoned support that still isn’t uncomfortable for most sleepers.

The Casper Original Mattress is Casper’s all-foam flagship mattress. It features perforated foam, alongside zoned support foam layers. These additions make it the best all-foam mattress on our list.

When it comes to latex, the Recore Mattress does it best. This latex mattress is best for active Canadians who need time to rest before taking on the day. At the same time, it works to keep you asleep if you often wake up during the night.

Finally, the Brunswick Spring Mattress is the best hybrid on our list. The coil layer works perfectly with the pillow-top and foam layers to create a comfortable, supportive mattress.

Best Overall

Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress

Silk and Snow Hybrid Mattress

Features:

It's Great For:

The Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress is one of the best bed-in-a-box mattresses on the Canadian market. This mattress uses cooling foams, supportive coils, and eco-conscious foams to deliver a comforting experience that is comfortable for most sleepers. The medium-firm feel of this mattress makes it popular for most sleeping styles, but the way the mattress is constructed is comfortable for side sleepers, some stomach sleepers, and some who sleep on their back.

It’s also easy to move around on, which makes it a great option for combination sleepers. Because combination sleepers move around a lot at night, they need a mattress that doesn’t restrict them. Most memory foam mattresses will contour to your body, creating an indent that can trap you in a single position. This mattress makes turning over easy no matter how many times you do it.

This mattress uses two layers of foam and a layer of strong pocket coils. The first layer, a 1” quilted cooling gel foam, is attached to the cover with quilted lines that promote airflow. The foam itself also helps wick away moisture, keeping you cool even if you sleep hot. The middle layer is transitional. It helps with your deepest pressure points and absorbs motion, so the mattress won’t move too much when your partner tosses and turns.

The coil base is made with up to 1200 pocket coils depending on the size you choose. Regardless of size, this is more than enough pocket coils to provide great personalized support. The coils compress individually, mapping to your body and offering support right where you need it. A perimeter of edge support foam strengthens the edges, allowing you to sit at the edge of the bed in the morning without sinking or sliding.

It’s all wrapped in an antimicrobial cover that prevents the growth of bacteria and helps reduce allergens. Your bed will stay fresh and odour-free for longer because of this comfortable cover.

The Highlights

The Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress uses layers of eco-conscious foams. These foams are made with seed-based oils, so they don’t contain chemicals that can cause or trigger allergies. This mattress is compatible with any type of bed frame, including adjustable beds and platform beds. The soft pressure relief at the top of the mattress gives way to firm, zoned coil support. The edges have additional support as well, which prevents sinking and sliding at the edges of the mattress.

  • Eco-conscious foam layers are made without chemicals that cause and trigger allergies
  • Works with any type of bed frame
  • Soft pressure relief gives way to firm, zoned coil support
  • Firm edge support prevents sinking or collapse at the edge of the mattress

From the Test Lab

“This mattress offers everything we wanted from a bed-in-a-box mattress, from better pressure relief to firmer support. We loved trying it out during our sleep trial.”

Best Pressure Relief

The Douglas Mattress

The Douglas Mattress

Features:

It's Great For:

The Douglas Mattress is the best mattress on our list for pressure relief. Instead of providing a standard memory foam mattress, Douglas has taken their product a step further in every way. Regular memory foam mattresses usually receive a lot of complaints, from issues with overheating to a lack of support. However, the Douglas mattress addresses all of these issues in a comfortable, Canadian-made package.

Inside a sustainably-sourced Infinitex CoolSense cover, you’ll find two layers of eco-conscious foams. The first layer is a cooling gel known as ecoLight, which is made with 40% less carbon input than standard memory foam. It feels just as soft and comfortable, though! The second layer is Elastex, which is made without the chemicals that make people allergic to latex. This non-allergenic alternative won’t irritate those with latex allergies.

The entire mattress is supported by thick support foam, which helps keep the edges supported and eliminates motion transfer. It does all of this while balancing your body weight!

Try the Douglas Mattress for a risk-free 365-night sleeping trial. Afterward, the mattress is protected from major defects for up to 15 years!

The Highlights

The Douglas mattress includes two layers of eco-conscious foams to help you sleep a little easier. Both of these layers contribute to the responsive surface of the mattress. If you don’t like the quicksand feeling usually associated with memory foam, this is the perfect mattress for you. The Douglas mattress offers superior motion isolation for couples, while also reducing pressure at your custom pressure points. The temperature control foams help reduce the build-up of heat throughout the night.

  • Includes layers of eco-conscious foam for concerned Canadians
  • Responsive surface reduces the quicksand feeling of memory foam
  • Great motion isolation and custom pressure relief
  • Temperature control features help reduce heat throughout the night

From the Test Lab

“Testers in every sleeping position loved this mattress! With better temperature control than most memory foam options, it was a hit with everyone.”

Best for Couples

The Endy Mattress

The Endy Mattress

Features:

It's Great For:

Couples need motion isolation to sleep peacefully, especially if one is a light sleeper and the other is restless. Proper motion control is essential to allowing couples to sleep through the night, and the Endy mattress is happy to provide excellent motion isolation.

The open-cell memory foam actively works to eliminate motion in real-time. Each cell absorbs motion and doesn’t allow it to travel any further, ensuring that your partner on the other side of the bed stays asleep for longer. This mattress passed each motion test with flying colours, and it was one of the only mattresses with motion isolation this strong.

In addition, this all-foam mattress is temperature neutral. While most memory foam mattresses may feel different depending on the season (usually firmer in the winter and softer in the summer), this mattress maintains the same feel all year-round. If you live in a region of Canada with a lot of variable weather, this could be a great mattress to help you sleep more comfortably.

You can try it yourself during the risk-free 100-night sleep trial. A 10-year warranty protects the mattress and takes effect immediately after your purchase.

The Highlights

The Endy mattress is temperature-neutral, so the memory foam feels the same no matter what season it is. The layers of foam offer great lumbar support and proper spinal alignment, especially for side sleepers. The foam also helps with active motion isolation due to the open-cell foam design. This makes it a great option for couples and co-sleepers, especially those who sleep light. The foam offers a responsive surface that helps you move around easier throughout the night.

  • Temperature neutral for year-round comfortable
  • Great lumbar support and spinal alignment
  • Active motion isolation helps co-sleepers and couples
  • A responsive surface that helps you move around easily

From the Test Lab

“Endy’s active motion isolation was a blessing for some of our couples! The temperature-neutral foams also helped those who lived in more variable climates.”

There are three basic options for this open-cell, all-foam mattress. You can choose from basic soft, medium, or firm, depending on your preferences. If they aren’t right for you, you can request a Comfort+ topper kit. These kits allow you to make each of the firmness options firmer or softer depending on your preference. The difference is noticeable and allows for Novosbed to offer a full 9 custom firmness options.

Best Pillow-Top

Logan & Cove Luxury Pillow-Top Mattress

The Logan and Cove Mattress

Features:

It's Great For:

Logan & Cove’s Pillow-Top Mattress is a luxury mattress without the luxury price tag. This hybrid features layers of foam and fill to create a soft, comfortable surface to sleep on. Underneath, zoned coils help provide excellent support around your hips and waits, with softer coils near your shoulders to reduce pressure points and help you stay asleep.

Logan & Cove is the only hybrid bed-in-a-box mattress we found that features a separate pillow-top section. This section provides cushioning for your pressure points, forming your body with layers of memory foam. Cooling gel foam works to keep air flowing, so you aren’t uncomfortably warm as you sleep.

Top it all off with two different firmness options (medium plush and luxury firm), as well as a hand-tufted Tencel cover. This mattress is the cream of the crop, but don’t expect to pay premium prices for it. After purchase, you’ll get a risk-free 120-night trial and a 15-year warranty against defects in materials and manufacturing.

The Highlights

The Logan & Cove Luxury Pillow-Top Mattress has solid edge support, which helps those who like to sleep close to the edge. This foam perimeter offers edge-to-edge support for all sleepers. Best Firm

The Noa Mattress

The Noa Mattress

Features:

It's Great For:

The Noa Mattress is one of the firmest hybrids we tested. It’s a good option for those who need more support, better lumbar support, or generally prefer sleeping on a firmer surface. This medium-firm mattress uses Tencel fibres in the cover to help keep you cool, followed by layers of latex and cooling gel memory foam. These layers work together to keep you cool and support your pressure points.

At the same time, a layer of thick and sturdy pocket springs helps support you, evenly distributing your weight across the mattress for the most support possible. Though this mattress is a little on the firmer side, the layers of foam create a surface that’s just plush enough to be comfortable.

Finally, a layer of edge support foam helps keep those who sleep near the edge a little more comfortable. Altogether, this mattress fits the bill for most that prefer a firmer mattress, but it isn’t too firm for those who are still on the fence.

The Noa mattress features a 120-night sleep trial with the option of return or refund during that time frame. If you keep the mattress, you can expect a 15-year warranty for defects, and some of the most comfortable well-supported nights of sleep ever!

The Highlights

The Noa mattress is made with certified foam layers. It uses all types of available materials, including latex, memory foam, and coils. Each is used to great effect to create a comfortable, pressure-relieving mattress that is firm enough for most. The coil layer offers great lumbar support for those who need it. Overall, this mattress is much firmer than most of the others we looked at.

  • Certified foam layers
  • Uses latex, memory foam, and coils together
  • Coils offer outstanding lumbar support

Casper Original Mattress

Casper Original Mattress

Features:

It's Great For:

The Casper Original all-foam mattress blends temperature control and support into one premium, comfortable package. A layer of perforated foam helps circulate air, while a middle layer offers zoned support foam. Firmer foam under your hips and back help support those critical areas, which can be extremely useful for side sleepers especially.

At the same time, softer foam under your shoulders helps prevent pressure points. This helps you stay comfortable all over, regardless of how you sleep or what type of support you need.

These features work together to give you a unique sleeping experience. These extraordinary layers are perched on a layer of thick support foam, which helps to balance your body and gives you the support you need. Meanwhile, breathable AirScape foam prevents heat from building up, which ensures that you sleep better all the way around.

Those who often wake up sweaty and uncomfortable will love the increased airflow in this mattress. Best Latex

The Recore Mattress

Recore Mattress

Features:

It's Great For:

Recore is a latex mattress that aims to keep you asleep. If you stay asleep, your sleep cycle remains intact. As a result, you wake up ready to face another busy, active day. That’s where the Recore comes in. It uses graphite-infused latex foam, cooling gel foam, and a motion-isolating support layer to eliminate some of the most common issues that wake people up.

At the same time, sinking into the Recore mattress is great for your body. The balanced support helps you wake up feeling refreshed, with your muscles ready to go another round in whatever active or athletic activity you have planned. If you sleep hot, the latex foam and graphite infusion can help control heat build-up, creating a more comfortable sleeping experience overall.

Even the cover is in on it. Recore uses a SilverCharged top cover. This cool fabric uses antimicrobial threads to keep your mattress fresh and clean. To do this, the cover is threaded through with real silver. It’s still washable, so don’t be afraid to throw it in the washing machine!

The Recore mattress comes with a 15-year warranty that protects against major defects. Try it for a total of 120-nights during your risk-free sleep trial.

This mattress features a soft, breathable cover, followed by layers of gel foam, memory foam, and more to help create a comfortable surface that doesn’t retain heat.

This mattress shines when it comes to the coil layer. These coils are zoned and pocketed, meaning they are great at reducing motion transfer. They are zoned, meaning firmer coils are positioned under your hips and back for additional support. But that’s not the only place where the Brunswick Spring Mattress is supportive.

A perimeter of thick, supportive foam encases the coils, creating a comfortable edge for sitting or sleeping. This mattress feels the same no matter where you lay or sleep, making it great for those who need a little extra help.

The comfortable quilted cover is extremely breathable, especially because of the loose pillow-top fill underneath. It wicks away moisture and uses a few layers of supporting gel foam to maintain comfort for all sleepers. The Brunswick Spring Mattress is available for a 120-night trial and is backed by a 15-year warranty.

Why Trust Us?

We’ve spent years in the sleep industry, tracking trends and testing new mattresses to bring you the best of the best. Between our detail-driven test lab and our amazing team of testers, we’ve assembled only the best feedback to help you choose a mattress that’s best for you. Using information from all of our different tests and feedback sessions, we evaluated each mattress based on these four performance areas:

  • Motion Isolation. Don’t wake up to your partner’s every move! Motion isolation keeps you asleep, even if your partner moves around a lot. We tested how well each mattress isolated motion by measuring how much movement was felt on the other side of the bed.
  • Temperature Control. If you sleep hot, temperature control features are a must. We looked at how well each mattress regulated temperature, from cooling foams to perforated layers and everything in between.
  • Pressure Relief. Pressure relief helps you feel more comfortable, reduces pressure points, and increases comfort. We tested each mattress for how well it relieved the pressure, so you know that your mattress will be comfortable.
  • Edge Support. If you sit or sleep near the edge of the mattress, you know how important supportive edges can be. We looked at how well each mattress supported its edges.

Mattress Basics

Before you can choose the right mattress for you, consider these basic features and options for your next best night’s sleep.

Type of Mattress

There are a few different types of mattresses. Mattresses are usually defined by the contents of their layers. Here are some of the options on our list:

  • Memory Foam. Memory foam provides a comfortable, pressure-relieving surface that sinks to support your customized ‘body map’ It does this by reacting to the heat in your body. Memory foam can be supportive and soft, but it can also generate more heat than other types of mattresses.
  • Latex. Latex also forms in your body, though not in the same way that memory foam does. Mostly, Latex provides a responsive surface for combination sleepers and outstanding pressure relief for those who sleep on their sides.
  • All Foam. An all-foam mattress combines layers of memory and latex foam to create a sleeping surface. This combination does great in most of our performance areas, but each blend can feel slightly different. Pay close attention to how the materials are layered for each all-foam mattress.
  • Hybrid. A hybrid mattress uses a coil support layer sandwiched between layers of foam. These mattresses are supportive (and mostly provide great lumbar support), and they can be used with adjustable frames as well.

Firmness

Firmness is one of the most important features to consider when choosing a mattress. While you should choose the firmness that best appeals to you, how do you know where to start? While factors like body type and sleeping position can play into the firmness you prefer, you have to understand the basic options available to you.

Each mattress is usually rated on a firmness scale. Most mattress companies use some version of the firmness scale to rate their mattresses. Here’s our firmness scale.

  • 1 – 4: Soft
  • 5: Medium
  • 6-10: Firm

If a mattress falls between these values, they are considered a bit differently. A 4.5, for example, might be considered Medium Soft. A 6.5 might be a Medium Firm, too.

Body Type & Sleeping Position

Your body type and sleeping position can tell you a lot about the type of mattress you might prefer, even if you aren’t sure yourself. While these are only guidelines, those with a certain weight who sleep in a particular position often share preferences when it comes to firmness. Here are some of the suggestions you might use to choose your mattress.

FirmnessBody TypeSleeping Position
Soft< 130lbsStomach
Medium130lbs – 230lbsSide
Firm230lbs+Back, Combination

Sleep Trials & Warranties

When you purchase a mattress online, you can’t try it before you buy it. Still, trying a mattress in a retail location might only give you a few seconds to see how the mattress feels. That’s where sleep trials come in.

Most companies offer a sleep trial, which allows you to test your mattress for several days (or even months) after it arrives at your door. Since it takes about 30 days for your body to adjust to a new mattress, most sleep trials are at least 60 days long. Go with a longer trial if possible – this allows you to try the mattress for longer to ensure that you like it. If you don’t, you’ll get back the money you spent. Returns are free, too.

Warranties, on the other hand, protect you in case there are manufacturing defects with your mattress. While you should always read the warranty to find out how you are protected, a longer warranty is usually better.

Size

Mattresses come in six regular sizes, but there are additional options available from some companies. If you don’t already know how large a mattress you need, consider the following table.

SizeDimensionsSleepers
Twin38” x 75” (96.5cm x 188 cm)1
Twin XL38” x 80” (96.5cm x 203.5cm)1
Full54” x 75” (134.5cm x 190.5cm)1+
Queen60” x 80” (152cm x 203.5cm)2
King76” x 80” (193cm x 203.5cm)2+
California King72” x 84” (183cm x 213.5cm)2+

You should choose the size that best fits your needs and comfort levels. There may be additional sizes available, but these standard 6 sizes are available for most mattress options.

Mattress Performance Features

Now that you know all about the basics, it’s time to look at some of the performance features you need to keep an eye out for.

Temperature Control

If you sleep hot, you aren’t alone. Many Canadians wake up feeling uncomfortably warm during the night. If this is something you struggle with, you might have heard that memory foam mattresses tend to hold in heat. Mattresses with temperature control features work to reduce the build-up of heat throughout the night. Look for mattresses with gel cooling foam, perforated foam, and active cooling measures to help reduce how much you’ll sweat at night.

Motion Isolation

If you sleep with a partner, you understand how important motion isolation is. Some mattresses allow you to feel every movement your partner makes. Innerspring mattresses are notoriously bad at this, as motion can travel easily across the springs and wake you when your partner turns or gets out of bed.

A mattress with great motion isolation stops this process as it happens, ensuring that you stay asleep even when your partner turns over. Foam mattresses are great at motion isolation, and hybrid mattresses can isolate a lot of motion as well. Look for a foam mattress with open-cell foam for additional motion isolation.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is what makes foam mattresses comfortable. Most of the mattresses on our list will contour to your body, providing customized pressure relief based on where you need it most. If you sleep on your side, balanced pressure relief is important. A great pressure-relieving mattress will prevent pressure points from forming,

Foam mattresses provide great pressure relief, but some mattresses are better at it than others. Look at what each mattress claims about how they handle pressure relief to make an informed choice.

Edge Support

Some foam mattresses lack support around the edges. Sitting on the edge of the bed to put your slippers on can make you feel like you’re sliding off, and sleeping near the edge can be uncomfortable. If you regularly sleep or sit near the edge of the bed, edge support is an important performance feature to look for. Stronger edge support helps you feel more balanced and supported on the edge of your mattress, eliminating the feeling of sliding or falling off.

Mattress Feel

Each mattress feels just a little bit different, but we’re specifically talking about the feeling associated with these types of foam mattresses. Regardless of how firm a mattress is, some memory foam options tend to sink in and feel like you’re sleeping in quicksand. Latex options contour to your body in the same way as memory foam, but they allow you to move around easier. Consider what type of feel you’d prefer – a responsive latex that’s easy to move around on, or a sinking memory foam that cradles your pressure points. While firmness is a great metric to go by when you’re purchasing a mattress, you should consider how the blend of materials used to create the mattress might feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

The type of foundation your mattress needs depends on the type of mattress you purchase. Check your mattress’s manual or company website to see its compatible foundations.

Once your mattress arrives, move the box into the room where you have the foundation set up. Remove the mattress and carefully cut open the sealed plastic. After removing the plastic, wait 48 hours for the mattress to regain its shape before using it.

It takes about 30 days for your body to adjust to a new mattress. This is especially true if your old mattress is worn down or unsupportive. This is why most sleep trials are longer than 30 days.
